Mohegan Sun- Birthday trip report!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes yesterday! I had a great 24 hour trip to Mohegan with my gambling friend Steve (because we all need a gambling friend- and so far none of my girlfriends like to make quick overnight trips to the Casinos- yet... I will get them all hooked eventually).

We left Northern NH around noon- it was snowing/sleeting/icing...yuck, which turned into downpours. Slow driving and bad weather added an extra hour to the normal four hour drive. Checked in to Mohegan, this would be our first time staying there- though we have gambled there a few times before. Foxwoods usually just gives us better offers. But we were surprised that Mohegan had given us a $19 room rate... so we jumped on it. At check in we found they charge a $9 amenity fee each day. They don't do that at Foxwoods- noted.

Our room was very very nice. Made me feel like I was in Vegas, beautiful tile work in the bathroom- super comfy pillow top bed and a nice flat screen. We got changed (I into my super sparkly birthday outfit- hey I can dress like I am going to Vegas) then headed down to the Casino.

I wanted to spend some time in the race book- we stopped and played a couple slots along the way- I was having no luck Steve who has never played slots (he is strictly blackjack and poker) started playing a 25 cent machine and won about $60.

We then walked over to the race book, it's very nice, but not as some of the ones I have seen to in Vegas (I just got hooked on casual horse betting this past fall at a local fair), and I think I like the one at Foxwoods a little better. Steve has also never bet on horses, so I gave him a quick overview... and then we made our picks. I decided to go by the name in one race. I thought to myself if Sophia, my eight year old daughter was here- which horse would she pick? Clearly she would pick the horse named RAINBOW, so I placed a $5 straight bet and won $65. Sweet, I will deposit that into her bank account.

We then headed over to Todd English's Tuscany for a nice dinner. It was superb. I ordered Carbonara, Steve ordered Chicken and we split a mixed antipasto for an appetizer. It was all delicious! I really wanted dessert- but I was pretty sure it would put me over the edge and I wouldn't even be able to sit at a blackjack table if I ate anymore.

We then headed over to the Casino, I like how Mohegan is broken up into three different Casino's, Earth, Sky and Wind... they all feel so different. Sky is my favorite because it's BRIGHT and colorful. We played Spanish 21 for a little while but I quickly lost $100 and decided to stop there and go play Roulette. I hit 8 (which I always play since Sophia is 8) and won $105 ( I am a small better). I hit one more time, but I definitely lost more overall. I did get quite a bit out of play out of my initial $60 buy in so I wasn't too upset. I played some slots for a little bit- but once again I was just donating to the Casino on my birthday. I was getting tired so I checked in with Steve and headed back to the room. Passing out by 1am.

Steve went on to play in Mohegan's midnight poker tournament. He finished right after the bubble and ended up getting his money back plus a little extra. He played Black Jack until about 5am. and then woke me up to tell me he had made some money. I didn't really care at that point- I just wanted to sleep.

We woke up around 9 with the goal of leaving the Casino by 10 as I needed to be back up in the Mountains by 4. I had one $29 voucher left in my purse and Steve had chips to cash in. So as he was doing that I put the voucher in a $5 slot machine. It had a 2 credit max, but I just bet one credit at a time. On my third spin I got some fancy looking 5 another fancy looking 5 and a bar. Then the machine started going crazy. It said I won 250 credits and HP kept flashing. I knew this met hand pay but I kept thinking why would they need to hand pay me $250, then an onlooker told me... "You just won $1250" Awesome! I get it now. So that was my birthday present from Mohegan.



I gave Mohegan my identity (or at least all the details of it) and after a couple checks with this person and that person, the slot attendant handed me a nice little stack of crisp $100's. She kept asking me if I wanted to take taxes out- I don't usually have much tax liability- cause I am a Mom and a bartender, So I opted to not have them take the taxes out, I don't know if this was a good or bad decision (but I will hold some money aside just in case).

I took the last $4 voucher I had stuck it in a $1 machine... and won $50 on my first pull.. I cashed this one out and decided to call it a day. Thanking Mohegan for their generous belated Birthday present, and back to the Mountains I go. This will be a good start to my Vegas in April fund!

Nice little birthday hit! Well done.

My horse betting strategy is always based on the horse’s name! I was up at a track near Indianapolis last summer and bet on a long shot with “Rainbow†in its name, and hit for a couple hundred dollars off my $10 bet. Let that be a lesson to you all – betting on horses named Rainbow is a positive EV game!

Going to play the ponys in the am, will bet every Rainbow horse I see.

They don't offer to take out taxes at our tribal casino. But I know I have always lost more in the year than I have won, LOL (No - Really????? wow!). So it always washes out on the tax form.

 

Congrats...haven't been to Mohegan in a few years...I just stick with Foxwoods...glad you had a good time and Happy Birthday! Northern Mass here about a 1 hr 45 min drive for us.
