It's a simple question, but , after 15+ trips to Vegas I'm not sure it really matters... Which leads me to the question. Would you rather win big and go home after 6 hours or have an enjoyable 3-4 days comfortably playing whenever and whatever within the budget you've set.

Now that i' m a bit older I want the latter, because it's more about the entertainment/fun/drunkeness of it all. I' ve had my share of winning and losing trips, but, the most enjoyable ones are where you can play any time , any game..... Yes even slots(in a drunken stupor(and only the star wars, monopoly, or hangover ones))

Winning is nice, but ultimately I'm there to play as an integral part of my Vegas vacation experience - so for me, the ideal situation is to be up big early in a trip - that way I can play as much as I want the rest of the trip & not have to worry about going on a long losing streak. Winning is gravy, but playing as much as possible and leaving even [or down as little as possible] is my real "goal".

If I won big the first day & then didn't gamble the rest of the week just to lock in the win, it would defeat the purpose of why I'm in Vegas to begin with.

That being said, if I go to Atlantic City, the goal is different - since it's a "day trip" destination for me, the goal becomes more about the win than just the sheer activity & enjoyment of gambling - so ideally I'll hit big in a relatively short period of time, and if I do I then have no problem just walking away from the tables to have dinner & then head home, since I'm not spending my whole vacation there.

Yes I can say I want to win but to win by playing correctly in baccarat. Have a profit target and in many cases when I hit 80% of that profit target I stop playing all together or if I do I play small bets to pay for food. If things don't go my way I immediately stop for 12 hours and then continue on the next day. I hit the movie theater, roam around Vegas or I just head back to my hotel room and catch some rest.

I'm definitely built from same mold as Jilly, DM - I wish I had the discipline to stop for 12 hrs. I think the most I could is 4, of course while i'm sleeping.

I don't have the gambler's mentality (which I respect) to put emphasis on winning. I'm there for entertainment, though I don't pursue the entertainment "at all costs". I know when to shut it down.

Same here. If I won something significant, I'd lock the majority of it up, use the rest of it to pad my bankroll and head back into the fray.

    arukc,

Well it wasn't something developed overnight I can tell you that. Plus there is so much to do and see in Vegas so that helps immensely. Plus when you book a three/four day trip you are in no rush to win so you can grind things back.

I'm with Jilly...we go to Las Vegas to "vacation" not just to win. We do pool time everyday, eat great dinners and gamble for fun. We gamble quite a bit and if we break even or a little down, that's a great trip. When you have one of those big winning trips, it just fills the coffers for future trips and if you lose all of your budget...it's always still a fun trip...just one w/ a little sting in it:poke:

Yes, I really want to win.

Every bet I make is with the intent to win. It's part of my gambling entertainment.

Winning, managing bankroll, setting win/loss limits, surviving losing streaks, struggling to minimize bankroll losses, all of this is part of my fun when I'm gambling in Vegas.

Even when I hit it big in the beginning of the trip it's always gamble to win, to the very last day. Might not turn out very well, but hey, it's why I'm in Vegas!

I just dont have that gambling drive either. I think about Vegas quite a bit, but "hitting the big one" rarely enters my thoughts. I play enough to get room COMPS, which is not much a CET props, and that is it. Most of my time/money/energy is spent on concerts, shows and dinners and drinking.

i'm there to gamble, but with the ultimate goal of winning. i just enjoy the atmosphere and adrenaline rush of playing and so i probably play longer hours than i really should. but at the same time i hate winning early and giving it back, so it's a balancing act.

I have my budget and that's that. Im there to play, not to make money. Trying to time things in perfectly random games is silly. My only goal is to make bet sizes that give me the best chance of my budget lasting the entire trip.

The mood of a trip is often determined by whether you are winning or losing and the extent of that win or loss is ultimately going to determine what you do. If you lose 50% of your bankroll on day one you aren't going to be too happy and most logical people will take a break from gambling for the rest of the day. On the other end of the spectrum if you are up 50% you are likely to start thinking of setting a floor for yourself and getting into a bankroll conservation mode. Sure you might play some larger than normal bets here and there that you wouldn't normally play just because you're up, but the guy down 50% might try a few big bets himself in hopes of getting himself back even.

If you're closer to the middle of the spectrum you will play closer to how you normally play. Someone up 5% is probably going to feel about the same as someone down 5%...at no point will he say ok I'm done gambling.

I think 95% of the time if the average person doubles their bankroll early they won't immediately stop gambling but will put X amount in the safe and play with the winnings...that way if they lose then at least they are still up or close to it...and if they win, well that's even better.

That being said, it really depends on the person and also how often they visit Vegas. I live in CA so it's a 4 hour drive...I know if I cut my gambling early (has never happened) or scale it back that it isn't that big of a deal because I'll probably be back in 2-3 months. If someone is flying across the country or internationally to get there and they only go once a year at most if they are lucky then they will probably have a tougher time cutting out gambling completely if they are up.

If by big you mean a mega jackpot i would be more than ok shutting it down or even flying back home after 6 hours if i had a win over 100 000 $

I'm there to play but I'd much rather win than lose. I guess ideally if I can't win all the time, I'd like to stay even the first part of the trip and then win big the last day so I can keep some of my money.

    Define "big."

We live close enough that our trips aren't that special or rare (usually). So I wouldn't mind a bit if we hit it big right off the bat and decided to head home rather than staying the whole time.

eta: The wife rather strongly disagrees with the above. Her response to the question was "Whee! Now we have more to play with, and they'll give us a better room! And dinner is Sinatra, not Grimaldi's." :D

I think for many people, the amount of distance involved + planned length of stay likely influences the "goal" of the trip - so just as I'd be more likely to leave if up when playing in AC a few hours drive from my house, so is someone from SoCal, etc. more likely to leave Vegas early after a big win vs. someone who's flown in from across the country or overseas would be.

And just to clarify - it's not that I don't ideally want to win in Vegas - its just that I'm far less likely to stop playing on day one of a week-long vacation five-and-a-half hours flying time from home than I would be winning the same amount on a day/evening trip to a casino that is a few hours drive from home.

I originally saw this thread and thought "what a stupid question" . But the more I thought about it, it is a great question with some not so obvious answers.

I will have a good time even if I lose. I consider my gambling losses as just part of the cost of the vacation.

If I win I will have a much better time because a) I will be able to play more. b) it is like I had a great trip for a bargain price.

Another way to look at it. If I am on a cruise vacation, I am willing to pay the price and I will enjoy myself. But if halfway through the cruise, someone comes up to me and says "Guess what, we are going to refund half of what you paid for your trip" I will enjoy myself a little bit more - maybe do some extra stuff, buy some extra souvenieirs, or know I am already halfway to saving up for my next trip.

I also think there is a huge difference between packing up and going home with your winnings after being there for only a short period of time on your first day and throwing it all in the safe and enjoying the rest of your trip with the countless other things to do. I don't know about you but if I won a good amount of money then went straight home my first thought when I get home would be "I really want to go to Vegas"

That raises another point - there's so many other things to blow your money on in Vegas besides gambling [shopping, dining, clubs, strippers & blow, etc.] just stopping gambling but not leaving town could still make going home a winner a challenge LOL
