I'm going to Vegas in two weeks and am curious as to whether I can get a marker for $2,000. I don't want to carry $2,000 in cash with me and would rather just get it from them. Anyone know if they give a marker that low?

    Marker

They do markers that low for sure. But they have to go through credit report, check your checking acct etc etc.

Easier process is front money. Send a wire for 2000 and your money is in the cage and works the same as a marker yet they do not need to check your life history.

But to answer your question, yes they will happily give you a marker for 2000

Actually, the easier thing to do is to set up the line of credit before you go. It takes 2 inutes to fill out the form and fax it to the casino. Then just ask for the markers as you need them. I get them for $500 at a time.

Why not wire the money? Because from the time you wire it to the bank until the time you take the winnings back to your bank, it is not earning any interest . (I know, these days it is not much, but money is money.) With a marker, you get an interest free loan for two weeks - the typical time when a casino will send the marker to your bank for withdrawal.

I just filled out a credit app for aria and I believe $10k was the minimum CL. I've heard people getting as low as $5k. The credit app was a generic one for the Mgm properties

All the generic apps I filled out for MGM properties have $2500 as a minimum. That's what I have at Aria, Mandalay, NYNY and MGM. I usually bring cash, and like to have a bit extra available if I need it, and using the markers works for me.

    Credit Line

I think you are asking about a credit line....if you have an approved credit line with the casino, you are able to access the credit line by requesting a marker...depending on the casino, usually, the MINIMUM credit line you request is $2,500.....and normally, you would ask for a marker in $500 increments...a credit line is essentially a check cashing privelege with the casino....when you sign a marker, you are actually signing a check for the amount requested...if you do not "buy back" the marker during your stay, the casino will "cash" the marker/check with your bank...

I don't see any minimum amount on the marker limit application. Fill it out online and submit it online. It's fast and easy. What you are agreeing to is that when you ask for a marker you have that amount of funds available in your account. And yes it's nice to have one setup and two weeks is plenty of time to get it done.

I stand corrected. The suggested minimum is $10k per my email correspondence with the credit manager. The actual is $2,500 on the actual hard copy I filled out and faxed over.

Why in the world would anyone have a problem carrying $2,000 around?

And, even if you did, for way less effort, you can withdraw $1,000 from the ATM for $5 - give or take. Lot less effort.

I often carry around $4-5k. No big deal.

I always have $2500 on me when I start the day, even if I expect to draw markers against my up front money. That way if I want a short break away from my home casino, I'm free to instantly leave and gamble elsewhere.

Not trying to pile on but a $2000 marker seems sort of like a waste of time. $2000 in Bennies in your pocket does not take up a lot of room.

as JHPA mentioned, it might be best to apply for the marker before you go on your trip. That way you know that you have a line of credit and don't have to worry about applying when you get there. It will also affect the amount you bring up, if you know you have an established line of credit you don't have to worry about bringing up more money in case your LOC is denied.

As for the $2000 amount, each casino has their own minimum amounts and the increments you can take out when you ask for a marker. Best to read the fine print or contact casino credit to get their "official" scoops. Some of the "lower" ranked casinos offer lower LOC amounts, for instance the boyd casinos downtown offer $2000 LOC (I have one at each at the fremont and MSS). I even have a $1000 LOC at the Cal just in case.

The amount that people carry around is based on comfort level IMHO, some people don't bat an eye with $5k in their pockets, other people feel it burning a hole if they have $1k in their pockets so don't worry what anyone else thinks or their comments on your request, just carry around whatever you feel comfortable with.

I actually use my markers for most of my spending money when I'm in vegas, gambling, eating, clubbing (don't like to use cc, had problems with cc being abused once so won't do that again) and whatever incidentals I have on my trip. I also bring up a certain amount in TC's just in case so the TC's and my marker take care of my expenses and gambling. Luckily (knock on wood) I have never lost everything so at least I had some money when going home.

    Certegy

not sure whether this is actually the same thing as a line of credit, but I use an e-check service called Certegy to get money at both MGM and CET properties.

it was originally set up just by presenting a personal check and driver's license at the cage (at Aria, as I recall). my understanding is that the casinos then arrange with Certegy for the credit check and bank authorization that allows me to withdraw money in the future just by presenting a driver's license at the cage and signing a receipt. the amount withdrawn is debited to my checking account a few days later. unlike ATM withdrawals, no fees are attached to these transactions. and the individual withdrawal amounts are whatever you feel like taking out at the time (up to your personal max limit, of course).

not sure whether it can be arranged by the OP in advance, but it was very easy to set up in person.

I thank everyone for their input! I know some of you bet way more than this (and that's just per hand) but I'm fresh out of college so this is a sizeable amount for me. The reason I ask the question is because I just don't feel comfortable walking around with $2,000 but still want access to it. I'm gonna try to apply for the credit or possibly just take the hit on withdrawals from the ATM.

If that's your gambling budget for the trip, just bring it in cash, (write a check for cash at your bank, no service charges). You don't have to carry it all on you, you can leave the balance in the room safe in your room, (most hotels now how these and they're free.)

I'd guess that at least 50% of the tourists you see walking down the street in Vegas have at least a few thousand in their pocket. Keep the 'roll' in a money clip separate from your wallet in your front pocket. You should keep your wallet in your front pocket as well, but even after 24 trips to Vegas I've never felt at risk of being pick-pocketed, though I'm sure it happens.

Applying for credit seems like a hassle to me, especially for a small amount like this. I've always brought my bankroll to Vegas as cash. If you're in the $20,000+ bankroll category, then getting credit and using markers makes a lot more sense.

I think $2000 is a lot of money for most of us on here never mind just being out of College. If you don't feel comfy you do whatever you want. I personally don't feel comfy with less than $2000 in my pocket but I am a gambling Donkosaurus. Good luck.

is it possible to just take a cashiers check from my bank for $8k or so and then deposit it at the cage to draw off of daily? Or possibly a wire transfer, not sure how those work though.
    thank you for any input.

If you take a cashiers check with you, you would still be wise to send a copy of it to the cashiers cage several days ahead of time. They like to call the bank and verify it before they hand out cash or markers. If you arrive on a Saturday, Sunday or a weeknight, you may have to wait until your bank is open. Anything can be forged including a cashiers check. Depending on your bank and your personal relationship with them, wire transfers can be charged for by the total amount or by the cost per hundred. Some banks will not charge at all depending on your situation.

I think markers help at least get a host. I have a small 5k line at CET, went through it in four days on 50/hand BJ and craps about a year ago. Not my luckiest four days. A host gave me his card, but never heard from him and didn't expect to.

However, decided to take a trip next week. Emailed him and just asked if he would consider comping a day or two, and he took care of a PH room for three days, Saturday thru Monday (bcs title game).

If I had gone through that money with no CL, no one would give a damn, I just wasn't betting high enough.

What I usually do is bring all my cash with me, then as soon as I get there lock in the safe and just take a set amount with me each day. This has helped me for a number of reasons...If I blow through my bankroll for the day I have to step away from the table and physically go get the cash. Where if I have a credit line, in the heat of the moment while chasing losses I may just dig myself a bigger hole.

For 2k, get it all in hundreds, stick in sealed envelope and put it in an inside coat pocket with zipper or something like that.
