The dining room @ Ellis was closed by the health inspectors. There were a total of 60 demerits and some of them are scary such an imminent danger due to a sewage problem. To checkout the inspection report - find Ellis Island on 10/29 (2nd page) - click on the name and then violations for the gory details:

Its there if you search by casino name or grade of "closed by ...". Also if you re-sort by date.

If an establishment is closed by the health department, how long before they can re open?? Assuming of course that they address the problems they had.

It seems that they can get reinspected pretty quickly.

Many of the violations are curable immediately so management can ask for a reinspection the same day. A sewage problem may take a little longer to cure.

I've never been there but always pictured it as a "dirty" place.

It is nowhere near as dirty as some places on the strip.

Excalibur for one, Imperial Palace and Casino Royale too. Just my opinion though.

Also S Scarpetta and Aquanox on the strip were listed as closed in the same report.

Sort the big list by grade and you can see a number of what should be decent places that have been closed.

i am shocked to see mermaids got an a. That place is horrifying even by drunken fremont street standards.

    I know...yuck!

Plus, Mermaids was the only place that wouldn't bring us free drinks unless we each put $5.00 in a machine.

The people on Trip Advisor think EI is filthy.

what TA thinks really doesn;t matter.

The list in the link is what to go by and it can affect any place. Even one of the cosmo kitchens got closed.

Enough demerrits and you have to close it. resolve the issues, get reinspected and you get to reopen.

I have had some fantastic meals from some very rough looking places and been fine - soem have made me ill. Same goes for very good places.

It only takes one thing wrong with your meal to make you ill and any kitchen can make mistakes.

The ones that concern me the most are the quiet places - it normally means food hanging around and thats when things can get rough...

I've eaten at roadside stands in Egypt and been fine - I've gotten sick at a five star place in London. It happens.

As noted above - the sewage issue is a concern. I wonder if there is a way to get the list sorted by type of problem...

anyway - they apparently have reopened so that means they have address all the concerns noted. I still prefer the BBQ there though..

I've never had a problem with a meal from Ellis Island but I get scared every time I see a picture of the Circus Circus Buffet.

Didn't know about problems, but we ate in the new BBQ area on Halloween and found the chicken and ribs combo and service as good as ever. New area very nice. Of course, hitting first ever royal at bar before dinner didn't hurt either! Plan on returning next month. Three and a half more days left of current trip.

Some people on TA think it's filthy. There are a fair number of snobs and a few wierdos that think trash it because for the low cost of the steak they didn't get something that would be served at Prime. But a great number of people there heartily recommend it. My initial inclination would be to pass on it for a while but my upcoming trip is my first chance to try the egg nog so it will stay on my list. It does baffle me that people have zero in on this closure when Aquaknox and Scarpetta were on the same list and even Andre's was closed earlier this year.

We ate in the cafe today. The food was good, service was slower than normal. There did seem to be less wait staff in our section, and we wondered if there had been a cull of less than satisfactory staff due to the bad health report. We visit there often on our trips, and there were only two familiar faces, that's what made me wonder about firings.

Not sure why people even read TA, these forums are so much more informative and imo give a truer perspective.

I am guessing there are many snobby types who wouldnt set foot in EI, they dont know what they are missing
