Has anyone read Fifty Shades of Grey?

What is the hype about?

I haven't read it, but I read a synopsis and frankly it sounds weird and disgusting.

 

Tried to. Awful, horrible writing. No surprise to me it started as "fanfic" a la Twilight. Couldn't make it through that tripe either. Fear of Flying or even Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty books were far far better if erotica or BDSM is what you're looking for. I've been reading this genre since I discovered My Secret Garden in high school, and there is much better available than text messages masquerading as a novel....

I stopped reading non fiction books all together. I used to read best sellers once in a while but most of them weren't very interesting and the writing was pretty ordinary.

 

If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's waiting for me at home to read. My neighbor insisted on giving it to me. I believe they refer to it as mommy-porn She said, and this is what she said, that it's a good story, and eventually you just start skipping through certain parts to get to the story.

 

Yes, I read the book. Could care less what happens to the characters. No interest in the next two books.

Stupid Book. Waste of time. Terrible Writing. Wish I could get my money back.

I've read it - absolute rubbish. You couldn't pay me to read the 2nd and 3rd ones.

It basically has 6 steps that the book just repeats over and over and over until you want to kill both characters yourself.

She bites her lip and rolls her eyes, they have nookie, he slaps her about, she cries, she says she wants 'more', he says he'll try.

It was a waste of a day on a sunbed on my holiday as far as I was concerned.

 

I'm glad it isn't just me. I couldn't be bothered to finish the first book. Tedious.

 

I was going to read it but then I saw 50 Shades of Greyskull. If that's the way this thing reads, I'll pass. People knock romance novels and erotic lit all the time but let me assure you it's not supposed to be that bad.

I LOVE erotica and romance novels. Have since I was 9 and read the entire library revolving stand of Barbara Cartland I have read great books and I have forced my way through awkward and bad books. And I couldn't get beyond ~20 pages of 50 shades....

As I said to a friend on Facebook - it's not that I'm a prude - it was the writing.

I knew NOTHING about this stupid book, and yet, last month all of a sudden I found it omnipresent (I was in London at the time). It was the topic of questions on quiz shows, it was being noted as the super hot bestseller, I saw people reading it on the subway, I heard girls talking about it at the coffee shop (they were derogatorily referring to it as THAT BOOK, haha!).

This is the most I've learned about it's content. I saw a quick blip that referred to it snarkily as "mummy porn" when I was in England. I honestly thought it must have some old historical element or be about ancient Egypt or something. Only now after reading these comments do I see that obviously "Mummy" was just the Brits' version of "mommy".

 

Hmmm....I saw this thread and expected much more positive comments. My wife who reads a lot and some of her friends have all read it and were as she put it "entertained". I'm not a big reader of fiction but was planning to read it after talking to her about it. I'm very open minded and she knows I'm a fan of erotica and the different "play" some people indulge in so she thought I'd like it. Not so sure now....

She has it on her Kindle so I was going to buy the paperback but maybe I'll just read a bit of it on hers and see what I think.

I don't read fiction anymore (besides Sue Grafton). I used to really enjoy reading crap like Jacqueline Susann and her contemporaries. The 70's and 80's produced so much wonderful crap to read. And then it would be done as a tv mini series. I even sought out "Naked Came the Stranger", remember that one? Those Newsweek writers who made a bet to write something horrible and see if it would get published. It became a bestseller! I'm not a snob is my point. Anyway, this book sounds boring. I don't see the point. If you want something dirty...that's why porn was invented. I'm not going to read it.

 

I agree LolaDoggie.....really sounds too soft for my taste.

 

Deano - if you haven't read the Sleeping Beauty books by Anne Rice (writing as A.N. Roquelaure) or a couple of her other early books under pseudonyms - Belinda, Exit to Eden (much raunchier than the cheesy movie version, though one never passes up Paul Mercurio unclothed!) start there. Fun stuff. I tend to favor older options. Anais Nin & Henry Miller. Erica Jong. There are tons of reviews out there condemning the poor writing of 50 and offering other options.

My gf read that book and sometimes she would read some sentences from the book out loud- I would purposely tell her to repeat it as now whenever we argue I say a sentence from the book and we just both start laughing

 

I wish I could come up with the next "trendy" book.

If this is any indication of what women will run off and buy in droves I should be able to come up with something. But I'd probably screw up the promo tours and talk shows,most women wouldnt like being called sheep and worst by the author of the book that theyre obsessed with. My daughter bought the whole set and my wife and a lot of women we know have read it,BAAAH.

 

It is terrible. Repetitive and poorly written. Pretty vanilla, too, at least by my standards. I expected far more action. I read all three books in the series to see what I was missing since it generated such a fuss (a friend shared them so it only cost my time). The second book was an improvement, though, that's not saying a lot.
