My wife and I have worked our way up to playing craps (don't play at the same table at the same time). We are basic players playing pass line and odds and maybe one come bet. We just returned from Encore and enjoyed playing there. They knew we were fairly new at it and were very helpful while we played...answered questions, help us with bets and kept an eye on us. They were all very nice and made it enjoyable.
    Questions are...
~Is it better to play just one bet with max odds than to play a bet with min. odds and a come bets with min odds out there at the same time? We are not high rollers so we don't put tons of money out there.
~we are a little confused on max odds bets and we should have inquired more at Encore because I'm sure they would have told us what we needed but felt intimidated a little to ask with what was all going on around. We would put $10 on pass line, then $20 on odds and then repeat for a come bet. So, what would we put for max odds after point was made? I remember them saying 3x, 4x, 5x based on the point 4,5,6,8,9,10
Also, there has been mention of table size on other posts. Does it make a difference in how dice roll?
    Thanks in advance

    3x4x5x...

3x refers to the max odds bet on the 4/10 (If you have $10 on the line, you can max at $30 odds)

4x refers to the max odds bet on the 5/9 ($10 bet and make $40 odds)

5x refers to the 6/8 ($10 bet and make $50 odds)

The cool part is that if your point hits, you'd be paid $10 on the pass line and $60 on the odds. Makes it easy to know if you're being paid right.

I know all the odds experts will kill me here, but i play the pass with the full back odds, place 2 numbers (5 or 9) and 6 or 8 which ever isnt the point. That fairly good for basics.
If ya want i can complicate things for ya with other stuffI do if ya want!! ( LOL).
If i play dont....usually the pass and place against the 4 or 10 ( just 1 number) if not the point.

Big difference between playing Pass line with Max odds or Playing Pass line with less odds and a come with odds is that in the second You have more numbers working for you.

I generally do not get to max odds until the table heats up - I prefer a pass line with 2x odds and add the 6/8 working for me too.

The best is to do what you most enjoy doing... and to always ask questions without any fears. Its your money and its the dealers job to help you.

In theory its best to have as much of your money on an odds bet as allowed but only the mathematical purists really care about such things. Unless you are playing at high limits it makes little difference. At ten and twenty dollar flat bets on the line, your odds can be whatever you choose because the difference between 1x and the full "x" allowed just isn't all that much.

I usually do one line bet and two come bets... but for some that is too much action to pay attention to. Some people choose to take a slightly lower payout and do place bets, particularly on the Six and Eight.

Its whatever convenient and fun for you... but always ask questions.

FoolsGold...when we passed through Riviera, we came across a $5 table & my wife played. She did what you just mentioned. She would play the pass line and two come bets with $10 odds on each. It seemed less boring watching three bets out there than just one. Then a hot roller came up and made it even more fun ~ walked out with $170.

When youz start to get a little more comfortable with the game, bet the hardways. When those start to hit, it is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

There is almost an unlimited number of ways to play (which is one reason craps is so fun) and a lot has to do with your betting style and personal preference.

You will be getting a wide range or replies.

I for one don't do the Come bet as I like to have control over all my bets (expect the pass line of course) and can take down and move around as I feel fit.

Many people when starting out will play the pass with odds and 1 or 2 side bets likes the 6 & 8 and expand from there as experience is obtained. The more you play you will start to find which bets fit your style of play.

There is no right way to bet. It depends on your own style, your own objective when playing.

Yes the passline with max odds are your best bet. Come bets with max odds are just as good. These bets are mathematically better than place bets and much better mathematically than any of the bets in the center of the table

    However,

I play craps a lot. I enjoy the game and the action. I typically buy in for maybe $300 a session. I almost never play maore than 1 times odds. Here is why:

If I were to play only one pass line bet with full odds, it would take $40 to $60 per shooter. I would be standing at the table with only one bet in play. I could be standing a long time with nothing coming my way.
Instead, i will take that $50 and play pass line with single odds and then place 3 numbers with a $10 bet each. I now have 4 numbers in play. After a couple of them hit, I increase my bet with each win. It is a much more exciting way to play the game.

When a table heats up and it looks like the shooter is on a roll, I may place a fourth number. After collecting several winners, I may also start increasing my odds a bit.

As for the bets in the center - hardways and others - consider them like candy. A small piece every now and then can be nice and won't kill you. But if you have too steady of a diet on them they will kill you.

    risk factor

The more you put behind the line the lower the house edge. It's easy to google the percentages, double odds behind the line in addition to your pass line bet reduces the house edge to approx .61% The more odds multiples you put behind the line the lower the house edge combination figure.

Many casinos now offer 3X,4X,and 5X odds limits. I won't go into detail but the dealers will gladly explain on which numbers to bet the correct maximum allowable free odds to achieve the minimum house edge. They use a simple formula for the payoffs.

The most important thing to remember, at least for me is the risk factor of losing a sizable amount of your bankroll on a minimum number of plays. By taking maximum allowable odds on all numbers rolled during a shooters pass you run the risk of a 7 out and losing all of your bets, pass line, odds, and place bets as well. That hurts when it's a big figure.

So, whether you choose to play one number with 5X odds or two numbers, one with 2X odds and one with 3X odds or more is entirely up to you.

Remember the 7 will appear more often than any other number so keep that in mind, you're stretching out the time frame as far as the sheer number of rolls necessary to hit your numbers by taking multiple numbers rather than the highest maximum allowable odds on any given number and standing on that until a decision is reached either by hitting your number or a 7 is rolled and you lose it all.

It might not be as fun to play the single number with maximum odds but it will be a slightly better bet with less risk.

Many players will advise you to take maximum odds on every number to minimize the house advantage but it's not their money. I advise to keep it more conservative until you know you are on a winning streak to beat the band and then you can go all out, just pocket some profit BEFORE you get too cavalier. There's nothing worse that being way up only to lose it all back and then some.

Bottom line is you are there to win. Play it smart and win you will!
