Interested to see what others do. I'm assuming most people don't have any hesitation with betting on their favorite team. However I'm always pretty gun-shy when it comes to betting on the teams I love. My reasoning:

    - If they lose and I lose my bet, it's a double whammy.
    - If they win but don't cover, the win leaves a bittersweet taste in my mouth.
    - If they are the underdog and cover but don't win, I take no joy in winning money when my team got beat. I guess betting the money line would eliminate the last two problems, but often times the potential payout just doesn't appeal to me.
-I guess the positive would be that if they win AND cover, it's doubly great

I have been pretty lucky. I avoid betting on Ohio State like the plague but the last few times I've been in Vegas they were playing a big game and my drunk alter ego has put a fair chunk of money on them. Luckily they covered both times! Anyone else experience the same nerves when it comes to betting on "your" team?

Typically no but I'm going to Vegas Wednesday so I bet $200 on my favorite baseball team (Cardinals) Friday against the Nats. They came back from down 6-0 and won.

I put all of my winnings on my Alma mater (Oklahoma) against Texas yesterday. Needless to say, they covered the -3.

No I have about 800 more bucks to gamble with!

Typically betting on my favorite teams isn't something I do. There is too much biased involved. With that said, Texas sucks so it was easy money.

If I'm betting a game that involves a team I root for, I typically bet the over/under on that game rather than the spread or money line.

I don't actually bet on games too often but I do tell my buddy what I think of Nebraska games and am usually right (Ohio State game included :( recently). I won my biggest bet ever taking the other team and the points and won betting against them with them still winning. I want to bet on teams I know the most about.

"Homer bets"are tough. Sometimes followings team gives you some extra information. One time I told my son a pitcher pitched better than his line score in his last start. He cleaned up on the game and I did fine also.

Only a small bet. For me, its UK Basketball (duh). I root for other temas in other sports, but I can remain objective and bet accordingly. Can't do it with the Cats on the court. So I might put ten bucks on them for fun, but I would never wager anything substantial on a team or a game where I cannot be objective (probably why I'm pretty good at betting baseball; not a huge fan of the game overall, but there are plenty of stats to analyze to help me handicap it without even knowing who the teams are)

I will bet on games my team is in. Though in most cases it is the over/under. I rarely bet on my team to win as I figure, I typically overestimate how good my team is.

Though oddly enough I am more likely to bet against my team. The thought being I win either way. My team wins I am happy, if they lose I collect my winnings.

I make future bets on my favorite teams at the start of the season. I'll bet them in situations week to week if I think I know something that gives the bet value, but tend to stay 'off'

As a general rule I don't. I'm very superstitious especially when it comes to hockey. You should have seen me during the '93 Cup run. Having said that I have bet on the Habs 4 times while in Vegas and have gone 0-4. 3 of those bets were last December and the team pretty much sucked out the joint last season but it still is enough to reinforce my don't bet on them rule.

This past trip I did bet on the Irish but how could I not considering the season they are having and I ended up winning. That however hasn't changed my mind and I'm still very reluctant to place money on one of my teams.

Fancy sports books were built off of people betting with their hearts instead of their heads.

I have an advantage as I hate way more teams than i like, so 9 out of 10 games will be 2 teams that i dont like for one reason or another.

I have no favorites but do rerspect some teams more than others.

I dont listen to the media either when making up my mind. I can tell if its a crummy team or not by watching them play.

of course every team has a bad day but rarely a bad season without some factors in play.

The media always seems to live in the past.

The team I bet on is my favorite. I could be for a team this week and next week bet against them. All depends which team can make me money, they're my favorite

I rarely bet on Ohio State or U Cincinnati. When I have in the past (It's usually in Vegas), I have been pretty successful.

Best win was UC vs Louisville (11/2008). I was with a group of friends on a Friday night at ESPNZone watching the game after betting $330 on UC. They covered!

    Nice thread

I have a very hard time betting anything more then a few dollars or future bets with my favorite teams. It is too hard to watch if I am rooting not only for a win, but also for them to cover/not cover. I used to bet on them any way possible, but it made watching the games difficult, quite frankly bittersweet most of the time.

If I do wager on them, Michigan St or the Detroit Teams, it is always money line bets only.

As a true gambling degenerate, I am proud of my ability to actually stick to 1 rule in a casino.

I have also added to not making wagers for/against my rivals as well. All bets from the brain and not the heart!!!

I do not bet with my heart and loyalty when my teams are involved. I attempt to be unbiased and make the bets based off of the empirical analysis that I've compiled. Obvisiouly, the analysis is always right and I will be retiring based off of my sports bets next month. As a hedge, I will not submit my two week notice until I cash in the winners or not.

Any time Ohio St. has a big game, I usually bet the money line against them. I jokingly refer to it as my "misery hedge", as while I am bummed Ohio St. lost, at least I get paid. If they win, great! Did this last year with Michigan and a few years ago against USC and LSU. Since Ohio St. usually chokes in big games, I do pretty well. Lost against Oregon a few years ago though. Unfortunately, when I go to Las Vegas in two weeks they are playing Illinois, so no action for me on that one!

I bet the Angels when I feel they will win, and don't bet the game at all when I think they will lose. I did bet against them one time and felt sick about it. Never again!

Any given year you can bet on these teams all year long and come out ahead.

    Yankees
    Cardinals
    New England
    NY Giants

For some of these teams, it doesn't matter who is on the field, while others have had the same roster of folks that are just plain consistent.

Then there are the trends. Some trends are more predicable than others. March Madness have some trends that pose a real opportunity because there are 4 of each seed in the tourney. If it was only one #1 seed it would be difficult to find a trend since only one team is involved. But with 4 #1 seeds always playing 16th seeds and averaging X wins, who's playing isn't as important. #1 always plays #16. It's a pattern you can rely on.
