"Strip" stayer forced to stay downtown, Help!

When will this myth ever die? LV is a big city and like all big cities, you need to be vigilent but I have walked all over Fremont street, Ogden, LV Blvd, around the gold spike, EC in the mornings, wee early hours, at night and never felt any less safe than stepping off of the Strip. Definitely, have seem more drunks, unconscious people, pan handlers, porn slappers, and rude beggars on the Strip especially at the bus stops, and sidewalk overpasses than anywhere downtown. There are metro police, marshalls, and tons of security on foot and on bakes as well as cruisers everywhere.

Another myth that won't die! Downtown isn't "slummin". It's a different experience from the Strip.

 

I agree. With all the panhandlers and lack of security in the outdoor spaces, the Strip is becoming more seedy than downtown in plenty of ways. Fremont and the side streets are always in view of police and security, and if there was danger, an interior escape is only a few steps away. You can't say that about the Strip.

 

I'm looking forward to this year more than any other trip to Vegas even though I'm prob gonna have a more awkward time than before because I can't walk anywhere.

I've always stayed on the strip every year since 2008 bar 3/4 days last year I spent at the Nugget playing a couple poker tournaments there and Binions.

I didn't spend a lot of time there, but what I did spend around Fremont I enjoyed and this year I'm booked in for 9 days downtown. 6 friends from the UK who are out the same time have all booked in as well, I'm really looking forward to a more sedate trip than years gone by and hopefully a profitable one as I intend to play some poker this year!!

That will most likely revert to the normal levels of debauchery when I head back to the strip for the last week though :evillaugh

Lots of new restaurants to discover and plenty of new bars to sample the wares in. All in just over a month now, the next 5 weeks at work cannot go fast enough

good free entertainment,good food,clean rooms etc etc.

oh yes, a few bums! like there are none of those on the strip. lol

If that is slummin then bring it on!

shhh...if you keep fighting this Myth, people will show up in droves! Then you can say Hello to MR 6/5blackjack and $20/hand table games. Keep DT cloaked in a dark, unknown mist....it keeps the struting peacocks out!

 

Well we leave this Thursday for the Fremont for 3 fun nights. I am pretty excited about staying this trip downtown. Its been a long time and with what I have been reading on this site, I think it will be a great time by all.

Have a blast. While my daily budget is typically about half of yours, I play very much the same games. I am a big downtown fan, and on trips when I am with my wife, we stay at the nugget. At your levels, you will get treated very well there, and I would guess they can find you a table in the book, which is quite nice. If you are looking for a little change of scenery, I end up spending most of my time at Benny's Bullpen, in the back of Binions. They have nice seating if you get one of the premium spots, enough good tv's to meet your requirements, and the betting windows for the book are right outside the door.

 

With that great attitude, you are guaranteed to have a great, fun, and wonderful trip!

 

Glad this has been bumped, I can add my experience of Downtown to it from 2 weeks at the Nugget this year. I was in the Rush Tower, originally for 10 nights and I ended up staying 14, even though I had a room at the Palazzo already paid for.

I had the best time I've ever had in Vegas staying at the Nugget and will be staying there every year from now on. The people are much more friendly than at the Palazzo/Wynn where I normally stay and the whole atmosphere is so much more laid back.

The restaurants in the Nugget are all decent, although they don't quite match up to the top tier places on the strip, on the whole they are very good and Vic & Anthony's was excellent!

I can't wait to get back there so I can go on what is like a british pub crawl along Fremont again on my scooter

 

Used to stay at Main Street Station in the past but have stayed on the strip for the last 10 years. Went for a boys trip last weekend and stayed at MSS. It was nice but I felt like it was slumming it once I left MSS. Sorry but it is not the same and the gaming while a lower minimum was worst than the strip. Never want to stay downtown again too many lowlifes and bums and bad odds. I guess to each his own.

 

Funny, I avoid the strip for those same reasons.

I prefer downtown for a lot of reasons, but like to get a Strip fix in on every trip. At least for one afternoon.

I've seen plenty of lowlifes in both places, but have felt safer walking around at night in LV than any other major US city. Tons of police and security. And drunken tourists that you can just blow over, they're so unsteady on their feet.

Like another commenter said, check out Vic & Anthony's Steakhouse at Golden Nugget. Hands down my fave steakhouse and I never leave Vegas without having at least one meal there. Sometimes more.

The BJ did not have good rules and man one of the pit critters was sweat it and kept bugging me about where I placed the dealers tip on the table. Even the video BJ at MSS I could not split, double down on anything. Even the strip allows that again on a machine. That is what I mean. Also I found out it was bike fest that weekend so maybe a lot more rowdy sort of crowd than normal. Made everything feel crowded.

 

I would agree with this assesment. I am a big downtown guy and disagree with the viewpoint downtown has bad odds compared with the strip. And downtown has MUCH lower minimums for the most part then the strip.
