My trade show moves to the Rio this year a month earlier during January. I am monitoring the prices now that Southwest has extended their reservations and prices seem pretty high so far. I still prefer to stay downtown and commute to my trade show but I did check kayak.com for the Rio and Gold Coast. Rio was out of my range but Gold coast is much more reasonable and deserves further consideration. The BIG surprises were the Plaza and Gold Spike.

Last year I stayed at the Gold Spike in a Jackpot deal from Southwest Airlines. The year before I booked with Booking.com through Kayak. So far this year Gold Spike and the Plaza have been close in price through Kayak. I called the Plaza, and though she was a sweetheart, the lady in reservations kept putting me on hold, I guess to confer with someone. It seemed like it may have been her first day. First she said that I would need to call back next month that they didn't have January's rates yet; then I was put on hold and she returned with good news, they had the rates. They were slightly more than on kayak.com with friday, sat and sunday being 59.99 and the rest of th week 32.99. This was without tax and YES, the new resort fee. The big surprise was GOLD SPIKE. Prices on kayak.com ran about $397 with the 13% tax and resort fees for 8 nights. Not being able to get prices from their website, I called and got a price of $256.52 for 8 nights with tax and resort fee included. Wow, it pays to call reservations and I would have made reservations but I like to get my flight first. There in lies the problem.......high airfare. SWA doesnt seems to budge. With my luck they may drop but then perhaps the hotel will have gone up!

So just a reminder especially for the newbies, check packages and check booking separately, check search engines and call reservations. Check often and everywhere everyday........because you just never know!

    Hmmm.

Sure seems like you could do better by booking the Gold Coast & walking back and forth to the Rio
for your meetings ( very easy walk ).

Not sure where your gambling taste lies, but the video poker is good at the Gold Coast, and excellent
at the Palms, across the street.

Jimbo, I assumed you looked at the Rio rates under Total Rewards? I got my dates in January for $45/nt.

If you're on the Facebook, become friends with the Gold Spike and ask them for a better deal. I'd be willing to bet they give you one.

Try smartervegas.com for discount codes to use at Rio and other properties. They have a "Plan Ahead" discount and "Friends and Family" discount for all the Caesars properties. Way lower than anywhere else, but you've got to tinker around with both plans and each property individually, as well as changing the type of room choice for the best discount. I even found Imperial Palace rooms there for $18 a night in September.

I am familiar with all three of the hotels. I usually spend about 3 days at the show but much prefer to stay downtown and enjoy the "feel" of the area and the convenience of everything within a small area including restaurants, and the comradary of the crowd. Downtown is a great place to stay while it is still easy to access anywhere else for shopping, shows etc. It is like home in a stange city.

I see the problem, its smartervegas, not smartvegas. Once you sign up with them, you see even more deals (so-called "unlisted"), and you can get email updates as well.

Click on the link that Don fixed (thank you, Don). Down the left column is a list of hotels, sorted by strip and off-strip. Click on the name of the hotel you're interested in (Rio is in the off-strip list), and the page will change to all the available offers for that hotel. I see that Rio only has the Friends and Family promo right now, not the Plan Ahead offer. Click on "BOOK NOW", the green block within the description of the offer, and another window will open up, allowing you to reserve a room using that discount. Change the calendar in the center of the page to the month you are planning to stay, and all the rates for that month will appear. Then, if you want, you can change the room type to see if that discount can be used to other room types. When you're going to set up your reservation, you can then sign into Total Rewards (if you have an account) without having to start back at the beginning. It just returns you to where you already are. Very helpful.

BTW, if you want to look at the prices for a different hotel, don't select it from the Harrahs/CET dropdown. You won't get the same discount. Go all the way back to smartervegas.com and start over with a different hotel from the left column.
