Last week staying at the Stratosphere , I kept getting a message when I would surf the web that my room was going to be charged for wi-fi. I would shut it off and go 4G whenever that happened. How do they know if it is in my room or in the hall? Or even me, my brother was using his as well. I don't believe I ever got charged, I didn't see anything on the bill anyway.

Hotels that offer this usually have you login using your last name and room number to gain access.

4G would kick off and a window popped up claiming my room was going to be charged to use the Wi-Fi. I would click back into 4G. I have a Samsung Galaxy S III and my brother has an iPhone 4 and we were both getting that message.

This happened at a holiday inn to me actually, as long as you don't click it, it should be fine.

I guess i'm wondering how they'd tie your room to the device without you physically doing it initially

Sounds like you were going to get hacked. If you didn't logged into the hotel server, they would not know what room you were in. Happens a lot on public WI-FI.
