I just got back from a 9 day trip to Vegas -

This trip was a combination of meeting family and friends, along with a combination of staying downtown and at my favorite casino- Boulder Station.
But, the most special part was that I took my son and his girlfriend - both Vegas newbies.

And, that, is where the situation and question for all of you begins....

The first four nights of the trip were spent downtown - I booked my son and his girlfriend at Golden Nugget for the first three nights. I got a crazy deal for only $32 a night! I booked myself at Fremont Hotel - nice and just across the street from them.

The flight was great - we flew SWA (which I have absolutely fallen in love with) and we rented the car from Alamo. Watching the face of my son (who is 24) seeing the Strip for the first time was priceless! We arrived at Golden Nugget around 11 PM. I parked the car in the valet and we went in together to check them in. After checking them in - they went on up to see their room and I drove across to Fremont Hotel and got checked into my room.

Anyways, three days into the trip, I find out what had happened to them after they got to their room (at Golden Nugget)... they had kept it from me so as I wouldn't "be bothered." My son and his girlfriend walked into the room - looking around at it - and then realized, they had left their one suitcase out in the hallway. They said it was only seconds - but, the suitcase was gone!!

They went and told security and various managers. Security didn't seem interested - told them it would be a week before they could run the tapes to see who took it. The managers or other staff they talked to didn't seem to care too much either. On their last day - they asked the management again about it - and they were comped a meal at Carson Cafe. (Incidentally, the meal was so bad, that they didn't even have to use thier comp).

So, here's the question - is there anything I can do - now that we're back? Should I complain to Golden Nugget management/security? I understand it's not really their fault, but, I don't like that they just snubbed them off and acted like it was really no big deal.

    What would you do???

You have a number of factors against you.

It was their bag, not yours.
It was their room (even though you paid for it)
    They filed a report,not you
    Time has gone by
    You are not in Vegas

There is so little they can do anyways, unless they run tapes and care, and even then they have to identify the person.

Sad situation, but not sure what you can do at this point. Sucks. They should have clued you in and YOU MIGHT have been able to persuade somebody to help. And, that is only a GUESS.

Looking back - If you had walked them to their room after checking them in, you could have made sure all bags were safely inside their room before you left to check in to your hotel. But one shouldn't have to do that with an adult son and his GF.

If you arrived at 11pm and checked them in right away, then from your son's description of the events the bag disappeared from the hallway about 11:30pm? Did your son and GF notify security and talk with these managers immediately when they realized their bag was taken from the hallway? Or did they talk to Security and managers the next morning?

Something to consider: There may be other details your son and GF did not tell you. Those other details may be why "Security didn't seem interested". Those details may also be why they didn't tell you about the incident when it happened.

Regardless of the details, I'm sorry your son and GF lost their bag. It's a tough way to learn a lesson.

Customer service seems to be a thing of the past.

I had a similar discussion with a friend at dinner last night. He shipped his golf clubs by Fed Ex with ins. and when they arrived back at home his driver was broken. They gave him the run around till he was worn down and finally gave up. it used to be that the best and simpleist way to resolve a problem was to write a letter to a company president, but in this day and age I dont know whether that means anything. Luckily for Fed Ex, my buddy retired last year or he would have cut off the Fed Ex account at a large ,million dollar plus company. If your son was a big gambler the casino would give a crap about him but otherwise they could care less.Once your son accepted the food comp that was that.

    My alternate theory

Security probably thought he was just another airhead who left his bag at the airport or in a cab or shuttle. A lot of things could have happened here. I once picked up the wrong bag at the AP ,but that was alcohols fault, not mine.

What would I do if I was in your position? Ask your son if he has kept in contact with the security department of the Golden Nugget. If he has not, that probably means he is not interested in pursuing it. Then you should leave it alone. It's his decision, not yours. If he has contacted them about reviewing the tapes, suggest he uses only one person in security so he doesn't have to explain the whole story every time he follows up. Then just give him encouragement without fueling an unnecessary anger fire. It's his problem, not yours.

I really appreciate all of the replies -

A long time ago, I learned to "pick my battles" and, I think this is one I'm not going to pursue. Like everyone said, I don't know how many "seconds" they left the bag out in the hallway, etc. I believe they did talk to security that night and different managers the following days, but there's just a lot of "unknown" factors.

In hindsight, I wish I would have gone up to the room with them for two reasons: so something like this wouldn't have happened and to see what the room looked like. I also wish they would have told me about it right away - it's hard to fight something days or weeks later....

The upside to all of it is - my son and g/f did get in to see the I Heart Radio Music Festival on Friday night - tickets were going for $350 and up per person - they got two tickets for $100 for both!!!!

You win some, you lose some....

Not knowing you son, but well aware of others.... I think the comment about "maybe there is more to the story" could be the reason you did not hear about it right away.

Anything from a quickie in the room, to went for a drink, to had an argument, etc. etc.

After all, it would be strange to CARRY a bag, and then enter the room while leaving the bag outside.

    Just saying.

I also agree with the OP in "picking your battles". This one is done and gone. Pretty sure you could spend a great deal of time and the only result would be stress and grey hair.

I think the number one thing is you have to act immediately or there is probably little they can do unless it happens someone in another room took it and is on video passing by and picking it up and walking into a recognizable room

I still find it disturbing that the hotel/casino could not or would not review tape immediately after being told of the incident

    1. they potentially have a thief staying on property

    2. they potentially have a thief or thieves working/casing the property

    3. word is out now

    4. what would happen if your kids or some old lady (even worse) had opened the door right as the bag was being taken and a confrontation ensued.....I think the sued part of ensued would probably be a large part of the equation depending on how the confrontation turned out

it would not shock me at all if it was another guest that is just society today....I live in a college town and have lived in several others and the college kid apartment areas are always having car break in especially and many are always looking for some "scumbag" lurking around when sadly a large % of the time that scumbag is some other college kid that lives in the complex or one of their college kid friends over for a visit......trash and scumbags have infiltrated pretty much 100% of every part of our society....sure that has always been the case to some degree, but not to the degree it is today

I don't think there's anything you can do, but your son can still file a police report. (It's too late now, but my tip for any incident like this in the future is to quickly go around "security" and call the police.) Nonetheless, a police report even at this late date might have an amazing ability to focus the attention of the hotel.

What they should have done at the time is file a police report.

See how long it takes Casino security to get the tapes loaded for the cops.

More importantly, there's not much the casino is empowered to do if they do catch someone on the tapes. Unless its a casino employee, they'd have to match that face with a name or room # the person entered. And if that person was checked out they'd have to then report it to the police anyway.

No one leaves a bag outside their room on the way in, and it's hard to believe that they could have that happen and not mention it first thing. How is not mentioning it somehow sparing your feelings? It wasn't your bag.

What should you do?, You should tell your family to keep better track of their bags, along with coming up with better stories, cause something aint right here.

No way security says it'll take a week to look at the tapes either.

By the way, if that was their only suitcase, did they wear the same clothes/underwear the whole trip?

To answer a few of the questions -

They had a suitcase (with most of their clothes, shoes, etc) in it, as well as a backpack and another carry on bag. A little overkill for a 4 night stay, but, they're young and it was their first time to Vegas...

I don't know why they left the suitcase out in the hall - and according to them, it was only for a few seconds. Again - they're young, "in the moment", and not seasoned travelers, by any means.

They didn't want to tell me to save me from getting upset. It was the start of the trip and all.

The last day, they approached the police about filing a report - the police told them they would have to go down to the station to file a report and said, even with the report, the likelihood of them finding the suitcase was nil.

They had a change of clothes in the backpack - but, I should have caught on when they asked to stop at Ross on the Strip because they didn't take enough underwear with them??? Also, I should have been clued in when they kept making excuses not to go swimming in the shark pool.

The crazy thing about it - is that my son misplaces his wallet and cellphone constantly - and I was so worried that he was going to lose his license and have trouble boarding the plane on the return flight - well, he didn't lose his license or cell phone, but did manage to lose all of his clothes!

My son was in that boat at one time in his life. Thinking he had to replace his license a few times in early 20's. Lost track of cell phone issues-LOL!

With that piece of information, I can see this happening. Luckily for us, he somehow grew up in his late 20's and is now paying bills, keeping track of himself, etc.

Surprisingly this happens all the time. The hotel I work in has under 100 rooms, and we find suitcases in the hall about once a week in the middle of the night.

Something else surprising that people do, is leave their keys in their car, and just walk away, even if a valet is not around.
