Canters Deli in TI closes

Bummed that they closed. To be replaced by something called Little Richie's Chicago Style Beef and Dogs. Canters was much more reasonable than the outrageous prices and sandwich sizes of Carnegie in the Mirage.

 

Reasonable?

With $16.00 sandwiches?

I blew by that place when I saw the prices, and it looks like others did too.

I wanted to eat there, I really did, but I can't pay almost 20 beans for a sandwich after eating oxtail stew at the California Market St. Cafe counter.

 

I agree that many people think close to twenty bucks is too much to pay for a sandwich.

we tried it a couple of years ago and although it was good we can have a sandwich at earl of sandwich for less than half and their sandwiches are awesome.

 

Went in there a few years back wanting a sandwich. Found out that every sandwich was on rye bread. What?????

 

Only having rye bread at a deli is like only having one kind of meat.

 

Years ago we went to Fairfax/Mid-Wilshire to check out the auto museum. We of course had lunch at Canter's. One of the guys ordered his pastrami on sourdough with mayo. I wish I had the waitress' reaction on video.

I don't recall rye-only at Canter's TI.

 

Though I can't recall for sure whether or not Canter's was actually rye-only, it's a Jewish-style deli. That's just the cuisine. It's like how they only have french fries and not sweet potato fries or yucca fries at McDonald's.

 

Canter's at T.I. was rye only, hence my original post.

 

But what would one put tongue or pastrami or corned beef on if not rye?

 

Exactly!! We love rye bread.

 

And yet there are others that do not love rye. Perhaps their lack of selection of different bread types hastened their demise. But at least Ken would have somewhere to put his tongue.

 

Been to a lot of Jewish delis in my day and while orders of wheat or white were frowned upon or at least snickered at, they were available.

Doesn't seem too hard to offer bread options. Also doesn't seem too hard to expect a certain type of cuisine to be made in its unique fashion. Kinda like going in for foie gras but wanting it to be made with other than goose liver.

I miss Stage at Caesars Forum Shops.

We're all missing the big news: Chicago dogs on the strip! Italian beef sandwiches! Here's hoping they go for less than $20.

 

But you just started loving the Ox Tail stew... what about the other 42 trips?

 

McDonald's dollar menu offers a host of options.

 

I'm told it's being operated in house - no one from Chicago, just TI staff. However, they are using Vienna Beef products. So that's something. I'll give it a try, but I'm highly skeptical.

WHAT?????? This is terrible news. I love Canter's and have been eating there for years. To be replaced with a hotdog joint - geez - you can get a hotdog at the mall across the street. Where am I going to go for my pastrami and corned beef sandwiches? Canter's had the best. I will NOT be going back to TI. Last time I went to TI to eat at Canter's I really noticed how the casino has just downgraded - not what it used to be. Canter's was the only reason I went to TI and gambled there. Bye-Bye TI.

 

Just go to Carnegie Deli at The Mirage. It is also expensive but I think it's even a bit better.
