Q for the ladies re:packing

We leave in a week and I'm starting to pack for this trip. I have never been to Vegas, what would you typically wear at night? I have packed few little black dresses to wear out for dinner, a club or show. Do I need to bring a cover up or light jacket for my strapless outfits? I really do not what to overpack. Limiting our luggage to two carry ons for four days.

My dh is taking one pair of jeans, dress pants and the rest is shorts.

Should I even bother with a pair of jeans or jean capris? Will it be too hot?

i think the biggest mistake people make when going to Vegas is thinking you're going to be hot. even in the dead of summer you're much more likely to be too cold than too hot. that's because even though it may be 110 degrees outside, when you'e inside (as you are most of the time) the AC is cranked down and it's 70 degrees.

so you'll definitely want some type of cover for a strapless dress as dinner/clubs/shows are all inside where it's 70 degrees.

so as far as your husband goes, personally i don't bring any shorts to Vegas except for golf. inside the casino i always want long pants and shoes and usually a long sleeve shirt/light jacket as well. i'm almost never too hot at night with long pants, long sleeve button down and a sportcoat.

first trip ever i brought nothing but shorts, sandals and no jacket because the weather said 95 and the first night i had to go buy new clothes because i was freezing inside.

 

We've gone in mid July a couple of times when it is 110+ during the day and at night it only cools down to 100-105... even then my wife still packs along a cape and a Pashmina for in the casinos at night.

Most of the time I just do shorts and t-shirts at night, if I get to feeling too chilly I just need to step outside for 5 minutes.

One thing with packing too is to consider how often you are going to be back at your hotel room. Pretty common for people to want to pack a day and night wardrobe for each day of the trip but then when you get there, with so much to see and do, it can be pretty easy to spend the whole day out and about and not go back to the hotel room at night to change.

 

Definitely bring some sort of lightweight cover-up. I wouldn't do jeans, but do you have some lighter-weight pants or capris, like khakis?

I leave on Sunday and noticed the temps in Vegas next week will be in the mid 30's (Celcius, that is lol ) or into the 90s ......

I'm bringing mostly shorts or capris but will bring a light sweater as yes , with the A/C cranked up the casinos can get cool ....

It's a very dry heat too , more so than on the prairies, so remember to keep yourself well hydrated with water! as you will be doing a lot of walking around ......n bring comfy comfy shoes

Your from California right? 70 degrees is a warm day to me

 

I think shifter’s from the southeast (?), where there is stifling humidity to go along with oppressive heat. So, it would be logical to think that he can handle hot weather better than most and is bothered by chilly temps more than most. I did chuckle a little though at “A/C cranked DOWN to 70”. 70 is pretty darn warm to me too.

Personally, I don’t think I’ve been anything close to cold in the casinos during the summer time. If it wasn’t for the fact that I like to have a few nice meals, nothing but shorts would be in my luggage from March – October.

But, I’ve never met a woman who wasn’t always cold. So, to the OP, I would definitely pack something to put on over sleeveless dresses etc.

 

Agree 110% here! Even in the summer, I always wear or carry a big shirt for just that. 90% of the time you're going to be either in an air-conditioned building or an air-conditioned car. If you get too warm, just take it off and carry it, or (tacky I admit) tie it around your waist.

I haven't really dressed up in Las Vegas lately. The older I get, the more casual I've become. I guess I've become the stereotypical middle-age tourista.

The past few times I remember dressing up-up in Las Vegas once I wore an on-the-shoulder long dress, and also a spaghetti-strap dress with a silver bolero as a cover-up, which worked quite well.

Those I hang out with have become increasingly casual too.

Do bring shoes that you will be comfortable in, even for the evening. If you're going to dress up, I might suggest dressier flats rather than heels, as you WILL be doing quite a bit of walking in Las Vegas.

 

Have you met any older women, say, ones going through menopause? I'm not (I'm 39) but my husband fears those days, as I am always warm. With the way the casinos are air conditioned, I'm usually warmer in a casino when I visit in February (which sucks in its own way) My always cold husband and I have reached detente over the HVAC controls in our house - 68 in the winter and 77 in the summer. So yes, 70 would freeze both of us. But you can always put more clothing on if you're cold. You can't ever get more than "naked" when you're warm.....

 

Guess I just end up with the frigid ones. Could explain why I’m still single, I suppose…:wink

I think I'll just go with that explaination from now on.

Back to OP, my wife has to have a cover up when inside in summer. It goes on and off throughout the course of our gambling session, even in the same casino. 70 degrees and 10% humidity is very cold to both of us. At the Vegas house, we never went below 76 degrees on the AC.

 

70 is 21 celius, so that's nice and warm for us. I think I'll only bring one thin wrap to cover up with.

Part of the issue (for summer travel at least) is the huge difference between outside and inside. Even if you are comfortable at 70, if you've just spent 10 minutes walking outside in 110 degrees, that 70 is a HUGE shock of cold to your system.

I can walk around in 55 (F) in a sleeveless top and be fine - I did this morning. But I get cold sitting in a 70 Vegas casino. Go figure. It's not logical. Just be prepared - so you don't have to run to the drugstore to buy a sweatshirt

 

Yeah 70 is totally fine outside, but inside in AC that can feel pretty chilly to me. And honestly they probably crank it down much lower.

 

I keep telling my husband I need to bring my thermometer from my ski jacket in the casino to track the temps If anyone actually has a thermometer on their person next time they're in a casino, please post so I can start collecting data

I'm a husband and I have absolutely no idea what a pashmina is. I've never even heard of it before!

 

My husband knows what it is because I had to share mine with him when we saw Mamma Mia at MBay a few years ago - it was SOOOOO cold in that theater. Hubby had on khakis and a short sleeve shirt and I had to wrap my pashmina around both of us to keep him from shivering.....

 

Its a cashmere and silk scarf/shawl. Though they are a light fabric, they can provide a fair bit of warmth.

There are quite a few large Indian and Pakistani communities out here and at our local big shopping mall there are a few stores that carry pashminas and even two or three that are nothing but.

When my wife was a restaurant manager she had a few employees who would go to Pakistan to see family and they would bring her back some real nice ones.
