I think the Harmon will remain LV's largest billboard for quite some time.

I don't see the "appeal is likely" line anywhere, did they edit the article?

And in order to appeal, the construction company would first have to get an injunction to prevent the demolition pending appeal (which would include showing they have some sort of chance to win the eventual appeal). And since the judge granted it without alleging it was for safety reasons, I don't see how they could get the injunction.

So personally, I think the demolition will go ahead sometime this winter. The question then becomes, what does MGM do next? Can't see them building again just yet.

The overall lawsuit will go on for years, though.

    What does MGM do next?

There are only a couple of things that I would consider positive for that area of the city center.

    - build a casino there. it's where the aria should have been placed, I have only been in Aria once or twice because it is so difficult to get to when strolling down the strip.

    - if they don't build a casino, then they should build a teleport, tunnel, sling shot, or maybe one of those tubes they use at the bank drive through to move people from the old Harmon spot to Aria.

Anything else will just be a disappointment. (sadly, it will probably end up a Starbucks or Walgreens)

I just want to know how the heck they're going to do this without compromising other buildings within City Center or Cosmo which isn't even part of that complex. I guess that's why I'm not an engineer.

They won't compromise the other buildings, but I want to know how they are going to stay open at the places nearby. Going to be quite a mess when they implode. Will surely be a sight to see, but I wouldn't want to be staying anywhere near there.

Chalk this one up to the long long list of "only in Vegas".

No implosion is planned, the plan as of now is to tear the building down piece by piece, due to obvious safety concerns. An implosion would at least be something cool to see at CityCenter, of course they even screwed that up.

Hmmm, that's not what MGM requested in the past. Here's a few examples:

Google search for Harmon Tower Implosion

nothing like staying at the Cosmo with the thumping beats of electro music on one side of the room and jack hammering and metal cutting going on on the other side of the room! :evillaugh

maybe the guest will get lucky and the sound waves will cancel each other out for a real great nights sleep

Well this is what I was wondering. If its a controlled implosion I'm guessing most of City Center would have to be evacuated for some period of time. No car or pedestrian access at all. If its a 'piece by piece' deconstruction this could cause some fairly long term noise, dust etc problems. Cosmo could not be happy whatever solution is devised. I smell lawsuits coming.

What a fricking gargantuan waste of money. Did people that put $$ down get it back??? Or is that another lawsuit looming?

I believe that all of that has been settled and was settled when it was realized the property would not be opening even without the defects or that it would not meet the original design...I believe it was the residence and condotel portion of the property that was knocked off when it was discovered the building had faults and could not be built higher

sadly I bet there are a few litigious stragglers that will sue because of "lost profits on their investment" :poke: but I think the vast majority welcomed the chance to have their prayers answered and to get out of that "investment" with their money back

I think that statement is generally true. I know a realtor responsible for multiple sales at The Harmon and he has stated most of the investors, though they sued to get deposits back, confided to him they were relieved the building would not open.

Ironically, this realtor ended up hurting because he anticipated huge profits from those sales and spent/borrowed accordingly on his own investments. When the money did not come he was bankrupted, lost his house (foreclosure) and investments, and is now starting over. Like many others, he surfed the wave right off a cliff.

When The Harmon does come down it will be symbolic of the people who went down with it. One can only hope they all recover and that Las Vegas does too.

I can't see them doing it piece by piece. Just a 2am implosion on a winter weeknight.

    Generally, yes.

But if they decide they have to evacuate Aria and Cosmo, or example, then it becomes a much bigger deal.

If there is an appeal, it would be because the construction company came up with a reason to justify preserving the building until their court case advanced. Which would be a dumb move because the county would be forced to reassert their belief that the building is unsound and needs to come down now. That would be more damaging to them than to let MGM proceed and just tear it down because it's theirs and they want to.
