So my GF and I are heading to Vegas in December and we are staying a day extra than normal. Since neither of us has really ventured off the strip or Fremont street, we thought we would get a car and explore. What would you recommend as "must see"? Keep in mind that it is December and we've seen Hoover Dam before.

For me, it would be Red Rock Canyon. http://www.redrockcanyonlv.org/index.html Depending on weather of course, but December can be a great time to take a hike. It can be 50-60 degrees but with the sun out, it is quite pleasant. And because that is considered really cold in the area, I have been on some of the trails out there and not seen a single person for miles.

I second Valley of Fire. Interesting rock foundations, hiking that ranges from easy to more challenging, great day trip. Look up the website and decide if it is something for you. We drove through it in July, but just too hot to spend much time outside the car. Of course take water and food with you, either from Vegas or one of the gas stations along the way.

Another option to consider would be a loop drive out to Mojave preserve, or Death Valley, but I'd do Valley of Fire for an all day trip, or maybe Red Rock Canyon if you wanted to be in the desert with a horse with no name (there are horseback rentals available in Red Rock Canyon). No horses at Valley of Fire.

If you like pinball or old style video games, I'd also drive to the Pinball Hall of Fame.

    Have fun!

Depending on the time of year, Red Rock would be great.
You could easily spend a day if nice out and you opt to do some walking.

    Daily Rental

---> New Years Day 2013 will pick up a rental car at my hotel (already reserved) and then drive out to Red Rock Resort.
Haven't been out there in a while and wanted to go back. Will take the scenic route and shoot some HD footage along the way.
Once there we'll play some slots and bowl a game or two. Maybe drive over to M Resort for a visit and a meal then back to the MC.

Valley of Fire! Short drive and it makes you feel like you've slipped into an entirely different universe

Thanks for all the great info! I think Valley of Fire is what we are looking for!

If the weather is an issue, is there any place in Vegas we should check out instead? We were thinking about Hard Rock or I think I saw something about a natural history museum somewhere...

I was at Big Bend National Park in West Texas this past weekend and a Ranger told me that both Valley of Fire and Red Rock will soon be closed 'cause Nevada does not have the money to keep them open. It is a shame. I would see them ASAP. Yeppers

The Hard Rock Casino is full of rock'n'roll memorabilia, so if that's your thing it's certainly worth checking out. There's also a good steak and shrimp off menu special at Lucky's 24/7 in the HR for $7.77. It includes a salad, steak, grilled shrimp and a vegetable. You can probably see what you want to see and grab a bite here in 2-3 hours, leaving plenty of time in the day for exploring the rest of Vegas.

We were just talking about Hard Rock if we stay in town. I didn't realize that special was still around. We both like our beer, and Hofbrauhaus looks nearby too.
