in fact just not in vegas , but very little else where, but always on line.
looking to stay at the Venetian next year , and would really like to try my hand at a poker table.
not to win loads , but just to cross another thing on my to do list !!
what amount do the table start at ?
do i need loads of $$$ to sit at a table , or are there tables where you can play with a minimum .
if not at the Venetian, where is best ?
    thanks inadvance

online, do you play limit or NL? do you play online for real money or just fun? in general in NL you want to have at least 50-100x the big blind. so if it's a 1/2 game, you'd want to buy in for at least 100-200. the table minimum is usually 25x the big blind, but that's very shortstacked to play right.

I agree with the above poster, but if you're a 2-4 limit player - I've seen people buy-in for $ 60 and up. The front desk folks at the poker room are usually friendly and can help you get into a game for most any buy-in.

By the way, I think that the Venetian is a pretty tough room. I would recommend trying Harrahs/Flamingo for a first live experience in Vegas. Good luck.

If some of it is nerves and just not feeling entirely comfortable with playing live a few of the poker rooms on The Strip offer free lessons, usually week days in the morning.

That won't really cover how to play poker, but more how to play poker in a casino: what you can and can't do, how to buy in, how to cash out, what to do if you have a problem or need more chips, etc.

Those usually run 30-60 minutes depending on the casino and then they make the game live, usually at limits lower than the casino normally offers, where you can either stay and play with the other players who went through the lesson with you or you can get up and leave.

You picked a great hotel if you're going to be playing a lot of poker. Venetian has a great room with games going on for the most part of the day and night unlike most properties on the strip.

It will depend on your bankroll and what game you are comfortable playing in. For no limit games, 100 X the big blind will be a comfortable amount without feeling short stacked. You can buy in for 100 dollars at a 4/8 limit and be comfortable.

If you're looking for a lower limit game like 2/4, try flamingo or mirage.

BTW, Venetian just remodeled their poker room and looks very nice.

They probably have a half-kill, then you might be doing a couple buy-ins. Play tight, get drunk, and have fun!!

Congratulations on getting married in Vegas

half-kill: if a person wins two hands in a row the game will turn into a 6-12 game instead of 4-8. as long as the same person keeps winning, it will stay that way. when he doesn't win consecutive games, it will return to 4-8.

I prefer newcastles when i play poker. they have good cocktail service, you'll never be on your last sip of beer there

The standard of live poker in Vegas will be comparable to the micro limits online, so basically between 5nl (0.02/0.05c) and 25nl (0.10c/0.25c) will be fairly similar to 200nl ($1/$2) live in Vegas.

That being said, action in the big 4 (Wynn/Bellagio/Venetian/Aria) is normally tougher than action in some of the smaller rooms. That's not to say that this is set in stone, but it tends to be that the regulars and locals play more at these rooms because of the better set up/comps that they receive.

From what I've experienced and read about, MGM is a particularly soft game, especially at the weekends. To be honest, at 1/2 nl, most games in Vegas are beatable, and if you're just looking to splash around and soak up the atmosphere, then you really can't go wrong with any of aforementioned places. If you're really looking to make money, then MGM and playing at the big 4 rooms at the weekend.

For your first time, play in a limit game, even if you're a NL player. Just sit for an hour and get the feel for the mechanics of it. There's very little trouble you can get into at a $3-$6 limit table.

My two cents is try the poker room at Monte Carlo. Nice dealers, well ran and good place to 'learn the ropes'.

That's not a bad idea. The last time I was there, it took them 10 minutes to get me a seat, and they appeared to feel bad about it...which seemed bizarre. Lots of locals, though.
