Wife and I are either doing a trip to Minnesota or somewhere in the carribean for a few days during the second week of October. If we go to Minnesota we'll be in the Park Rapids area (4 hours north) for 2 or 3 days. After that gonna head back to MSP area for 1or 2 days. We want to stay in a nice area and maybe at a hotel with a nice pool/waterslide or just a really nice hotel.

Any suggestions from the Minnesotans or frequent visitors?
    Thanks, Joe

Like all things, cost is a factor.

Private resorts have nice cabins, but those don't come cheap. There are decent chain hotels along the main highway through the city. I don't remember which ones, but I'll see them this weekend, I'll be up that way. None of them have a pseudo-water park as part of them.

Park Rapids is a nice area, albeit a little light on the entertainment if you're not boating on the lake. In October it will be cool on the water, most likely.

I'm guessing you have a specific reason for choosing it. If not I'd say go to Brainerd, or perhaps Duluth. I know Brainerd has at least one hotel that has water park amenities and there is probably more to do in the area. Park Rapids has the headwaters of the Mississippi 20 miles north of the city. It's a nice state park, but there's not a ton to see there.

And if you're looking for a water park hotel in the cities, there use to be one on the north and south side of the metro, but the north side hotel is completely closed. The south side hotel/water park is near Mall of America. That's the only one I can think of in the metro.

I'm 34 and have been to Itasca SP/ Park Rapids at least 20 times. I spent my first birthday there. That was our family vacation spot while growing up and I've been there with my wife several times. She loves it as much as I do. We haven't been there in a few years and are looking forward to the worlds best burger at the Royal bar on Main street and a ice cream cone at Snyders pharmacy.

Been to Brainerd and Duluth several times also, but never stayed there. May have to hit the casino in Walker for a bit too.

As far as money goes, we're willing to pay for a nice place to stay around Minneapolis up to around $300/ night. I know for that much we can get something really nice.

A private resort would be awesome for us. Either a cabin or a lodge would do, as long as they're updated. Any suggestions on a place like that around Minneapolis.

The waterslide pool thing is just an idea of something cool, not a necessity.

Not exactly what you're asking for, but we've stayed at a couple of hotels in downtown Minneapolis on Nicollet Ave and really enjoyed ourselves. Everything was so close and the with the series of skybridges, you could get around w/o even going outside. Hopefully the weather in October won't be a factor.:evillaugh

have you tried Priceline before? very easy to score a good deal on nice downtown Mpls hotels

if you want to come close to your budget, the Graves 601 right downtown in block E would be very accommodating

    You beat me to it.

Graves is a highly recommended hotel in downtown Minneapolis.

I live two hours south of MPLS and my past two Vegas trips I have stayed at a hotel the night before my flight since I have flown out early. Both times I stayed at the Residence Inn by Marriot in Edina. They let me park my car there and don't charge for it while I am gone. The rooms are true 2 room suites and also have a kitchen with a dishwasher (something my house don't even have) and a stove and full size fridge. Mall of America is very close, as is Southdale Mall. Place is very nice and there is a pool and indoor playground all on site.

Oh, and BTW- most Minnesota State Parks now have cabins onsite that have been built by prisoners. I have heard they are very very nice. I would be willing to bet Itasca has some.
