I have been playing vp for the last 15 years, and I have only had 4 royals. I know I save the right cards, but why do some people get royals all the time and I don't. My son never plays and I tried to show him how to play, and he got a royal. My sister who lives in Vegas gets them all the time, why don't I.

Well, it is a game of chance and even though the odds might say you should hit a royal flush about once every 40,000 hands it doesn't mean you are entitled to.

Another important factor is how much you play... like saying that you have played for 15 years means absolutely nothing:

As an example: if over that 15 years you only play VP in Vegas for about 3-4 hours a day on your 3 day trips that you take once a year then in that case you would actually be mathematically one to two royal flushes above the expected norm for that amount of play.

And thats a big thing here: some people play only a few hours a day and thats all they can take, others play 10-12 hours a day and could go longer... some go multiple times a year to Las Vegas or play as well at a local casino... some only play in Las Vegas.

About the first 5 yrs after I started playing VP
    I never hit a Royal.
I'd play VP on my Vegas trips only.
    So....about 2 to 3 weekly Vegas trips a year.
My wife just starts playing...BOOM !...she hits a royal !
    .
I use to play "Dueces Wild" exclusively --
but being told that it is more diffulcult to hit a Royal
playing Dueces Wild ( because of strategy ) --
    I switched to JOB.
    .
    I kept telling myself --
"When I finally hit that Royal -- the flood gates will open --
and I'll start hitting more Royals."
    .
    Well,
that's pretty much what happenned !
It culminated w/ my Vegas trip last year --
    where I hit a 50c progressive Royal -- $2,800 and
the next morning hitting 2 more Royals within 30 mins
    of each other !!!
All 3 Royals within a 24 hour period for about 5 grand !!!!:nworthy::thumbsup:
    .
    Hang in there !

I've hit one royal, it's hard. Look how many times you flop 3 of a kind and dont get the 4th.

How many hands a year do you play? (hours per hand * hours)

    Which games do you play?

Maybe you aren't pressing the Draw button just right... seriously it can just be luck if you haven't gotten your share. But what we found is, if you want to get Royals - play a LOT. Working back from that, play games and denomination that let you have a chance to play a lot, and play as accurately as you can.

Over the long term, at least for full pay deuces wild, royals should come about every 45,281 hands. For the past several 8 day trips to Vegas, Wifey and I had played over 150,000 hands of VP per trip. Since May 2002, we've combined for approx. 2.2 million hands of VP played. We would have played more VP if it wasn't for the roughly 250 hours of blackjack that I played during our early years in Vegas. After a couple bad beats at blackjack, I switched to playing VP along side Wifey. For the number of hands of VP played, that would come out to about 48 royals. We're at 46 royals between us so we're pretty much right on schedule. Our trips range from getting no royals to getting 6 royals between us. You just have to be patient.

I'm sure you're not doing anything wrong. Like others have said, how much do you play.

I myself play a few times a month locally but when I'm in Nv, I play for many hours the duration of my trip.

I seem to hit at least one every trip but many times it doesn't hold me over for the whole trip since I do play so much.

I once hit five royals in one day at the Rio, that's the most I've ever hit in one day and have never repeated.

I've even hit two on our last cruise, paid all my expenses which was nice!

Hey, you just don't know. It always surprises me when I hit one except when I only need that "one" perfect card!! I should be surprised, those seem to be the hardes to get !!

I don't know how many hands we've played but my wife has had 23 Royals since 2005. I've had 16 since 2007, so 39 total. I used to play mostly craps but now I am mainly a VP player, with just a session or two of craps each trip.

When we moved to Vegas my wife got 9 Royals in a 10 month span. After that, she never got another one for 2 years.

I had 6 in that same approximate time frame and haven't hit another since 03/10.

We've also both been dealt 1 Royal each.

That's all going to change in 2 weeks.

I'm not too sure about your numbers here. You claim 150,000 hands per 8 day trip. 600 is a reasonable number for hands per hour. Doing the math: 150,000/600=250 hours / 8 days / 2 players = 15.6 hours a day. Do you really stare at a VP machine for nearly 16 hours a day for 8 days straight??

That sounds pretty horribly un-fun. Perhaps 150,000 hands per trip is a big over-estimate, thus the rest of the numbers are too large as well.

150,000 hands is a LOT to put in. But even if you did put in that many, not hitting a royal in that time wouldn't be statistically that unlikely.

Take something much simpler to calculate...the odds of rolling a one on a single die. You should do it one time in 6. But what are the odds of rolling say 15 times in a row and not hitting a 1? About 13%. 20 times in a row? About 7%.

We could do the same math for your royal question if you always played the same game.

Not positive, but isn't Cruiser and his wife the ones that plop themselves down at the machines at Alainte and even eat some meals there while playing?
Or am I thinking of a different degenerate gambler?:wink2:

Wife just fairly recently began to play VP. She only plays Dueces. Well the VERY first time she played she got 2, yes 2 Royals -no wild - on dollars on the same machine within an hour. She by no means plays even close to perfect play. She will hold say a 6c. She has no strategy. She is well ahead of me on the plus side, I being down playing 95-98% strategy.
I really think she is on to something unintentionally. I honestly believe the machines recognize perfect play and reward accordingly. Her returns prove it over the last couple years.

Maybe I read this wrong, but from what I reading is you are saying your wife has no strategy and doesn't play what would be considerd good strategy...yet she wins more than you.

Then you go onto say that the computer recognizes good strategy and rewards it, but you play good strategy and are behind...confused.

For me my problem is patience. After a while I start getting frustrated and start playing stupid.:grrr:

All the sucessful VP players stick it out through thick or thin.:nworthy:

I'm going to try again this next trip, hopefully with more patience.

I had a 3 and 1/2 year winning streak going to vegas 3-5 x's a year,4-7 days at a time. I noticed when I didn't hit a royal, I hit 2 st. flushes. After that I had a year and a half drought. During the drought time I often listened to people locals usually complain that they tightened up the machines. Human nature looks for reasons other than random luck. During my win streak I thought I had a system!!??? Boy do I feel dumb. Good Luck!

All else being equal, I would agree. The other thing for me is to go with your gut when you feel lucky and feel like you're going to win. If you're not feeling the vibe or your pissed or frustrated about something, do anything else but gamble.
