Let's say I have a pass line bet of $3 and the rolled point is a 9. Can I put $2 for my odds bet? Assume table min is $3.

That is fine - just needs to be an even number on the 5/9 (as they pay 3:2 with these points hit). I've never had a crew tell me I couldn't play less odds than my pass line bet (although you may be wise to put more down than that).

The "table min" deals with the total amt you have on the table. So on a $3 min table you couldn't just walk up with no pass line bet and put $1 on hard-8. But you could put $1 on all four of the hardway bets with no other bets, since you have at least $3 in play.

Most casinos (probably all) do not care about the odds bet since it is an even money bet. Their only concern is to place the correct number of chips for the correct pay off.

The table minimum applies to your pass, come, field or place bets. The bet cannot be lower than the table minimum. On the hardways, you may place a bet below the table minimum.

Actually I think you are able to put $1 on a hard way number. You don't have to play all the numbers to make any minimums for the hard ways. I've put $1 on 1 hard way number without any problem, never had a problem with $1 bet on the hard ways. I also put $1 each on the c/e on the come out roll so I doubt you need a minimum for the hard ways.

as for putting $2 for odds when the minimum is $3, I am not sure as I usually play the minimum bet so I would usually put down $4 when I have $3 on the pass.

I played at $10 table in Tahoe and they had no problem letting me bet $1 at a time on the prop bets. I didn't have any pass line bets down. I don't play $10 tables but my buddy was playing so I just hung out and plunked a buck down on the Yo each time or a couple bucks on a hardway. I ended making enough to start playing the pass line.

If you want to throw the dice then you have to bet the min. I think.

I believe you have to play the pass line if you want to throw 'em. You don't have to play odds behind, but why would't you?

BlondWidow is right -- to shoot, you must bet the pass (or don't pass) line.

I meant if you have no other bets on the table, you can't ONLY play a $1 hardway... if the table min is $3 or $5. But if you wanted to play $5 on one hardway, that will fly.

As long as the total you have down on the table is at least the table min bet.

I tried to take $6 odds on a 5 and 9 and $10 odds on a 6 and 8 at a $15 min table a couple of different times and was told my odds had to be table min. Maybe it just depends on the dealer.

As tokyo said, he wasn't playing anything, just putting down $1 bets with no problem. I also have just put down $1 bets on the hard ways without playing anything else. Sometimes I don't like a shooter and won't play any bets, just put down a hard ways once and a while. never had a problem.

TRN, you should probably explain where you had a problem with $1 bets, like you tried it at so and so casino but they told you that you had to have the minimums on the table or something. I think you are making untrue statements, you sound like you are making an assumption from one casino rather than based on general facts for all casinos

I have never had a problem with putting just a $1 bet on the hard ways without playing any other bets.

If anyone else had a problem with putting just a $1 bet down on the hard ways, please post. So far only TRN has ever experienced a problem with $1 bets.

Just playing a $1 hardway and nothing else is probably always acceptable. A little like baccarat, there is no requirement that you make any bet at all on every roll/hand just because you are standing there, so they don't mind you 'sitting out' and just playing a few prop bets only. I doubt you could do this for hours on end, however.

My experience is that the odds have to be at least the table minimum, but I'm sure it's variable from table to table.

If I'm wrong I apologize... I've been told in 2 different Vegas casinos, my total $ on the table, across all bets, must meet the minimum... so I could do five $1 bets on a $5 min table (if I don't want $5 on a pass line), etc. If this isn't the case, I believe you, not trying to start anything :)

Not trying to start anything (peace!) but you may be correct to a point. I'm not sure if it will be okay for someone to just come up and only play $1 bets (as wade said) that don't add up to the minimums the whole night but I've never did that. If I'm at the table I usually put a bet down on the pass line and odds once and a while. If anything I would vary my bets depending on the shooter. Some shooters irk me, taking forever or whipping the dice down so hard that we have to take cover for fear of getting hit in the eye. With those shooters I just put down a bet or a don't bet and hope that the guy craps out so the next guy can throw the dice. Of course if the shooter is throwing good numbers for a long time then he can do whatever he wants and take as long as he wants.

Anyway we should probably end this conversation to say that while a $1 bet can be made on a hard way, c/e or other middle bet, most of us usually make those bets in conjunction with other bets (like the pass or come or place bets) that do amount to the minimum bets. It will be up to the casino to tell the customer if his bets need to amount to the minimum.

Placing a number and a pass line (or don't pass) or come bets (or don't come) must be at the table minimum or more. "Center bets" can be as low as the table has chips (usually $1...some casinos have $.50 chips or even $.25).
Odds can be less than the table minimum.

I have been in casinos in 6 different states and on cruise ships and this is true everywhere I have played.

I've seen it both ways. I've also seen them ask for an odds bet to be at least equal to the table minimum, although this makes little sense as the free odds bet doesn't affect the house take one bit. I guess they just don't want low rollers on a higher limit table.

I've been asked to put down a bet equal to the table minimum, either a place, line, or field bet to make a hard way or proposition bet. Other times I've thrown a yo bet over the crowd as a wadded up bill and had it played for me and hit.

I think it just depends on the casino or the dealers mood.

Seems like sometimes they just like to mess with you. Maybe they are bored. When they do, that's when I stop tipping and soon leave. Part of the fun of the game at least to me is having a good crew.

I look for a happy crew as much as a hot table.
