We have decided to take the trek to the grand canyon on this trip. Is there anything along the way that is worth stopping at or is it a 5 hour drive through barren desert?

which part are you going to North rim or south rim ? How much time are you allowing altogether ? I only know the south rim . If you are allowing only a day I would pack plenty of drinks and snacks and just concentrate on the Grand Canyon experience. I regret never been able to hike down into the canyon. Just remember easy down twice as hard back up.

We've driven to south rim twice

Dont remember anything but Hoover Dam,desert and the lovely town of Kingman AZ.
If youre doing a same day ride ,forget about stopping except for gas ,snacks and bathroom.
We usually do a two night stay in Flagstaff AZ which allows us a full day at the canyon and an afternoon at Sedona AZ. Key to our gameplan is we get moving early in am.

Are you talking about Alien Fresh Jerky? :alien1:
Yes, folks. This is a real place. http://www.alienfreshjerky.com/Default.asp

I've often thought about stopping there (just for the fun of it) before
continuing on our drive to Vegas. And then I thought...Nevermind.

Love the Jerky Shack, but it's the wrong direction. What about Lake Las Vegas? It does still exist. It's pretty quiet out there but still has plenty to do and see. Great little shops...if you didn't get enough shopping in Vegas, it's there too...rent boats and take them out on the lake... good little places with outdoor seating in a "village" type atmosphere. It's just a bit different from Vegas. Check it out.
