Table Games Craps bet maximums...

My brother-in-law was telling me about his friend who had a great craps run recently. He was hitting hard 8 and hard 6's on a consistent basis and was pressing aggressively every other hit.

It got to where his friend wanted to bet $1000 on hard 6 and the pit boss told him he cannot. This was below the maximum bet allowed for that table. When asked why not the pit boss only shook his head and repeated he cannot. The dealer kept pushing the chips back and saying "no bet".

Can the casino do this? Is it because of this person's unusual run of good luck? I don't understand why they wouldn't take the bet considering the odds of winning this bet.

I find it hard to believe the casino would sweat this amt. considering how much money they bring in during a days play.

Anyone had or heard of a similar experience? I wish I knew which casino this was at but I didn't ask.

 

The maximum bet on prop bets is not the same as the table limits. Atleast this is what I have been told by a dealer!

 

$1000 on a 5/9 nets a $1400 loss, but a hard 8 would cost them $10,000. A 2/12, $30,000. These are titanic differences.

Casinos can only win what is in your pocket, but they can lose to infinity. Therefore, the number 1 mantra of every shift manager is to LIMIT infinity. Craps tables can really be hit hard, so they have "Maximum wins" in place to make sure 12 straight hi-lo's dont bring the house down. In this case, his win of $10,000 must have violated the max payout, and the box-person will be pushing carts at Wal-Mart if he allows that bet.

For example:

- Prairie Meadows casino in Iowa has a max prop payout of $3000. Which puts the max hard 8 bet at about $325. And a 2/12 at $100.
- But then the Horseshoe in Council Bluffs has a max prop payout of $30,000. So you can bet a $3,000 hard 8 easily.

So basically, it all depends on where you are playing. If your friend is gonna fire like that, he should find a place that warrants his play.

 

Based on the higher odds of the hardways, one would think outside of the very small houses, they would welcome the bet.

 

Its self defense. If they allow the bet, there is a 1 in 10 chance that they lose $9,000. If they dont allow the bet, there is ZERO chance they lose $9,000....and the player slowly grinds the $1,000 back into their bank.

ONLY way you can hurt a casino, is one big shot at the right time that pays off. Casinos do everything they can to avoid that big shot. ESPECIALLY, if you are an unknown player that might never come back.

 

I would think it also depends upon the casino he's playing at. I was at the Encore a year or two ago and saw this one gambler with $1,100 on a hard 8 and the sumbitch hit. Holy smokes!! Back in the day at Caesars Palace they would've laughed at a $1,000 hardway bet.

To answer the question 'can the casino do that', it's simple. They can refuse any bet they want. But turning down a hard way bet is just silly on their part.

 

Yeah, I was always thinking the same thing, but then I got in the business and had it explained to me over and over again. Makes sense now.

But once again, it all depends on the casino you are at and their deep pockets.

I loved the 100x odds era at Binion's. one in a while just for kicks I would make a $1 pass line bet and back it up with$100 odds. Ah, those were great times....

I think this is a big part of why they won't take the bet. If the dice are so hot that a player will put up a hard way grand, the player isn't leaving the table anyway. He'll put $500 on the hard way, another $100 on a different hard way, and stack up his odds. Twice. Then the house wins. Again.

 

Most craps tables have a maximum payout posted. If the bet would result in a payout over that limit then it is not allowed. A good dealer would have explained this.

 

Another reason they have maximums (on regular bets) is so you can't Martingale your way out of a losing streak.
