But they'll keep building restaurants, bars and nightspots out into the walkways (Fremont Street outdoor bars and Diablo's at Monte Carlo), at formerly grassy areas (Rhumbar at Mirage, Encore Beach Club over the former Encore porte cochere, and Carlos & Charlies in Flamingo's once-lovely courtyard), above filled-in water spots (BLT Burger over the tiger pool at Mirage and Gilley's at T.I.) and hanging off the edges of buildings, until every square inch of Vegas is covered with them and you barely have room enough to walk from destination A to destination B.

That is so true Sam!! In the last few years actually walking into a resort, thru the Casino and into a club seems to be falling out of favor. I sometimes worry that the uniqueness, the flavor of Las Vegas will fade out.

It seems that everything new that opens, opens in threes, by the time someone begins a concept, two other properties are working on a near identical theme and they all open within six months of each other. In the meanwhile older unique spots are closing left and right in the last year or so.

Cough-cough can you say Bagatelle Beach Club/Restaurant/Nightclub/dry cleaners? It's been so long in coming that the concept, which never made sense to begin with, is so muddy that nobody cared when it finally opened last week.

Exactly! Thats another reason I hate the change, the Cathouse spot is a prime location, now it will be closed for who knows how long for a re-theming and the crowd that used to frequent Cathouse, which was a very fun crowd, will move on to other venues and the new place will be just that, another NEW place.

As I have said before, the greatest threat to LV is LV. I worry that in trying to maximize profits and give us what they think we want/need they really become a lot like every other city in the U.S. Most people can already drive to a Casino, I go to LV for the unique entertainment and atmosphere. If that goes away, I will too.

BB King's has been on the chopping block for a loooooong time, they declared bankruptcy months ago if I recall correctly.

I have to say, as much as I hate Hyde, I have to give it credit for not really disrupting the flow of Bellagio. I'm really not a fan of places like Diablo's which spill out onto the Strip.

Well that bites. Our 30's and 40's group had Cathouse on the to do list for our next trip. Good thing I like making plans for LV trips. Off to do more research!

Sam, you hit upon something I also noticed last month. Flamingo is a perfect example of a property that has built (at least I assume) to the very edge of pedestrian right of way with Margaritaville. In an effort to soak customers for more cash, Flamingo sucked the fun out of the place. The Linq insanity has made it worse and Caesars is really no better. I am of the opinion Las Vegas as a governing body should increase the width of required walkway code to accommodate. Another annoyance, requiring people walk through the stupid area that is packed around Cougar, I mean, Carnival Court.

I might be wrong (won't be the first time) but I think I read unlike most cities in the US, the casinos actually own the property right up to Las Vegas Blvd. There is no public sidewalk per say and they can do whatever they want.

Well, until we all learn to levitate or start using jet packs on our backs, the ground is still a necessary evil.

I have seen the mapping posted before, some Casinos actually own right up to the road, some do not.

Cathouse is a gorgeous venue! That's what I loved about it. It was definitely on my to-do list again, and thank God I didn't book Luxor last week when I was going to. Since Luxor lost a theme and their rooms became so blah, the only thing I like is the casino and Cathouse...such a precious place, truly redeeming for Luxor. Sad. Really.

Correct, thus the reason for porn slappers being able to stand in the areas not controlled by private ownership.

This is both true and untrue. While a lot of casinos do own the property all the way up to the sidewalk, the short version is that when what would otherwise be "public" property is privately-owned, First Amendment protections can still apply. Basically, when you open up privately-owned property to fully public use, like a sidewalk in Las Vegas, then a lot of the characteristics of public property (like the First Amendment) can wind up being applied, although it varies depending on the particular circumstances.

This is very sad news. I loved the Cathouse and I always recommend it to friends going to Vegas. It made a nice change from the bland mega-clubs.

    Cathouse closed, but...

ok, so i hear a lot of inside information, and it's rumored that the reason they "were" closed is because the management companies that are responsible for the space failed to pay the Luxor it's rent. Which means that they were ,most likely at least 3 months behind on it since on average casinos will "extend" credit for long term leases but not past 90 days unless full back due is paid. I have been in talks with some people that say that there will be more information as to if the closing will be permanent, or if there will be a reprieve. And if worse comes to worse, then Cathouse will most liekly be bought up by some other company ( Light Group, AMG, The One Group, etc...) and revamped into some new venue that will be the toast of the town for a couple months before fading into the regular Vegas nightlife landscape.

That seems to be happening a lot lately, lots of clubs/restaurants cannot pay their rent. I hope they work things out, I hate to see another mega club move in and end up just like all of the rest.
