A valid point, LV. However, when you made it, you failed to use the word 'shithole', and so your version was merely snippy (through a nice use of 'adequate bankroll') instead of outright insulting.

OK, I'd be willing to go with "a sufficiently large bankroll." That is, sufficiently large to allow consideration of other alternatives. That kind of freedom is what attracts many people to Vegas in the first place.

I'm sorry to hear you consider downtown as a shithole. It is very enjoyable for some people like me.

Choosing to stay downtown doesn't have anything to do with my bankroll. I go to LV to gamble and wherever I stay I have an "adequate" bankroll.

I CHOOSE downtown because I like to casino hop. If I'm not having any luck at one then I'll move on to another. If my husband is enjoying his craps game at the Golden Nugget I can easily walk over LVC to checkout my favorite slots or to the Fremont for some blackjack.

Downtown casinos - I can tell my friend I'll meet up with in the next casino, look for me at the $1 slots, but you can't do that with casinos on the Strip.

This trip my husband and I are going to LV as invited guests (by my employer.) We're staying at the Venetian. Even going with a "adequate bankroll" for the Venetian, I'm so looking forward to the downtown enviroment!

Delmonico's is GREAT!! Just a suggestion, if you liked Delmonico's, try N9ne at the Palms then a drink at Ghostbar!

Gotta agree with HM, I have just discovered the downtown, I like it, I wish I would have found out about it years ago, but different strokes for different folks. Eating to me isn't that big a deal, we all have to do it, Be it fancy or not. E likes the fancy stuff, we may not. I myself aren't too impressed with all his "reveiws" of the high end places.....I like a good buffet....It is tiring, all this fancy pants eating experiences, and if a lot of us cared. I go to Vegas to have fun, and enjoy the aura that Vegas provides. I do eat when I go there, but it isn't the reasion for going....Sounds like E only goes to EAT .If E does annoy you, you can put him on your ignore list, Not a dig at the guy, but the option is provided by the T2V forum .

    Just an opinion.

Anyone who actually read his trip report would know that Rushbo won a $1400 jackpot. He also stayed at a fine hotel, enjoyed the company of his family, attended a Vegas wedding, and cruised down the Strip in a convertible. Is that enough Vegas ambience for everyone?

It sounds to me like Rushbo had more fun than his critics usually have. He did it with careful planning, and in the context of a steady job and a steady relationship. People who depend on luck alone to make them happy tend to hate and envy people who succeed with a more disciplined approach. That explains the petty reactions to his downtown comment, as well as the vicious personal attacks on him.

And I'm the one making Holier than thou posts???

That's some pretty clever pop psychology there LV. That and 99 cents will get you a decent shrimp cocktail at the Golden Gate--if, of course, you could find your way through the wretched mass of low class humanity that obviously infests the greater Fremont Street area.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and speak for everyone and say that nobody that visits this site on a regular basis has any envy whatsoever for Elrushbo, except for maybe you. It sounds to me that if he ever came to a sudden stop, a medical procedure would be required to remove your broken nose from his nether regions.

Opinions are great. I'm glad we all have them. Most of the time I'm glad they're diverse. It was purely the use of the term "shithole" that bothered me. It's exclusionary to those of us who do enjoy downtown (regardless of the size of our...bankrolls) and it makes an otherwise enjoyable and possibly informative trip report a write-off. There are MANY ways to express diverse opinions without being completely obnoxious.

Easy now Learning... You can't throw that out like that. We here have opinions, and we can express our opinions how we feel necessary. For you to think that some of us "depend on luck, etc..." is absurd. I know that I plan my trips. I have a steady job. The relationship thing is not going so well, but that doesn't mean I don't have fun when I go. It doesn't mean I envy people.

If you don't like the "name calling" you can't throw stuff like that out too.

    Thanks

The message is important, but the delivery is what people remember. And e'bo placed his on the cyber doorstep with a big fat eff you tag on it. Given his history here, and such a classy greeting, I'm not at all surprised by the reactions.

As for some of the other comments:

Good eateries are not all "fancy pants," and I know 'cause I've worn shorts and Land's End chinos to some of Vegas' finest. LOL Fine food is just that, fine food. It's consumption only confers status on those who want or think it confers status. For everyone else it's just a superior dining and tasting experience. Like I said in an earlier post, paraphrasing -- all food is fuel, but it can be more than fuel. Again, I think it's all in the delivery.

The adequate bankroll gaffe was priceless. We probably arrive in Vegas with the smallest bankroll of most of the active posters here. Yet you're more likely to find us at the JW Marriott, Lake Las Vegas, Caesars or Mirage, for instance, than the IP or Flamingo. The only thing that signifies is that we look at Vegas as a resort getaway spot first and foremost, and as if we were in Scottsdale or Vail, we don't want just a hotel. By the same token, I know a number of people who arrive with pockets bulging and it's nothing but downtown. And they of course recognize the superior gambling value downtown versus the Strip.

People, people, people. Downtown is not a shithole. It's not as posh as some places on the strip, but to be honest, there are parts of the strip where I'm less comfortable than I am downtown. That strip mall area between center and south strip creeps me out. So does the area around the McDonald's on North Strip. Of course, I try not to stray too far off Fremont Street when I'm downtown either.

I also don't think bankroll has anything to do with where you stay. I think the cheapest trip I ever took to Vegas I stayed at MBay, Aladdin and TI. I think the whole trip (food and gaming included) cost less than $150. If I had money to gamble with, I'd have stayed at Main Street Station where I knew I could works the comps to my favor.

Part of the problem here is that people are trying to make things black and white. "You're an asshole if you don't agree with me." Guess what, that makes me want to disagree with you just to piss you off. [IMG] Let's all remember (ELRUSHBO!!! [IMG] ) that people are entitled to respect and welcome to their opinion. You can say that you thought downtown was dirty or slummy or whatever, but to imply something is wrong with me because I like it there is just wrong and mean spirited and sort of asshole like behavior. ;)

Let's just try to be civil. Don't make mamma angry. You won't like mamma angry. [IMG]

WOW! I'm gonna get creamed for this, but so be it-I'm a big girl and I won't be offended.

I enjoyed your TR rush. I think it's cool that you do what you want to when you go to Vegas-eat at nice places with famous chefs. Bully for you! I of course am on the opposite end as my biggest food quest is for In-n-Out, but each to his own.

I LIKE it downtown, but wasn't offended by your opinion of it being a "shithole." You and I differ and that's fine by me.

As for the "adequate bankroll" I'd like a definition, because I know I'm no where near reaching it and I'd like to have something to strive for. Seriously, that didn't offend me either (and I'm probably the only person here who routinely goes to Vegas and stays in cheap hotels because I've got no money, and will spend 4 days there on a $200 bankroll).

I will take issue with the condescending manner in which those posts appeared to be written. Making good use of word choice might have saved you there.

    Cheers!

There has been more points made here than the presidential debate...Lets remember this is a Vegas website that has a bunch of people on it that enjoy all aspects of Las Vegas. Sometimes people want to inflame and sometimes people want to entertain and sometimes people want to inform. I think Rushbo wanted to inflame and from the looks of it, it worked. Sometimes you have to realize there are much more important things to worry about than if someone thinks the place you like in Vegas is a $HITHOLE. I happen to live in NYC and to me Fremont Street is quite safe but that is my opinion. Have a [IMG] take the comment for what it is worth and remember that I only have 10 days to Vegas ;) !

Input? How about "lack of surprise". ElReezee has been a beezee for sheezee since the bigeezee.

Input? How about "if I could roll my eyes any louder, your ears might explode."

Input? I'll give you some input. One of my main objectives in life right now. Is to realize the lack of importance in labels. When I came home to the bay (GOD BLESS CALIFORNIA!) I had a trunk of clothes down in the basement. I am not kidding when I say. Every item of clothing was Ralph Lauren. I have a dozen Ralph Lauren sweaters two dozen Ralph Lauren button up shirts. The list goes on and on! Does this make my clothing any better than say... Mikey's? Two months ago I would have said undoubtedly, yes. Today I can say. A shirt is a shirt. If it keeps you warm and you like the look. THE END.

Instead I see a guy like ElRush shoving these labels down our throat. "I am staying at the Mandalay Bay, look at me look at me! I like Michael Mina and eat at Emeril's, look at me look at me!" I have seen and heard from people who can easily afford these things without blinking an eye. Cruiser comes to mind. I have seen reports from him where he loses thousands and ends it with "ugh". I would end it with a gunshot.

ElRush seems to be trying to play his importance to the umpteenth degree. When he obviously has absolutely none. By the way... I ate at Emeril's this past trip. The sushi was very good. Otherwise, I would say, it is one of the most over-rated restaurants I have ever been to.

    Couple quick tidbits.

I sure hope I don't get lumped in with Rush when I post my Christmas report in a couple months! Please keep in mind that just because a trip report has details of high end flop houses and fancy eats, it is not always out of pretention or a "Hey, look at me" attitude. For Christmas, my wife and I stay at the Bay each year. This year we are even tying THEhotel. We do it because I want to treat my wife the best I can, and it is a tremendous value versus other times of the year. ($149 this year, but as low as $79 in past years) We eat at gourmet joint once or twice because in Iowa, we don't have alot of options along those lines. Besides, we are on vacation in the land that doesn't find anything excessive or over the top. I give the details, because I love to read detailed trip reports so those are the types I write.

That being said, Rush give downtown an honest try man. Maybe start at the Golden Nugget to help "acclimate" yourself if you think you need that. Some of my best Vegas memories happened under and around the canopy. Take a ride on the "Grain Train" over at LaBayou and let the good times roll!

I am not dogging out anybody's version of LV. The last time I was in LV I was staying in a suite at the MGM Grand with a jacuzzi tub the size of my current bed. The only times I will talk about people's decisions. Is when for the exact same level of money. They can do better. Just an F.Y.I. NOBODY could confuse you for Elreezee.

Damn...somebody's doggin' my dice shirt? If only Ralphie Boy would make some nice lookin' Hawaiian shirts in man sizes, there might be a few more Polo ponies strewn about the floor at the foot of my bed. In the meantime, if I want to dress up, I still have my baby-blue tuxedo with the ruffled shirt. [IMG]
