If I had a million dollars, I'd be rich!

A real true gambler does not get rich off a million dollars, for there's now more fodder for their hobby.

What do you think of that statement?

I'm confused. Sarcasm? Is this in reference to the "real" gambler?

 

As for the original question... a mix of agree/disagree. I think the responsible majority would address any pressing personal financial matters along with investing/saving as appropriate for their particular situation BUT hopefully also enjoy a portion of the windfall however it pleases them - Vegas, gambling, etc. For those with a real addiction, no doubt problems lie ahead as you so often hear about lottery winners etc.

Well, I guess it depends on the drive (motive) behind the gambling.

For me, when I think of a "true" gambler it's tied to sportsmanship. The object is not to get rich, it's to play the game. Now, of course, the sportsman strives to win - that's part of the competitive nature of it all. And, he or she would not turn down riches, but the playing of "games of chance" is enjoyable in itself with or without financial rewards.

But you are assuming that "real true gambler" automatically means risking more as the bank account expands. Can't someone be a "real true gambler" and plink away at quarter VP?

Thats what I was going to say...

A million dollars is a lot of money to retire on, but if you are in your 20s-40s you aren't "rich" to the point where you can think about retiring and living it up for the rest of your life.

 

Whats a fodder?

Mother's day is right around the corner, but fodder's day is further away.

 

Hmmmm....maybe.
These days "retirement" starting at age 60 or 65 can easily last 20 or 30 years. Invested wisely, you would be lucky to be able to spend $70,000 per year.

Now $70,000 is a nice chunk of change, but it is not the lifestyle of the rich and famous. Inflation will make that worth less and less and - if like most people - you have two people living off of the family income, you would be lucky to be considered middle class.

 

YEP...

Though don't forget that (by certain definitions nowadays) those earning $250K+/yr are "wealthy"!

It's all totally relative though -- some people can make due with very little, and others go broke earning $1M+/yr!!

 

A million bucks ain't what it used to be. These days it'd buy you a fairly spartan but sustainable retirement.

Two would be comfy and four gets closer to my definition of rich.

I figure you can count on 3% yields , 4% tops after inflation.

 

Pentamillionaire and above, that starts to sound like enough to make one think of a reasonably comfortable retirement!

We shall see. Im saving like a mofo but Im going to need some cooperation from the economy to get there. 10 years down 35 to go, lol.
