Rutgers and U of MD are going to the big 10!!Great financial move for RU and hopefully more of our NJ talent will stay home to play college ball.
Any Big 10 fans out there more than welcome to weigh in ,even if its a negative reaction. Cant wait to renew our rivalry with PSU,esp.since were a lot better team than the last time we played them.

The Terps don't move the needle but good on ya' for the Scarlet Knights; great move. And with the Mountain West looking like it's staying together, the ACC and Big East better figure out pronto how to join forces, maybe talk a deal with some of the MAC and C-USA. I'm not a proponent of the mega-conferences but the day is at hand.

    Can we give back Colorado?

Personally, being an oldtimer I'm not for all this expansion.Nothing against Rutgers and Maryland, but why do we need these bigger conferences?I understand the financial end of this, but for gods sake,it's college football! It's supposed to be fun.Not a cash cow.

I agree with Ken, whether you want them or not they are here. Being from Arkansas and a Razorback fan, when we changed from SWC to SEC was the best decision we could have made. Because of the money we have gotten over the years we have some of the best facilities in the country.

But it is all about the money.....

As a Michigan guy I find it a shame that they don't all get to play each other anymore. The rivalries will thin out over time with such big conferences.

Husker fan here and don't like the additions. It will be interesting to see what happens to the divisions and how often teams out of the division will play. 9 game conf. schedule will make for better games if that is the route they go.

Maryland did it for 1 reason... $$$$

They are loosing programs left and right and their AD budget is JACKED

I am a WVU alum and huge diehard fan... I am happy for Rutgers I really am... Maryland they will be subpar

I'm and Illinois Alum and I love the idea

The reality is that it was all about money.

Maryland athletics have been a drain and by signing on with the Big Ten they are getting access to the Big Ten Network money, which I believe last year resulted in all member teams getting checks for over $30, plus the Big Ten is a full revenue share, which means they pool all of the football bowl money and distribute it evenly among all member teams. Sure there will be an ACC Network eventually, but with startup costs, and the fact it takes a while to get a network on cable providers they wouldn't see any real money for years. I believe that when the PAC-12 network started it had minimal penetration and The Longhorn Network was running programming for at least 2 days before it actually was available.

Don't forget the benefit to the Big Ten, Maryland qualifies the Big Ten Network as a Regional Sports Network, which I believe results in the network being a part of any tier that includes MASN and the charges per subscriber going from about .25 per month to .75

Rutgers works well from the money aspect because it makes the Big Ten Network a regional sports network for the NY/NJ market.

Finally the reality is that with the BCS coming to an end with the apparent replacement being a four team playoff, the Big Ten has apparently decided to launch the nuclear option. They are trying to be the first of the four 16 team superconferences who will likely control all four playoff spots. Followed likely by the PAC-12, the SEC and whoever can grab the last spot, but most likely the Big 12. That somewhat improves things because the conference championship games then operate almost as a round of 8 for the bracket. Basically, I think it was Jim Delaney giving Notre Dame the finger for joining the ACC, since it seems like the ACC will be shut out from the football playoffs, meaning if Notre Dame can somehow win the national championship, it is likely their last ever.

    Let the games begin!

I can see where a lot of old time Big 10 fans could be upset with all this expansion,it has nothing to do with sports, rather tv contracts, bowl and playoff ratings. To me the biggest joke was when Boise State joined the Big East so they could possibly win the conference and get an automatic BCS bid.
Its paying off already for RU ,yesterday a local kid,one of the best lineman around from about 5 miles from RU commited despite offers from a lot of top schools.
The one thing I will say that RU brings to the table is that its been near the top nationally of having football players graduate each year.

The Big 12 is lurking now right behind ACC. Rumors are flying down here about FSU and Clemson now. The move by WVU was one we all wondered about but other than they have had a bad year on the field it has been positive for them. I personally did not want the Big 12 back at 12 but the powers that be seem to want a championship game and may be pushing for 12 again.

Another 'Husker fan here, and I don't like the mega conferences either, but as one earlier poster said, they are here so we'll have to deal with it. I hope the Big XII gets enough teams soon to have a conference championship game. I also hope Notre Dame is forced to join a conference or be shut out of any playoff consideration. It is completely unfair for some teams to not have to play in a conference championship game and still get in the final four in a couple of years. He'll, I like ND, but the same standard should be applied to everyone.

That was my beef here when we went to 12 and a championship. All Pac schools played each other annually, and in my opinion nothing determines a true conference champ better than playing 9 of 9. But it is what it is, we have divisions, and a confy. Not better. Different.

And the money IS all-important. Lotta educators bitch about the supposed $$$ drain or at least the $$$ "misappropriation." Big time NCAAFB fuels a LOT of other sports, along with men's BB. Not true everywhere but more and more becoming the standard. These TV deals and corporate tie-ins and massive gifts from the likes of a Phil Knight or T Boone is in some sense the new Title IX.

(And in our case, before taking a shot a Phil's athletic largesse, cruise campus and see all the brick/mortar educational asset he's built, the money he's given to OSU and other schools.)

I lot of conferences wanted ND

But,the way I understand it ,they had such a super tv package with NBC that they were not about to give that up .They half joined the Big East, everything except football ,now they have some type of membership in the ACC ,which if I understood right ,retains a lot of their big money traditional tv games and gives them a chance to win the ACC and a BCS bowl.
Ken,glad to hear from you, heading down to SC saturday to play some golf and do some fishing. A guy trip to my buddys place near Beaufort.

Have fun down south! We're teeing it up on Friday at La Purisima. Family Grudge Match, Vol 2.

Notre Dame's long-standing sweetheart deal with NBC did (and does) allow it to go its own way and Notre Dame remains the only truly "national brand." (Look at the "success" of Longhorn Network for a lesson in this.) That will change (I hope, anticipate). Move to the Big Howevermany, Domers. You aren't that special.

The Notre Dame TV deal gets a lot of pub, but what many people fail to realize is that lowly Indiana makes more money from the Big Ten network than does Notre Dame from NBC.

As far as conference shuffling goes, to quote from the movie Network - "It's madness, I tell you!"

USA Today reported the average division 1 head coaching salary is $1.64 million and pay has increased 70% in 6 years. Brady Hoke from Michigan was interviewed on a tv a show and said only a few football programs are profitable. Ratings for college football are at an all time high and teams with .500 records are getting post season bowl bids. Looks like another arms race, the tail's wagging the dog.

Yep, it is amazing with all the money flying around that very few programs actually make money. Hard to reconcile that.......
