So, I caught a CRAZY good flight deal on cyber Monday, and I'm booked to go to Vegas April 7th - 12th. Stupid me didn't look that the broadcasters convention is in town that week, which means 90,000 people competing for hotel rooms.

Right now the strip is looking pricey that week. Will it come down or just continue up? I may just stay downtown if thats the case.

Anyone have any thoughts on this convention and what we think prices might do?

    Thanks for your help!

I don't think thats considered a large convention and there are conventions all the time. You may not even notice it except for when you are at a bar, and all the men with really cool voices walk up and order drinks, lol.

I would think it would be better to try and book earlier. As far as convention sizes go, this is one of the top 5 in vegas. That being said, when I was out there two years ago, there were plenty of rooms still available to book.

I have been to this convention every year since 2000. The attendance drops by about half after the first day, so suffer/avoid day one and all is fine after that. :peace:

NAB is considered one of the largest conventions. in good economic times 120,000+. These days maybe it will be 80-90k

    I would book now.

The rates don't look too bad to me right now... what rate are you looking to pay and what kind star level are you looking for?

But yea if you are scared, book something refundable, then keep checking. My family is going next month. They've cancelled and rebooked their hotel 3 times already to get the best deal.

Regardless of the convention, it's also spring break.. and good weather... that is not a cheap time in Vegas.

I don't have any requirements from the standpoint of star quality of the hotel. I prefer staying on a budget and the room just needs to be a place to lay my head. I was hoping to be able to try out somewhere new on the strip, but don't want to dump too much into the room cost. (especially when I can book MSS downtown for $38/night) On the strip, I've stayed at Bally's, Bellagiio, Flamingo, Bills, and IP. I do prefer mid strip but am not against staying elsewhere. I've also spent quite a few trips exclusively downtown.

This is a poker/craps centric trip. We plan on playing a lot of poker tournaments during our stay, and the ones at the Nugget downtown have good rules and good buy ins, so maybe a downtown stay makes sense.

All in all, I just don't like to dump too much into the room. This is my first trip to Vegas during the week (have always done weekends before), so I was hoping for better prices, but dummy me didn't look at the conventions.

I think I'll go ahead and book a refundable room somewhere downtown and keep my eye on prices. Any other ideas are much appreciated!

    Thanks!

I went down the last year for NAB. I stayed at the Palms for the first two nights and it was very reasonable. The convention does not have any shuttles from the palms, Rio or Gold Coast. So these hotels don't have the same room rate inflation.

I don't suggest this but you can book through the NAB website. Planet Hollywood is going for $75 a night, NYNY is $79. Just select Non-Member when it asks you the attendee type. One of my friends booked a hotel using the CES rates without any issue eventhough he was not an attendee.

Judging from last year, the rates will be high (and remain high) for Sunday and Monday, reduce quite a bit on Tuesday and be back to normal for Wednesday and Thursday night. So splitting your stay may be beneficial.

Update - Booked at IP....errr...The Quad

So I received the "5 nights for $150" e-mail I'm sure everyone has received for the Quad. Typically I wouldn't consider that much of a deal, but during the week I'm there, its definatly a good buy. So, I'm booked at The Quad. We stayed there in June of this year as well. Love the casino, the rooms are just that, a room. But its cheaper than any deal I've gotten to date, including any room downtown. Love the location and proximity to everything else.

For me, I'm hardly in the room, so anything outside of a park bench is ok with me.

I was in Vegas last year during this convention and worried about that as well, but really I hardly noticed anything at all. What you should worry more about is the fact that it is Final Four weekend and the national championship game. That brings in a lot of people Sat-Mon for betting. I will be there the weekend before for that exact reason!

NAB is big, but you should find good rates downtown still. I like staying downtown for conventions really too, the Express bus is convenient to LVCC.

    Final four!!!!!!

Holy cow, I totally appreciate that reminder. I love watching some college hoops, so this is perfect. The final game is always on Monday night, right?

I was there last year with my boyfriend, who worked the convention. We stayed the week at the Palazzo and it was crazy busy. During the day, the hotels are fairly quiet and I found the pool to be a great escape...but everything at night was packed. We even tried to go off the strip for dinner and found waits to be over an hour at local restaurants. I know that our hotel was more expensive than average too, but I am not sure about the numbers. It was definitely busier than average, but not intolerable.

Yes, final four will be sat afternoon and evening, and championship will be Mon night! I was at the Flamingo last year during final four and the championship game. Watched the game at a table in what was then a small cafe(cant remember the name) beside the elevators while having dinner. We sat there the whole time and pissed some people off I believe since all the tables were full and we werent going anywhere! We decided to go the weekend before this year, which I didnt realize till booking is Easter weekend, so I will be there for the Elite Eight, cant wait!
