A few years ago there used to be a guy named Micky or Mikey from TN who was a dealer from TN that was on the boards all the time talking about his work and his over eating of Vegas gourmet food during March madness. What happened to him? Just curious...have not seen any post from him in a while. thanks, Golf Caddy 1

Mikey was one of the first 1,000 members of travel2vegas and one of the handful of attendees at the first March Madness put on by the board. A couple years or so after joining this message board, he followed his dreams to Vegas where he became a dealer and a man-about-town.
The guy had a knack for writing and many of us enjoyed his humorous take on life inside Sin City. He was quite the prolific poster.
Vegas burnout led him back to family in Tennessee. Serious health issues (Mikey was a big man) soon ensued.

I remember that name and his posts really well. When he posted a trip report, it was read by 99% of the board members. He defended the Las Vegas life style better than the state's govenor. He also thought tourisum would recover quickly when the economy softened. But I think he had to find another dealers job because of cut backs at the casino he worked for. He had a another young board member he travel with to Las Vegas a lot. I'm trying to pull his name out from my poor memory, but just can't. Anyone help me there?

Mikey also has a blog that I will sometimes go to and see if there is anything new however it doesn't seem that he has gotten around to posting since last November. Sure miss him, his posts were the reason I became a member here. I would literally print out his trip reports and read them on the plane on the way to Vegas!

They didn't travel to Vegas together - just happened to be living there and posting about their experiences at the same time.

And they shared a house for a bit if memory serves me right. One of my favorite nights in Vegas was meeting up with the early T2V crew at (I believe) MM2. Had a great time at Barbary Coast and surrounding properties! There are pictures from that night on here somewhere!

I was wondering about him, too, and hope he is now well.

How do you know what member # you are? Not sure how long the board has been around, but I've been a member for 10 years now :)

(Posting this from McCarran on my way home to Denver, BTW.)

You could bring up the member list and sort by join date.

Thanks Sonya. I just learned something new. I am member #4131. I think I'll play that on our Big 4 lottery tonight.

I too, miss Mikey and his brilliant commentary! Fun stuff!

Thank you all for thinkin' about me

... I'm alive and doing fine!

JimBucc sent me a message this past week via facebook that folks were asking about me, so I'm here to check in and say hello.

    So here's what's been happening:

Yep, in 2010, the economy in Vegas was still in the shiatter, and even though I didn't have a permanent job any longer by the time that summer rolled around, I was working 12-16 hour days at two jobs during the World Series. I dealt tournaments during the day at the Golden Nugget, and cash games at night at Bally's.

I thought I'd love the Nugget, but it was kind of a pain in the ass and the money wasn't that great. I was apprehensive about Bally's, but it was a great experience all around and the money was fantastic. I'd go back to work there again in a minute if I had the chance.

Anyhow, once those two jobs dried up, I decided to wrap up my five-and-a-half year Vegas experience and move back to Tennessee. I figured that if I had to have a crummy job, I might as well have a crummy job that gave me weekends and holidays off. Besides, those of you who know me know that I come from a very close-knit family, and I wanted to be back near them. I had missed out on way too much over the years between living in Phoenix and Vegas, and I felt I should be back in Nashville.

Unfortunately, less than two weeks after I got back, I was floored by a pulmonary embolism (the same thing that got Captain Phil, for those Deadliest Catch fans out there). I had a blood clot form in my leg, it grew to the size of a fist, and passed through my heart.

Damn near killed me. I got to the hospital just in time, but the first hospital, once they diagnosed me properly, couldn't do a thing for me. An emergency ambulance ride to Vanderbilt Medical Center followed, but then the surgeon told me to bring in the whole family to say goodbye--they were going to operate, but my particular situation had about a 98% mortality rate.

That clot had lodged itself where the artery splits between the lungs, blocking both. They called it a 'saddle embolism' and basically, nobody comes back from that.

Anyhow, they cut me open, fished it out, and sewed me back up, and somehow I survived the entire process and managed to wake up the next day. I have three scars on my abdomen now, one huge one and two smaller ones to show for it, but after eight days in the ICU, I got wheeled out of there and sent home. The next several months were very difficult for me because it took a long time to rehab and I had twice weekly follow-up visits.

Finally in February of last year, I went back to work full-time, taking the first job I could get. The pay is decent, but not anything close to what I was making in Vegas, nor is my life in the cube farm near as interesting as it was in the casino.

On the other hand, they did give me excellent benefits, which helped me make a 100% complete recovery. So life is pretty good these days and I certainly appreciate it more after what I went through.

As far as Vegas goes, for a long time, I was completely over it. Having lived there for so long and seen the other side of it every day, I felt that enough was enough and the shine had come off the diamond. Even during March Madness of 2011, I had no desire to be there. This year, however, I began to feel a little 'homesick'. My schedule won't allow me to go back for several months, but some of my old Phoenix buddies have something cooking for later on in the year, and of course I'd write a full-length overly-detailed 20-printed pages report for y'all once I get back. But nothing is finalized yet. Still trying to wrap my head, and my wallet, around the $470 round-trip flights...:grrr:

Anyhow, it's nice to know that folks still care and wonder about me--I *do* appreciate it. I've just been a stranger here because for a long time I just didn't care anymore about new restaurants and clubs in our favorite city. And having had no plans to return, these forums fell out of my daily internet rotation a long time ago.

But as they say, you can take the boy out of Vegas, but you can't take Vegas out of the boy. When I go back, y'all will all be sure to know about it.

    Mikey

I don't know you personally, Mike, but I'm sure glad you are doing so well! I always enjoyed your posts and insights. You are a walking miracle, it seems, and what a gift that is. Best of luck to you, and I hope when you do return to LV, you have a great trip.
