We have a day in NO before a cruise as well as two days after. Wondering what you all can recommend as far as things to see or do. I know all about the (amazing) food, the FQ, the zoo/aquarium and casinos. We will have a rental car. What else should we see or do? Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

It depends on what kind of things you enjoy. The WWII museum is really cool (on Julia in the warehouse district- walkable if you're fit-its like walking from the Wynn to The STRAT ). If you want to get out a bit, there's several plantations in the area that do tours. You can go on swamp tours that are just out past the airport area, and they're fun if you like outdoorsy stuff. (They are very safe...I took 19 squirmy kindergarteners on one of them!) If you're interested in more of a salt-of-the-earth experience, drive over to Chalmette/St. Benard and visit Rocky and Carlo's. Get the macaroni and cheese, and thank me later. City Park is also very nice, but its really just a park. For the shoppers, there's a lot of nice shopping on Magazine Street, but its more boutique style shops than big-box stores. There's the insectarium on Canal, but I'd only go there with kids. It just depends on what you're looking for. If you can give me some specifics, I'll gladly help...I lived in the area for about eight years, and in Orleans parish proper for three. I also have planned corporate events there and love to show off my adopted hometown! :)

Thank you Blue for your response.

I was last in NO in 1992, and I don't remember much from that trip. We're planning on doing some touristy stuff for sure. And we love to eat. The swamp tour sounds interesting. Basically we like different things, though we're not the "adventure" type.

Check out this thread from last month. Within it, there are lots of additional options offered, as well as my TR from February when I went to Mardi Gras.

On my first trip to New Orleans (1995, with my mom, for Jazz Fest:peace:) we did a walking tour of the Garden District. So gorgeous!

A quick search found an option here (DIY) http://www.frommers.com/destinations/neworleans/0020020034.html

I love the antique shops on Magazine! I also love cajun & xydeco music (took dance lessons in the mid-90s) and on one trip ~2000, I went dancing at Tipitina's Uptown.

Coops Place in the quarter was very good, I'm not usually a big fan of fried chicken, but theirs is mighty tasty. Coops had a duck quesadilla that was really special, I fell for shrimp creole and red beans and rice there too.

Cochon Butcher in the Warehouse District is very good, it was the duck pastrami that wowed us.

Elizabeth's in Bywater is a funky breakfast and lunch place. They have sinful praline bacon and delicious grits.

    All good eats for sure.

We took a swamp tour with Louisiana Tour Company, it was the highlight of our trip. I'm so glad we did it. I also really enjoyed the uptown neighborhood. I recommend the WWII museum too.

My brother used to live there, and on my last trip there he took us to Central Grocery for muffulettas. I have to be honest, it was a tad greasy for me, and I am not a huge Italian (pastrami, etc) meats lover, but that is just me. Judging by the line, I was probably the only one in town that didn't care for it. The place was packed.
