Do you use the ATM?

I hear a lot about people NOT using the ATM for one reason or another.

    Do you?

I use the ATM as protective. I do not like carrying large sums of money (even worse in check form). I do not trust safes. I have enough self-control to actually feel more freedom when my money can be accessed by ATM anywhere I am. I protect myself from pick pockets. If God forbid, they get my money, I'm toast. But if they get my cards, hopefully I can stop it before it gets used. I actually end up using less of my money because of the ATM-fee disincentive, which I like. But for $1 ATM at Casino Royale, I do not have much problems with fees. If for example, I intend to use $400 for the day, I will purposefully only take out $200 only to see if it finishes before I need the next $200. Usually, that $200 can last most of the day, since mentally I aiming to recycle that money and make it stretch, before I need the next $200. By that time, I would rather let the second $200 spill over into the next day. I could perhaps keep the money in the cage too I guess (I don't know) but then I feel like I have already given the casino my money *upfront* lol!

I use the ATM every trip. Don't know what the big deal is. It's like if you do use it, you are a degenerate gambler (OK, I am, but - you know). I don't want to walk around with that much money, so I use it usually each day of my trip. Especially since I found my bank no longer offers travelers checks.

    Ah HA!

No wonder some people stare when I use the ATM especially in a casino. Degeneracy written all over me LOL!

I think my first time in a casino, I used the ATM because all the money I initially intended on using was gone. I dipped into some money that I shouldn't have. But that was before. The reality is that I actually spent all my money the first time because I did not anticipate large losses on my first time. Having all my money on me too was a huge detriment to financial conservation. Now, I know how to do this thing!

Now, my bankroll is not kept on me. My bankroll is kept right in my bank. I also use the ATM every few days. Rarely I will also go directly to the bank.

No ATM for me and I don't understand why you are willing to give the casino/bank another $4.99 of your hard earned money. Last time I was at Wynn, I saw an ATM receipt for $20 plus the $4.99 ATM fee. What sense does it make to pay a 25% surcharge on your money??? and likely, that person's bank also charged a surcharge.

Obviously, it is your choice as to how you budget your money, but ATM's are the equivalent of loan sharks...albeit for a fixed amount of money. JMHO

    Yes!

But the fees are not so bad. Maybe at Wynn but I am not often at Wynn. The fees are just right to also make me watch myself.

So, what else can you do??? Like I said, I can't get travelers checks anymore. For someone who's daily bankroll is $200, no problem. But I have a larger bankroll, but not enough to do like a wire transfer or anything. But I can tell you I'm not getting $20 out. I use the ATM once a day for $500. On a 3/4 day trip, this will end up costing me $24-$32. And it means I can carry less cash with me.

You just have to know where the hidden ATMs are on the strip with no fees :D

Yeah, you end up just factoring the fees in. Josie, have you ever considered a safe? Or is that not for you?

Sure I use the safe. But it is traveling at the airport, and before you can get into your room. I feel very vulnerable with that much cash on me, and many times I'm solo.

Yes, there are ATM's on the strip with lower fees. I am far too lazy for that. I buy my cigs right at the casino. I buy my pop and goodies for the room right at the casino - and I get my cash right at the casino. Do you see a trend here :)

My bank refunds the fees that ATMs charge. They even refunded the 4.99 charge in vegas.

Not for me. The UK cards that can be used only seem to allow a few hundred dollars withdrawal each day.

I'm no whale but a few hundred dollars added to the bankroll from time to time is just not going to make any difference. I'm quite happy carrying large amounts of cash and have full confidence in hotel safes.

I have an online only bank (no brick & mortar location anywhere). Therefore, I always use the ATM. Sometimes I will use the ATM in the days prior to my trip (my bank implements a max ATM withdraw limit per day, typically an amount much less than I will spend in Vegas). Sometimes I will use the ATM in Vegas. Since my bank is online only, they reimburse my ATM fees. When I'm using the ATM in Vegas, I'll typically use it at a Boyd property or perhaps El Cortez, and the ATM fee is around $3. Then, when my statement date comes, that $3 is put back into my checking account by my bank.

    Ditto.

Maybe I’m naïve or overconfident or whatever, but carrying cash doesn’t bother me in the least. I also use a small community bank (the ONLY people willing to loan me money to start my business 15 years ago so I’m loyal). They only allow $500/day to be withdrawn so I wouldn’t be able to rely solely on ATMs.

One time though, I took such a beating on day one that I worried that I might come up short by the last day of the trip. So I made “preemptive” trips to the ATM on days 1-3, so that I would be able to come up with $2K by the 4th (last) day. Of course, in addition to my original bankroll, I lost the extra $1500 I took out of the ATM on days 1-3. So by the last day I had to borrow a few grand from my buddy. Fortunately, he was either up or even and had plenty to lend me.

Hi, my name is Kyle and I’m a degenerate gambler.

Not sure which bank MikeM uses for ATM reimbursement, but I use Ally.

Two trips ago i used a UK debit card on an ATM in Mirage and it cost me 38$ to draw 350$ of my own money... Lesson learned :)
