I just spent a four-day weekend in Vegas and I like to play 2 hands of $25 blackjack simultaneously. I vary my bets from there, up to $100 each hand, but I like to start out at $25.

I tried this at the Wynn, and they refused, saying that if I wanted to play two hands, I had to double the table minimum, even on the rare occasions that a $15 table was open (which was not often - most often it was 25 or 50). No other casino I played at had this restriction (Palazzo, Venetian, Mirage, Aria).

I was staying at the Wynn, so I tried multiple times just in case I got a crabby dealer and pit. No use.

So the questions are: (1) what is the reason for this rule, and (2) why would a casino make a decision that would send players off site? If not for this rule, I doubt I would have left the Wynn property :)

Am I the only one who thinks this is nuts?

It may be nuts, but it's pretty common in vegas

I've never seen a casino NOT do this, unless playing in the high limit room.

The only place I know to not have this rule are some of the station casinos everywhere on the strip it's double the min.

Think this is pretty much standard unless you go to a 100min table or higher

OK, so it is standard. Anybody has an idea what's the reason for this?

Wynn are sticklers on this rule, where other casinos are more relaxed. I have played 2 hands at many casinos, always $50 each hand or higher and never had an issue.

On at least 2 occasions when I played 2 hands at $50 at a $50 table at Wynn I had a confrontation. Once I was told that I just could not do it and would have to find a $25 table so I just moved, the other occasion I was told I could continue but would have to stop if it got busy (this was around 10am on Sunday morning with hardly anyone playing).

I agree that the 'rule' is there but it is usually disregarded at $50 and higher (and maybe at lower stakes). Wynn seem to enforce it at anything under $100.

As to why, I assume it is so the casinos can accommodate all the players trying to find a seat.:rolleyes2:

When playing on a pitch game, they always say, "make one good before you look at the other." Could it have something to do with card exposure and counting? The higher minimum would reduce the table spread.

The Coast properties (Orleans, Gold Coast, and Suncoast) all permit playing two hands at the table minimum!

Just to reiterate, I played ~30 hours at Palazzo, Venetian, Mirage and Aria and never had this rule mentioned once. In fact, when I first heard the rule and left the Wynn, I sat at a table at the Venetian and specifically asked whether it was permitted. The dealer said 'no problem'.

At one point in the Palazzo, at one table we had three players each playing two hands sometimes at the $25 minimum.

Maybe it is standard and only the Wynn cares.

This is very standard and as someone else mentioned, seems to be enforced much more often at the $25 and under levels. As to why you didn't see this any place else, perhaps the tables weren't that busy, really hard to say.

The reason for the rule is simply about keeping the tables full. You don't see many people betting two hands the entire time. Most people tend to bounce between one and two hands along with adjusting their bet amounts. This could take a spot away from someone who is willing to bet every round and so in the casino's mind they make you pay for it by betting at least double the minimum.

I think the reason Wynn is more strict here is grounded in their training programs. Do it right, do it the same way and avoid the ambiguity. They are probably costing themselves a few bucks during the slow times though.

Mostly what it comes down to is you are taking up a spot someone else could potentially play, so if the casino is going to let you, they want to make sure you're worth more to them then the average player who may sit down.

This also means that the rule can be more flexible at higher limits and tables that tend to have more open spots.

But I think its also a bit about feeling like they can coax the types of players who like betting multiple spots into bumping anyway.

Yeah, standard for decades in most gambling destinations; Vegas, AC, Biloxi, even cruise ships.

The casinos I frequent in the UK not only enforce this rule, but also state that if you are playing alone you MUST play two hands. It's as if the Rulemakers think they have some sort of entitlement to my business.

Yes, I used to be a regular at my local Gala casino. Last time I played I was told I had to play 2 hands as I was playing alone! That was 5 years ago and I have never been back. I decided that if they were just going to make up rules like that, it was not a place I wanted to play.

That's weird. Like you have any say in whether anyone else sits down at the table.

Possible, but I'd be more likely to believe it's to prevent any sort of sleight of hand.

On that "You must play two hands if you are the only player" rule, do they let you just sit there until another player shows up? Does the pit supervisor direct single players to tables that are open? What do they do on a slow night when people leave and your the only one left? Are you grandfathered in? Can a small group of people request a certain minimum on a table, if their tables don't exist or are full? (What a pain in the a$$.)

I never play two hands because I lose twice as fast..... but I have played the pass line and the don't pass line at the same time.
When I asked the craps dealer girl, are those both my bets? She said ..."Yup". So I said I'd better go get a couple of gallons of coffer or a few Red Bulls.
