    Just as a refresher

Well I'm off to Vegas in two days and guess what happened to me last night. Yep, MasterCard was comprised!!!! :rolleyes2: At least this time it happened before I went. This does cause me a bit of a problem though as I only have one credit card and sort of need it for the trip. I explained this all to the bank last night and they are sending my new card by courier and said I should have it by tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Sorry to hear about your problem - I do have some important suggestions for you though:

#1 - Since your other card may be your "lifeline" in Vegas if the other card does not arrive in time, Call the customer service number on the back of your other credit card and tell them you are planning a trip to Las Vegas. I have had and heard of many people who get their card "locked" when they go to use it to rent a car, check into the hotel, etc in Vegas. If that is your only card and it happens you will be in big trouble.

#2 - You may want to go to your bank and get a "pre paid debit card" just for use in emergencies. You can't use it for renting a car, but for just about every thing else it will work. Much cheaper than travelers checks, and can be replaced if lost or stolen.

#3 - Depending on the bank of your other card, they will usually overnight the card to you so hopefully it will arrive in time - if it does, call customer service and let them know you will be using the card in vegas as well so it doesn't get locked as well.

Have a great trip and good luck.

The first thing I said to the person I was speaking to on the phone when she told me they have to issue me a new card/number was that I have an 8:00am flight on Friday. She ask where I was going and made a note of it on my file for both my (new) credit card as well as my bank card. Saves me from having to call them tomorrow I guess :rolleyes2: Truth be told I always call the bank whenever I'm leaving town for more than a day, last thing I need is the hassle of having holds being placed on either card.

Not to encourage you to have multiple credit cards, but I do have about 4 and this is one of the reasons why.

Also when I travel I keep at least one of the cards in a separate location in case my purse is stolen.

Despite the fact we all have cell phones, a prepaid calling card (yes they are still available at Walmart - just don't buy a cell loading card by mistake) in a separate spot in your luggage is valuable also. I recently purchased one again & tucked it in my make-up bag just in case. When I was in Nashville last year, our cell provider had issues one day - I was in conference so I didn't notice. They decided to fix them late at night & my mom couldn't get ahold of me as they took system down. She panicked (I am diabetic) and next thing I knew security was bashing on my door & waking me up. Then when I tried to call her back on my cell, of course it didn't work! So card purchased as soon as I got home, lol.

In my situation I also have my debit card - only issue there is a possible larger hold on the card by a hotel, but you can usually get around that with a cash deposit.

Good luck, hope the card arrives in time for you. If you need a laugh, I moved to Las Vegas in 1994 and changed all my addresses with Bank, credit cards, you know the drill. About a week after I was settled in Las Vegas, I went to purchase a concert ticket and the bank blocked the purchase because you know, Las Vegas activity can be suspicious! :D

True to their word my new card arrived first thing this morning! I think when I get back or maybe in a few weeks I'm going to look to add another card of some sort with a low limit just have as a backup. I'm on my 4th card now in the past 12 months.

You might want to get your computer completely cleaned. Or stop going to some of those naughty sites. They can put a lot of junk/spyware on your computer. Seems like you might have picked something up that is getting your card info, 4 times in a year is crazy.

I honestly don't think it's from any of my online activities and I'm not away of these naughty sites you speak of.....

I think it's just do to the fact that I literally use my credit card to pay for everything. I make sure I transfer funds over before making a purchase and use it to get my precious airline points. Yes, I am a point whore. What sucks is the fact that the bank can't tell you where exactly it happened so you can avoid the same place. I usually suspect gas stations as they always seem to be the culprit but last time it happened was I believe at a Tim Hortons so who knows.

4 times in a year seems pretty frequent for just at retail outlets. I would suspect either one place you visit fairly often where its a persistent issue, or online as others suggested.

I use my card for everything, too, and this hasn't happened to me in 5 years (and only once since I got a card).

Trust me I would kill to know where it's happening too. The only time I use my card online is through a well known site like Amazon or I use Paypal if it's offered. I suspect it's a gas station but there's about 6-8 I use regularly and I never pay at the pump.

I think I've had more issues since they've switched to these "chip & pin" cards than I use to have. My dad went through a cycle like this a couple of years ago but that was with his debit card and then it just seemed to stop.

Well, the other possibility is that if it is enabled with "paypass" (the rfID tag that lets you quick pay small purchases), someone is taking your number without it even leaving your wallet, but I'd think that's unlikely.

As for your computer, it doesn't much matter how trusted the site is if your computer is what is compromised (keystroke logger for example). Not the most likely scenario perhaps, but worth at least doing some anti-virus checking, or even doing a recovery if you don't have too much personal software installed on there.

You might want to try paying at the pump instead. Could be an employee at one of those gas stations too - never know.

I hate to bump an old thread but.......guess what happened again!!!!

Yeppers, got a call from the bank last night, they suspect my card was copied when it was recently swiped at a merchant that's under investigation. I started laughing when the guy told me this and then I had to explain to him that this happens every 3-6 months to me and it's almost become a joke now. This current card is the one I got in October so it lasted pretty much 3 months and two trips to Vegas. Of course he wouldn't tell me who the merchant is but that the card was swiped. That more or less told me who it was if it happened in the last two weeks so I asked him if I could guess and if I'm right would he tell me. He then admitted that even he couldn't tell who it was.

As far as where I think it happened. I'm pretty sure it was a Burger King drive-thru last week. Everywhere else I use it to pay with either was chip & pin or PayPass. When I went to pay at BK I showed her the card as I never hand it over anymore and figured she was going to hand me the pinpad but she reached out to grab it and I reluctantly gave it to her. I should have just paid cash at that point but I watched her like a hawk (yes I've become paranoid about my card) as she swiped it at her POS and that's probably what did it.

The ironic part about all this is that I had just recently applied for an AMEX card to use as a back up for when I got nailed again and I had gotten a phone call from them yesterday afternoon just to verify some info on my application so they could approve it which they did.

Wow! That is just amazing! I've had CC cards for over 40 years and never had that happen.

I've had a few disputed charges over the years that I never made, but nothing like this.

This is not normal. Time to find a new bank and/or an RFID blocking wallet.

But it's great that you're pretty easy going about this :)

Wow Habs that is nuts. That is just far too often for it to be a coincidence.

Like others have mentioned I would run an ant-malware app on your computer to be on the safe side. I had my account compromised 2 times within a couple month span(luckily it was just a credit card and not a bank account). Then my parents had their atm card compromised and it locked their bank account for almost 2 weeks until it was resolved. I figured it was a good chance it was something on my computer since i did make an online transaction for them using th computer.
It might be from accidently going on a bad site. Ive had that happen to me where I googled something and hit a link not thoroughly looking at what it was then next thing I know antivirus and anitmalware apps were going nuts.

The last time this happened someone tried charging $5k in agricultural products on my card in Turkey.......I'm like wonderful fertilizers and chemicals now I'm gonna be watched by the government for being a terrorist.

Had it happen twice years ago

Visa actually called me on a sunday morning asking if I was gambling on line in the Bahamas because it did not fit my usual routine. They took care of that in a hurry. sent me a new card.
My best guess was a cabbie from the airrport when I was short on cash ,but it could be anyplace. I try to do most everyday things in cash to minimize the opportunity if possible.
