Not much of a club goer, but I've been thinking of hitting a club on my next visit. I am wondering what the etiquette is for having a host walk me into a club. I have never done this before. Do I stop by the host office, show them my players card (if my host isn't there of course), and ask them to walk me into the club? Is there anyone I need to tip along the way? The host can't accept cash. The people letting me through at the clubs? I'm pretty clueless here. Any experienced club goers here?

i would think it could be just as easy to call or speak with your host and have them get you on "the list" then you to the door person...."I'm on the vip list then tip them accordingly. this is just a suggestion...i don't know how all that work!

I just went in and asked them to walk me in to the club. Funny thing is that normally gets you free entry . But the hosts are not aware that you are given free entry for that.

Never thought of that, although being on the VIP list does still require you to lineup, but it won't hassle a host.

Weird. I would assume the people working at the clubs won't be charging so even if the host walking you doesn't know it's free it should still be free entry no?

    Confused

    Club Host or Casino Host?

If you are doing the Club Host, then you paid for a table and of course they walk you in or you walk yourself in with your wristband. I have NEVER tipped any club host.

Casino Host, then they are comping you. Do you have a comp account? If your casino host has no idea how to comp a club get a new casino host.

In the past, I could get a short line pass from my casino host that allowed me quick access to the clubs. But I did not have a table, I did not have to wait in line.

Sometimes, I would need one or two tables and that I would arrange with the CLUB HOST to find out how much it would cost me, then I would call my casino host and tell them the amount to take out of my comp account.

The day of the club visit I then coordinated with the casino host and the club host to make sure everything was copasetic. I have never paid for a table(s) at a club out of my wallet, it has always come out of my comp account.

Sometimes, if you are a resort guest you can get into a club on that property for free.

The only people I tip are the bartenders and the wait staff.

I am in Vegas right now. Last night walked in to find a host. Mine doesn't work at nights but my host told me to speak to the host on duty when I was looking to get in. Took awhile for the host to be free but he walked in myself and my 2 buddies, line bypass and comped entry. Actually felt like a vip. Lol. It was packed last night as it was Halloween but it was worth Iraq. I would think tho it is a hassle to the hosts to walk guests in as it still takes time out of his day for basically no reward to the host himself.

Being on the list is not really that helpful, you still have to wait, pay, tip, etc.

The host can "walk you in" and it costs him and you nothing and you DO NOT WAIT AT ALL. That is priceless if you just want to get in for a few minutes and not bother with a table.

    Always tip!

If someone in Vegas helps you into a club, or gets you a bottle you should always tip something commensurative with the service, and a club host is no exception. Remember Vegas is a service city, and the better care you take of your people, the better care they will take of you. You just got walked past a 100+ person general admission line and didn't have to wait or pay a cover, you should at least be tossing a $20 ( thats for the low end spots) if you get past the line at someplace like XS they you should be throwing a $50 ( after all general admission is $40 on average)
That's just a heads up for those who take advantage of a service without giving a second thought to the guy walking away calling you an asshole under his breath since he just did you a favor to cater to your needs, who may smile the next time you cross paths, but will be less likely to help you as much as he really could.

Good post... I agree... though many members of this board wear their non-tipping habits like a badge of honor.

If you're non tipping, which is fine for those who are that way, you're probably also not going to clubs. Because you find just as many people who will tell you what a waste of money that is.

    Thats sadly true.

I don't understand why someone would ever be proud of that? It's like the argument about tipping the waitress at the T.G.I.Fridays who only took your order, and had one food runners bring it out to you. If you're getting special treatment (walked past the door of a club, getting a free desert, getting any kind of cool comp that is the decision of the person serving you) then you should tip, it's just polite. Those people didn't have to take care of you, they could have acted like minimum wage drones and handed you off to some higher authority.
Personally i have been in the service industry for years, and have been a waiter, bartender, bar manager and VIP host and in all honesty, i keep track of the people that have been good to me, and the ones that weren't.
As an example i had a guy win a $10,000 jackpot on graveyard once when i was bartending, and it took a while for the EDT guy to get there to pay out the money ( after all most bar safes on graveyard don't have $10k to payout) while waiting for the payout this guy chilled and had a couple drinks, (all of which i comped him) ordered some food ( which i comped him) and when EDT finally came to pay him out he took his money, stood up (and i know what you're thinking happened, but no, he tipped me) and laid a $20 bill and left (well there's more to that story, but I'll save it for another day) you think that guy ever got served by me ever again? hell no, i remembered his face and every-time he came back he had a reeeeaaaly long wait to get a drink weather there was 100 people in the bar, or no one.
Now i think that on any winning bet it's customary etiquette to tip out (from what i was told) aprox 10% of your score. And i have seen this happn a number of times, someone hits for $200, and their tossing a $20 at the bartender, someone hits for $1000 and they throw $100. I understand that some people may be more engrossed in having their money, but they are not going to be welcomed back with open arms to anyplace that they would treat like that. And before you go into the logistics of how the bar I worked at should have been comping the guys who won the $10, our comp systems are based on money played, not won. that guy put is a $20 and somehow hit a jackpot, didn't gamble anything more and drink & ate for at least an hour while waiting for his payout.

While I am past the age of clubbing, I think I'd be inclined to tip around half of what it would have cost me to get in originally. So, a few people at $20 or $30 a head, and what you'd have to tip the doorman to jump the queue might work out to $50 or $100.

I'm a little surprised by this, though-

I had thought I was a good tipper, but if that is the norm, I guess I'm cheap after all. Off the top of my head, I might tip out $200 or $300 on a 10K hit, depending on the number of personnel involved in paying me/ serving me. Guess next time I'll just have to slink away afterwards.

So you think you were entitled to a thousand dollar tip because you happened to be tending bar when a guy hit a ten thousand dollar jackpot?

    You gotta be kidding me.

I consider myself a generous tipper. I think 10% is way excessive for a gambling hit, especially I assume you are talking a slot hit. I think $200 to $250 on a slot hit is just fine.

I agree totally on VIP's advice for the club host and that is right along what I usually tip my VIP host. He typically acts kind of surprised that I am giving him anything??? So I didnt know if that was expected or not??

10% on a slot hit is ridiculous.

would you be opposed to tipping out $20 against a $100 win? most people would probably agree that that's a decent tipout. At that rate you just tipped out 20% of your win to the bartender, if you hit for $2500 would you throw $100? if it's merely a matter as to how much you feel the service staff is deserved of based upon your winning, then it's really a law of percentages. If i hit for $10k i can damn sure guarantee that I'm not leaving the service staff a $20 tip, whoever's working will be looking at at least $250 (2.5%) and that's pretty generous.
maybe my generous tipping methods at the bars i frequent are part of the reason that i'm never paying for drinks even when i'm not gambling. Bartenders have the discretion to "move" comps around for people they like. If i'm sitting in a regular bar having a drink and not gaming, and some guy on the other side of the bar who i don't know is playing $100 hands of blackjack, the bartender is shifting some of his comps in my direction because of how often i take tip him when i am gambling.

    no, no no...

MTB: no need to slink away, if you're tossing a couple hundred to the staff trust me you're liked and appreciated. The example i used was an extreme one and i was shocked. if the guy in my story had thrown me $250 i would have been happy and considered him a generous tipper, and every time he came back in the bar i would have been on my toes making sure he was taken care of.
But, you've got to agree that a $20 tip on a $10k win is almost a complete insult to the person serving you. Besides, i'm pretty sure that when you win big like that you have to report it on your taxes, and if you dust a little off the top it only helps your cause when making your claim to loss ratio.

Whenever a thread turns to tipping, it almost always goes south... I'm a decent tipper, but gotta admit a bit stingy when I hit things, cause I rarely do and people around me act like I walked right up and won a grand! They didn't notice the $300-$400 I put in before that or the couple days worth of losses that exceed that amount. I do agree that Las Vegas is all about service and tips and I happily do my part, within reason.

    That's just super.

But it still doesn't justify you believing you're entitled to a $1000 tip because you happen to be serving drinks when someone hit a $10,000 jackpot.
