Reading a few posts today with mentions of kids in Vegas and wanted to share my experience in August. Let me start by saying that I love children and had one of my own. (now 21) BUT, and that is a big but...THEY DONT BELONG IN CASINOS!!! Whew.

I understand if you are visiting family in town or something, but why would you want to drag your screaming brood around the strip in 100 degree weather around all of the homeless, drunks, and young women barely dressed. While on vacation I saw people dragging their tired kids up the strip well after 2am. I was splashed and jumped over several times in the pool. One night at 3 am, I was playing at a bank of machines and there was a baby screaming at the top of its lungs right on the other side. For 5 solid minutes. "Rah, rah, wah, wah, rah, wah." What a buzz kill.

The topper of it all. I was playing the new Playboy penny machine at Caesars. 1am. Had a few in me. Kind of tired and cranky. An Indian family walks past and one of their brood, about 7 years old, plunks herself down in the seat next to me. She then proceeds to start pounding buttons on the Playboy machine next to me. Then starts spinning around in the chair..."whee". The parents start laughing and taking pictures. It took all of my self control not to smack the kid and the parents. The "parents" then put thier other kid in the seat, and take more pictures of the both of them. AT THE PLAYBOY SLOT MACHINE. Ha ha...good times.:grrr::grrr::grrr::grrr:

I really tried not responding to this, I really did, lol.

My kids have all been to Vegas, many times My kids have also travelled all over the world and have seen actual women bathing topless, so the nudity in Vegas never bothered them. They have also eaten at many nice restaurants and have better manners than some adults. We diverted their attention to the drunks. Seeing homeless people brought up good discussions.

OKAY, now with that said, they only were there when Vegas was "kid friendly" and then when they turned 21. They are now 25, 24 and 16. None of them went, once they were over age 12 or so, because there really isn't anything for them to do. We always did pools during the day and nice shows and meals at night. Some arcades and such. but after age 12, 13, they lost interest, so then they wait till they are 21 and join us again, lol.

I do agree with most of your post, in that kiddos do NOT belong on the strip or in the casinos late at night. Period. It is ignorant parents that would let their kids plop down at a machine, even for a photo op. Usually security is all over that in a manner of seconds, I'm surprised they weren't.

But I really, truly lauged out loud at you getting splashed at the pool. Seriously? C'mon now. That's where they are supposed to be, splashing around. I was sitting on the steps once reading a book and some kid splashed me. The mom came running over and started yelling at her kid. I just laughed and asked her to stop and added that I was the one sitting in a pool with a book, they were just being kids having fun and nothing nothing wrong.

With the proper parenting, kids can go to Vegas and have a great time and not bother others, but as you have seen, many times that is not the case. I wonder though, if people are coming from different time zones is the reason so many kids are on the street late at night. Just a thought...

Yeah, if you're at a pool you'll probably get splashed. Some of those other examples seem a bit extreme though. I see kids in Vegas but their mere existence doesn't bother me, per se. I'm just glad I left mine back home where they belong.

Getting splashed at the pool by a 10 year old > getting puked on at the pool by a 21 year old.

On our last trip, there were 3 kids under ten sitting in front of us at Jersey boys. They were actually very well behaved. But I'm not sure I'd have kids at a show that features about 150 F Bombs.

I don't have kids but I used to be one. I would think LV would be awfully boring for a child, especially since they can't play those fun games, drink adult beverages or any of that fun stuff I enjoy. And there's a lot of walking on tiny little legs.

But Vegas is definitely The Happiest Place on Earth for grown-ups with a bank roll and a fresh liver!

If I were 10 again and given a choice by my parents between Disney and Vegas, I would actually probably say Vegas. And to be honest, I wish my parents had "drug" me to Vegas when I was 10, I would love to have seen it back then. I was 35 before I finally got to see it.

And BTW, my parents idea of a family "vacation" when I grew up was fishing in Pierre, South Dakota. Every year- fishing. The Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD. YAY!! :grrr: I envy the kids I see in Vegas. Lucky little bastards. But have them in bed at a decent time. I don't like seeing little ones in WalMart past 10- let alone a smoky casino surrounded by drunks at 2 am.

15 years ago, maybe, now? Na. I mean if you can't drink, gamble, or buy a Fendi bag, what is really the point of being in Vegas? haha.

I still enjoyed it when I was in my late teens, but a kid, definitely not.

I went to Vegas as a kid back in either the very late 70s or early 80s I will have to ask my parents....I am having my mom scan all our old family photos now as well so I will see if she can dig up some Vegas ones (we went to San Francisco afterwards and some other places in California (saw our first whores working in San Fran my brother was like hey whores!)

I would have been about 10 or 11 and Circus Circus was the only kid thing and back in the 80s parents just did not hand kids tons of cash and let them go run wild and we were with my uncle and aunt and cousin as well and so it was pretty damn boring all around....in fact Vegas pretty much sucked

Circus Circus was OK, but the games were pretty much like Astroworld, or Six Flags, or Disney all of which I had been to several times so not even any real excitement there....the casinos (and our parents) were VERY strict about kids on the gaming floor back then and would think nothing of tossing the whole bunch out and it even felt like they watched you as you walked down the halls and really did not even like the kids stopping and looking into the casinos

no big shows back then that would have interested kids for sure as well

overall I rated it as the suck

I would imagine it is a bit better for most kids today since their parents are so much more crappy and let them run wild and just hand them money to shut them up and make them go away (vs having any actual discipline) much less manners

we got some dice, cards were easy to get, and probably some beer cans for our collections (back when even common brands of beer were not sold all over the place).....my brother probably still has all that crap somewhere rotting away in a box

my mom did play one $5 for each of us and I think we got nothing for that (both spins lost) and I also got a little plastic slot machine that would spin if you pulled the level and I think there was some kind of "big spin" machine at one place for kids as well (maybe where I got the little plastic slot machine)

we probably got some matches, soap, and my brother probably stole some ash trays as well and again I am sure that crap is still clogging up his life with a ton of his other total and completely worthless crap

for any kids with manners and parents (even parents with plenty of cash) that don't just buy their kids anything they touch I think Vegas would still totally and completely suck

I don't remember it being so hot, but we were from Houston so define hot please haha (it is a dry heat!) and of course back then the traffic was a lot less so you just drove around

it is sad the casinos let kids behave like they are in any old chain restaurant running around bumping into people and smashing crackers and flinging things much less let them on the casino floor....I think I would be spilling a lot of drinks or stepping on a lot of little feet.....now out by the pool or at Circus Circus I would live with the splashing and rug rats and laugh about it that is where you expect kids to be and to run wild (although a pool or Circus circus in Vegas is still a stupid place to take your kid)

here is a photo from Vegas Chatter I saw the other day

back when we went there would have been security and a guy in a suit running those idiots out before the even got paid.....these are the parents that think them and their kids are special and their kids are "well behaved"...they would probably be special and well behaved with a drink on them if I was around (although I am not the biggest drinker)(although I was when I was younger and I am surprised me and my brother were not trying to finish off peoples drinks back when we went when we were young kids haha)

only the most stupid of stupid parents would have their kids anywhere near the gaming

I don't really pay attention to kids in Vegas and that might come from teaching school where I am so used to kids being around, I think it's normal but on this last trip at Mandalay Bay one night walking throught the casino drinking looking for my next slot machine, I nearly tripping over a child laying on the casino floor asleep. That was strange.

Ok, I have to explain the pool thing. It was the least annoying one of the trip, but I was on a rant! LOL. My Bf and I were sitting on the steps of the center pool at Caesars (where the statue is), sunning and enjoying each others company. Suddenly an 8 or 9 year old boy ran up behind me and literally jumped right over my head and into the pool. I wanted to drown the little darling. (from 2 car accidents I have a bad neck and back, didn't really want kicked in the head) My main point I guess is, Vegas is an adult vacation spot and to me anyway, not a place for kids. I would never have taken my son there when he was little. Just the nudie cards from the flippers, everywhere would have been too much for me.

About a half-million kids live in LV, so even if no parent ever brought their kids there for vacation a lot of them would be still be running around.

And I'm not sure what that picture of a couple of kids standing with their parents in what is obviously a public throughway near a casino cage is supposed to mean. I guess the implication is that the parents spent the night gambling with the kids in tow??? Most large hotel/casinos make families wind their way through the casino to get to/from their rooms. (And to/from some of the restaurants and other hotel amenities.) If they would stop doing that, you wouldn't see kids in and around the gambling areas anymore.

When I read your post I had to laugh because..

first, I feel the same in allot of ways. and..
second, I knew it would attract some varied responses

My son will be 20 - I do not consider myself a "kid person". I'm just not. One of the reasons we enjoy Vegas is the fact that we do not encounter allot of kids while there. We do everything we can to avoid kids in Vegas, we do not go to the pool, we do not go to any kid friendly casino/hotels (I will NEVER go to the RIO again, lesson learned). For the kids that are dragged up and down the strip - I feel sad for them. There are too many places they could go on vacation - I have told my son not to even think about it until he is 21! End of conversation (he agrees no drinking/no gambling = boring).

In May on our flight home I sat next to a very nice lady; who also happened to be an elementary school principal. She was traveling back with her 2 children (both under the age of 8) that she took to visit friends who live in Las Vegas.. while there they visited the strip - she stated she wished they had never done that. Too much cussing, scantily clad women, and the card flippers. Playing the devil's advocate?? :wink2: I wonder... maybe people don't realize what they are getting themselves/children into?? She planned on searching his bag at home for fear her son may have snuck a couple "flicker" cards into his bag for show-and-tell.

People at my work have asked.. should I take my kids?? I tell them - NO! :nono:
leave them with family.. they will have fun while your away - and so will you! that's what my parents did when they visited vegas! (in 1981)

    Don't do it!

Anyone dragging their young kids around Vegas at any hour is Trailer Park Trash in my book.
Sorry but if you can't afford a baby sitter then you can't afford to be in Vegas! Plain and simple!

Recently in the LVRJ, a local complained that the opening of a gay club in Neonopolis would ruin the "family-friendly atmosphere" of Fremont Street. People obviously have a wide range of opinions on what's appropriate for children. You need a license to catch fish, but not to be a parent.

My wife and I play a game when we're in Las Vegas. It's called "spot the kid with a smile."

    The Rules are:

If she can spot a child with a smile on it's face, I buy her a pair of shoes. *

*Exception: If the child is in a restaurant or on the way to the airport, it doesn't count.

I've never had to buy a pair of shoes yet, and we've been playing this at least twice a year for 10 years.

We took our youngest daughter to Vegas for her 21st birthday last year and I played it with her during the trip. "No shoes for Julia," is now a family catch phrase!

That's a moot point. Those parents aren't taking their kids into the tourist areas where objectional elements are. Do you bring your kids to the hotels and adult entertainment spots in your home town?

"No Shoes For Julia" sounds like a great band name!

My friend and I, both middle-aged, were walking behind parents with a stroller and a three or four-year old - who kept saying "LOOK!" at the porn cards strewn across the sidewalk. I felt obliged to pick them up. Yeah, they make great souvenirs for the guys at work.

I hear you on the bad back - nothing worse than a sudden unexpected jolt of pain because someone else is not paying attention. Yikes!
