Saw the strangest thing my last trip. Tournament final table and player in seat 9 makes a sizable raise on the river (1 stack) and everyone folds except player in seat 8. He does announce "This a measurement." And proceeds to push his stack well beyond the line beside #9's stack. "9" turns over 2 pr and and "8" says that was just a measurement not a call, and pulls his stack back. "8" shows top pair and then the talk starts. Nothing abusive but WTH was that???
Dealer calls floor over but by the time he gets there "9" just says screw it and let's play. Dealer says OK and we continue. Never saw ANYTHIHG like this before and don't know if I would have been so courteous. By the way "8" appeared to be a regular @ the casino but "9" did too.

If I was seat 9, I would demand the money. Seat 8 could ask for a count, but that's it! If the money goes into the pot (across the line), it stays, regardless of what the player says.

    "Floor!!!"

Just wanted to say this all sounded like German to me, lol. I finally learned all the craps terminology several years ago, but this? HA, total German.

He should ask the dealer to count it, not put his chips in to count it. Seat 8 was clearly in the wrong here, and not familiar with poker protocol. Once the chips are in (past the cards, past the betting line, however that casino does it) and touching the felt, they're in.

Those chips belong to seat 9 if seat 8 chooses to get out at that point.

It depends on the rules of the room

For the record, I haven't played poker in a casino since before "Rounders" made Hold 'Em popular. Before 2000.

I don't understand why people still try to argue chips over the betting line. That's why the line is there, right? The line is a rule, not a suggestion, right?

This is such an angle shoot it's unbelievable.

Say seat 9 is holding nothing, and mucks his hand after seat 8 pushes out his stack. I guarantee then seat 8 will announce that he's called the bet, not that he's put his chips out there as a measurement. He's trying to buy information, and by saying "this is just for measurement" he gets away with it either way.

    Measure This!

Seat 8 attempted an angle shoot but the dealer or floor should rule in 9's favor.

If those chips don't stay in the pot, rack up immediately and leave. Comment to floor on way out why you are leaving. Too many games in LV to tolerate that horseshit.

If it were a live game I would but it was a $55 buy in tourney and as luck would have it seat 8 busted out and I made the money. But I definitely would have called the floor if "8" did that to me as he could have asked the dealer for a count.

A lot of rooms, the line doesn't mean anything. Every room has their own rules. If he grabbed a stack of chips to "measure" his stack against yours and then pulled it back immediately without releasing his chips, then this is okay according to a lot of rooms. It may be okay but this is definitely an angle move and frowned upon.

There's fault on seat 8, 9, and the dealer.
Seat 9 should never flip over his cards until action is clear. Seat 8 did a d*** move.

    Glad you made the money.
    What hotel was this at?

This was @ the M and we will never know how the floor would have ruled as seat "9" decided to just move on with the game. The dealer did call for the floor so I don't think he was too comfortable with the move by "8".

BK is pretty spot on. In many many rooms the line doesn't mean a thing. Most rooms the chips aren't considered in the pot until they are released from the persons hand or they say "call".

I would say that it was a huge angleshoot by player #8 and player #9 fell for it hook, line and sinker.

I never show my cards until I have verbal confirmation from the dealer that the action is over and it is my turn to show.

Not much player #9 can do besides not falling for the angleshot next time.

If you are unsure of what's going on or who's action it's on, always ask. A lot of action on the table is non-verbal so to make sure something is certain, make sure it's declared verbally.

Seat 8 verbally declared it was a measurement, so as floor I'd be tempted to side with him but give a stern warning to him, the dealer (for not stopping him from 'measuring' over the line), and remind seat 9 to pay more attention.

If I was the dealer the moment someone says "This is a measurement" and starts pushing chips forward I'd push them right back and make sure seat 9 understood what was happening.

I didn't even realize that was in some room's rules. I'll have to be more careful.

I was under the impression that until you released the bet it wasn't committed. I could understand if the dealer/floor wants to warn seat 8 about leaving the bet out too long trying to possibly inducing tells but in the end, IMO, it's up to seat 9 to verify the call before showdown.

I have played tens of thousands of hands of live poker both cash and tourney and I have never heard anyone say that. That move is a BS angle shoot and those chips should have gone to seat 9. Glad to see he busted out on the bubble. Karma got him.

I as well have never heard the term "measurement."

Anyone else heard someone say this?

If I need to know the amount of a bet, I'll ask the dealer for a count. That's what's he's there for.

Angle shooters are one of the lowest forms of life in poker. I saw a guy in AC constantly misread his hand when he'd showdown. A few times, people mucked the winning hand in advance of the realization that his busted flush wasn't enough to beat them.

He was warned several times about calling his hand correctly, but he continued to play dumb. The lesson for all players is to let the cards speak. If you're going to show down, let the dealer muck them for you if you've lost!

    Santé,
    TL
