We're looking forward to our 5 day stay late in Sept but having a hard time finding reasonable rooms. We've stayed at MSS a couple of times but were unable to get a reservation for Friday and Saturday.
I've made reservations at Gold Spike mainly because we want to be Downtown. We aren't expecting much, just clean and quiet.
    Will we be disappointed?
Our cost will be $250 plus 13% tax and $7.95 service charge per night.:grrr:

The spike rooms should be fine, better than they used to be, service is pretty good, and the price is right. The casino is nice but disappointingly sparse, most likely due to the fact they have all hand pays(which means you really cant just throw in a 10 or 20 and see what happens), why they dont change that is beyond me.

The rooms are small but comfortable. You mentioned clean and quiet. I have stayed there for the last 2 years and my rooms have been very clean and all of the staff have been very friendly and accomodating. I stayed on the 3rd and 6th floors and both have been VERY quiet. You can hardly hear anyone other than someone coming in or out. At least that is how it was for me. I am booked there again in Januray. Kayak was consistently around $400 with tax and resort fee. I called reservations and got 8 nights for $252.56 with tax and resort fees included.

They offer wifi. There are no bottle openers so throw one in your suitcase if you think you may need one. They also have vertical blinds so the rooms are not pitch black at night. I didn't have a view but I never open the shades anyway so that didn't bother me. I would have liked a fridge, and there is no ice machine. These are petty things. GS is inexpensive, friendly, clean and close to the funof downtown. I think You will enjoy it. I like their restaurant too.

Here is my Gold Spike review:
First off, if you are looking for a fancy room in a fancy hotel for your Vegas trip, look away from this review about this hotel and look elsewhere, after all, Vegas has a ton of 4-5 star super resorts, you will have no problem finding what you are looking for.

What do you want from your Vegas hotel? Do you want clean basic accommodations at a rock bottom price? The Gold Spike is for you. The rooms are very basic, but clean and comfortable. The (flatscreen HD 32") TV has a ton of channels by Vegas standards (often Vegas hotels will give you very few channels, they don't want you watching TV, they want you in the casino). The Pool (like the rest of the hotel) has been recently remodeled, it's not big and fancy, but gets plenty of sun and is just fine for your basic pool needs. The staff is friendly and helpful; the Casino is small but a very fun place to play. You are a solid block from the rest of Fremont, so you will do some walking by downtown standards (you do 4 blocks worth of walking just to get out of your average strip resort). I didn't eat in the restaurant, but some friends of mine did and reported that the food was very good. You do get hit with a somewhat comically named "resort fee", but for that you do get Wifi which had a good strong signal. And again, the low room rates are hard to beat.

I've only had one unpleasant stay at Spike out of several, and that's because my plane was delayed coming in for New Year's Eve and they gave me the very last room available, which was smoking and had backed up plumbing. They are the little engine that could.

Thanks for all the replies, but......my wife just called Harrah's, giving them our player's card number and asked what they could do. They comped 2 nights, gave us a great deal on two more and one night at the normal cost! Whoooopeee!! So, we are paying 1/3 of the amount we would have paid at GS.
We really like Downtown but for the difference we can take the bus!
    Thanks again everyone!
Wish me luck at the bj and vp machines and in our softball tournament!

This used to be my (as well as the guys from cheapovegas.com before they sold the site to greedy corporate types) GOTO hotel in Las Vegas before the renovation. After the renovation I have stayed here about 3 times. Usually only because they have the 7.77 room nite special from las vegas advisor.

The rooms are clean, comfortable, and basic. Now that they have a pool I will consider staying here more often, but am still on the lamb about having to pay a 8 dollar a night "resort fee"! I don't like resort fees and I'll pretty much do whatever I can to avoid paying one. Even if that means staying at a different property for a few dollars more. (since most of the time when you add in the resort fee they are about the same price.

I'm happy to hear you got a couple of comp nites at Harrahs. They offer great rooms with NO RESORT FEES!

My fiance's neice is staying there the 1st week of Sept when we are all there for our wedding (everyone else is at the Golden Nugget or Venetian). She's an adult, but traveling alone. DO I need to be worried about her?

It's no more or less dangerous than traveling anywhere else. Not sure why you'd consider Spike to be a risk as compared to the trip itself.

Last time I was in Vegas (2 yrs ago), it was very sketchy looking and there were somewhat frightening looking people hanging around the casino door as we drove by....I knew they remodeled, so I wasn't sure if they ahd really cleaned up or if it was just cosmetic.

There are homeless people and sketchy characters all over, even on the overpasses of the strip. Gold Spike is just a block off heavily-traveled Fremont. No better or worse than any other downtown lodging, I'd say. If your niece uses good common sense, she should be just as fine as going shopping in her own hometown.

Thank you! You've made me feel better. I realize Vegas and every city is full of bad people, just want to make sure she is in a clean, "safe" place....if there is such a thing in Vegas....LOL

On a side note, guess I'm glad she's not staying at the Palms....LOL:nono:

If she's truly worried, the security guards at the Spike will escort her to Fremont St. I have seen them do this before.

That said, I have stayed at the Spike before and it is definitely a clean place.

I also have always felt safe there. However, I am a somewhat large man.

In 11 years of going to vegas I have walked ALL over downtown las vegas, Including not so desirable areas south of The Western, Main Street, Casino Center, and even Naked City, and i have NEVER EVER had any troubles. Then again I'm a 250+ plus former professional wrestler but still. The Spike today is 10 times safer than it was 10 years ago.

She will be just fine. I'll gladly offer my services as a body guard if I'm in town for a fee of say 2 drinks an hour. LOL. In all seriousness tho she will be perfectly safe. Just walk with purpose and urgency and avoid stopping for too long in between the walk to the hotel and fremont and she should be just fine.

I have traveled downtown each trip since 1997, walking all over Ogden St, and the side streets. One should always follow their gut feelings and be aware of their surroundings but the worst thing I have encountered were a few winos panhandling. Often i would go for a walk at midnight or in the early am.

I remember the old GS.....pretty run down but I have stayed at the Gold Spike last year and the year before and will be there at the end of Jauary again in 2013. The rooms are comfortable, clean and very quiet. The staff are very accomodating and friendly, and there is always security around. I walk to and from the hotel at all hours and never had a problem or seen anything remotely sketchy. I would worry more for her on the Strip where i have noticed a substantial increase in drunks, panhandlers, porn pedlers and other homeless and down on their luck folks. Never used to see drunks sleeping at bus stops and on sidewalls but yu no now. I have never seen any downtown though. I wouldn't worry about her; she should just exercise caution as she would in any city.
