May seem like a strange question, but i`ve never been to Vegas before i`m from the UK.
planning to visit next year for a week, take in some shows, Canyon, Hoover Dam, and plan to get married !.
Of course budgeting gambling money per day, just looking at is as entertainment really.
Does the average slot player ,Roulette, whatever , ever get lucky ?
Whats the average mans best bet of winning anything.?
Can you actually win a fortune on a turn of a slot machine wheels, i`m guessing your replies will be yes you can but your chances are 1,000,000/1

it can happen, yes. 2 guys i know went to the casino with $10k each. they got lucky and walked away with over $1M combined. it definitely can and does happen. does it happen very often? no. the casinos weren't built on people winning. most people lose. play for fun and don't worry about winning. if you win, that's just a bonus.

The odds of winning a 'fortune' is probably at 1 in a million or worse for truly large amounts (million+).

For the record, the odds of winning in Megabucks ($10 Million+ payout, probably the largest you'll find) is 1 in 49,836,032.

    What's a fortune?

The first time I visited (and reason I got hooked), I had just graduated college, a friend took me as a graduation gift to the cheapest place he could find on the strip (I won't admit where I stayed that time), I took $600 for 4 days of gambling, and I came home with $12,000 from nothing but winning craps sessions. I had some kind of beginners luck, as I had no idea what I was even doing at the craps table then. Funny how that works.

It was enough to pay off the remaining college debt, pay off my credit card, and put a down payment on a car. So at the time, I had just hit a fortune :)

But were those two men average men???

Out of curiosity, what were they playing to turn 10k in a mill?

If you have any skill at all, there is a good chance you could win enough playing poker to pay for your trip.

actually they're less than average men, they're complete idiots. but they just hit an insanely lucky streak at Bacc, pressed up to table max 20k per hand each and kept hitting shoe after shoe the entire weekend.

If you want to maximize your chance of making money (and also maximize your chance of busting out early), bet your entire bankroll with each bet. You can find mini-baccarat for $10 minimums, and apparently shifter's seen table max of 20k. If you only bet banker, the probability that you turn $10 into $30220 (12 straight wins, excluding ties) is 1/3481. Another way to say this is that if everyone flying to Vegas tried this, then about one person every 15 flights would be so lucky. If Vegas casinos start turning away your bets at the $30k level, spend $2k to fly to Singapore round-trip, and you can go from $28k to $789000 in 5 more wins, which happens with probability 3.34% (about 1/30). Overall this gives you a 1/100k shot at turning $10 into almost $790k. Straight-up numbers in single-zero roulette may be quite a bit better.

I'm not analyzing the somewhat "fairer" games of craps and blackjack because the amount you win/lose at these games depends quite heavily on specific game scenarios (odds bets payouts, split/double, the count). Most slots are worse, also because it's hard to press your bets, but you can get slimmer house edges playing video poker.

The answer is much as you expected.

If you are betting small amounts, it is POSSIBLE to walk away rich, but very unlikely.

Depending on what you play, it is also not at all uncommon to walk away a small winner. Generally, a game will either give you a fairly decent chance of winning what you bet, or give you a pretty unlikely chance of winning a lot more. The more you can win in a game, the less chance it will happen.

I'd say just have fun with it and play what you want to play.

    A fortune? Not really.

To win a true fortune you either need a miraculous long shot or you would need to parlay smaller and more regular wins in to a large amount.

The problem is: miraculous long shots don't happen regularly, thats why they are long shots, and the average person doesn't have what it takes to parlay the small wins in to a true fortune: the amount of gamble required would just get to where it would be too much to be wagered at one time than what the average person could cope with.

Hey, congrats! Sounds like you will go home a winner either way then.

You can look at it as entertainment, but it is OK to say that you want to go to Las Vegas and win some money.

Of course they do, all the time: everybody can get lucky now and then and have a nice win... if nobody ever won then people wouldn't gamble.

Gambling does require common sense and some knowledge, even for games of pure luck like roulette and slots. Like if you want to sit in the casino and have free drinks all day and your daily budget is $200 then sitting down and playing roulette at $50 per spin or playing on a $5 slot machine - its possible you could do that, but it would require tremendous amounts of luck to get your money to last beyond 15 to 20 minutes.

To win anything? If you bet 35 chips over 35 numbers at roulette you have a 92% chance to win a 1 chip profit...

What Nevyn wrote is pretty much dead on: the size of a win is generally in proportion to the chance of winning it.

Like using roulette as an example, if you have just 1 chip to wager:

    - if you put that one chip on one number the chance that your number comes up is 2.6% (1 in 38 on a 00 wheel), but if it does you win 36 chips (35 chips won plus you get your original chip back)

    - if you put your chip on the intersection between four numbers your chance of winning rises to 10.5%, but you only win 9 chips (8 chips won, plus your original chip)

    - if you put your chip on "RED" then your chance of winning goes all the way up to 47.3%, but if RED hits you would only win 2 chips (1 chip won, plus you get your original 1 chip back)

Again, it depends on the potential amount that can be won and if there are any other wins in the game (IE: you can win on different paying combinations on a slot machine).

But in most cases the odds are much less than one in a million. Like a $1 slot machine where max bet is 3 credits might have a top prize of $10,000 and the odds of winning that are probably in the area of between 1 in 40,000 and 1 in 60,000... or a 25 cent slot with a top prize of $2,000 its probably only going to be about a 1 in 10,000 chance of winning that jackpot

I'm not sure about fortune, but you can go on a huge run. I went on a craps run at a charity event where I had $200 in chips and turned it into $8000 in under an hour. One shooter. Granted, $8000 isn't a fortune, but $200 isn't a normal starting stack, either.

You can generally look at it this way...the larger the jackpot is in proportion to your bet, the odds are worse of hitting that jackpot. In other words, you'd have much better odds of hitting a $1,000 jackpot on a $1 slot machine than $1,000,000.

I would say it is possible in the sports book especially early in the college football season with a few moneyline bets

Texas State University VS University of Houston was a moneyline of $100 to win $11,500

so if you put down $1,000 you would have walked away with $115,000 and of course $5,00 or $10,000 on that bet and you would have been at half a million to a million walking away (less taxes of course)

University of Louisiana-Monroe VS Arkansas was $100 to $6,000 the next weekend so if you had gone heave on that to the tune of $10,000 you could have walked away with $600,000

true the both looked like longshots of course, but I was not really that surprised by either win and I think a lot of other people thought it was possible UH and Arkansas would have a chance to be beaten based on coaching changes for each team and specific players lost or graduated

I don't think hitting on either of those bets (or a few others similar each season) would be near as difficult as consistently beating the math of table games or slots for long enough and with high enough bets to rake in 7 figures

Jennifer Lopez's mother won $2m on a slot machine in AC.
My uncle won $5m on a $10 scratch card.
On a family outing to AC 5 years ago, my aunt won $1000 on a slot.
There are lots of photos of winners of big money all over AC and Vegas.

BTW, the only way to win big money is to play atleast $1 slots 5-10 lines or more. You wont win big with 0.5c slots.

The key word is average, not fortune. The average person does not know basic strategy for example. Nor do they know how to play video poker properly. If the average person won a fortune, I don't see how Vegas would exist.

    Formulas

The average person can win a fortune, but it's rare.
Occasionally the average person wins a fortune.
On average, a person wins a fortune.
A person can win an average fortune.

I wouldn't play if I knew I was going to lose.

Yes, if you had a time machine that let you go back in time and bet on sports underdogs that paid out, you could get rich.
