    My Trip Report

First off, I am a firm believer in the notion that planning a trip is often as much fun as the trip itself. While true most of the time, not so in this case. Don’t get me wrong, we had a great time planning this birthday trip for the wife, but the time we had, far exceeded our expectations.

Left out of Islip early Friday morning. That tiny little airport in the middle of Long Island is a true gem. No line at check-in or security and we’re through to the food court for a fabulous airport breakfast of stale bagels and powdered eggs. Didn’t matter one bit. First meal of vacation, headed to Vegas, no kids on the hip, always tastes like a gourmet feast. Per usual, Southwest has us lined up on-time, in the air and back on the ground as scheduled. Welcome to McCarrran International and all of its city’s debaucherous offerings!!

We hook up with three of our friends at the airport and head over to Mirage to start the festivities. Check-in is a breeze and Brittany at the desk is an absolute doll. She works her tail off in making sure our entire group is on the same floor and in close proximity to one another. Nice tip headed her way for the effort. Only one of our rooms is currently ready so we all toss our gear in the room and head down for some lunch.

By now the breakfast eggs have lost any of their staying power and BLT Burger is sounding great. The group knocks back a few pitchers of beer with lunch and we’re headed down that old familiar path. First time at BLT and I enjoy my burger and fried dill pickles. Nothing earth shattering, but a good base nonetheless. We pile out of the restaurant to be greeted by RHUMBAR staring us in the face. Uh-oh...mojitos!!!! As we proceed to kill a larger-than-necessary handful of cocktails, one of our friends disappears and shows back up holding 5 jello shots from the counter next door. WTF?!?!? When did we end up back in my frat house??? Kill ‘em and now it’s really on. As much as the Scorpion Bowl (128 ounces of rum punch in a shared tiki bowl) seemed like a great idea, some little voice inside my head thinks better of it and we avoid that disaster by a hair.

Room’s finally ready now after 4+ hours of RHUMBAR/BB King’s happy hour and we head up to get ready for dinner and more friends later that evening. Wifey’s got that mid-day glaze on now and I’m afraid we’ve got “First night girl†on our hands. We head over to Dos Caminos in Palazzo for dinner where my assumptions are fully realized. We hook up with another set of friends and our group of nine sits down for some margaritas and Mexican grub. The food was just okay. The homemade guac and chips were good, but the entrées didn’t do all that much for any of us. Wife keeps getting up to walk around during dinner and really didn’t eat much of anything. Combo of rum earlier and pre-dinner tequila is now reaching a fever pitch for miss “I think I’ll be wearing these impossible to walk around in heels†now! These things that women call wedges look more like Japanese torture devices to me. Ankle breakers for those whose balance is not what it should be.

What’ s next?? Oh sure, Gilley’s at TI sounds like a good idea. Mechanical bulls and line dancing will do my little inebriated elf just fine. Group heads to Gilley’s and now the rest of my friends are in charge of keeping the better half out of lock-up. I’ve got my own agenda to attend to, namely gawking at the chaps-wearing beer and shot girls. All things being equal, we have a pretty good time there. One of our friends decides she’s taking on the bull and hops on for a go. This friend is a very well-endowed lady and entertains the crowd in her two minutes on the bull, more than the band did all night. Can’t believe they charge women to do this! I’m finally able to convince ‘drunky the clown’ to head out around 12:45am and stumble back to Mirage with me. Gotta take off her heels before the trek though, regardless of what it’s going to do to her feet. Back at the crib, she tries jumping right into our nicely laundered, white linen bed with strip-sludge caked on those soles. Not happening. Toss her in the tub and get her dialed in. Nitey-nite princess. To another great day tomorrow.

I’m still on east coast time when I wake up at 4:30am on day two. Slightly concerned with how the morning’s going to treat ‘first night girl’ I try to maintain some peace and quiet for her for the next couple of hours. She comes back to life around 7:30 and is in much better shape than I’d anticipated. We corral the group and head down to Carnegie Deli for some breakfast. Not great service, but the french toast is pretty kick-ass. Others in our group gave mixed reviews on the other breakfasts. The ladies decide it’s a good idea to spend some time at the pool sweating out the previous night’s toxins and I am completely OUT on that idea. I’ll pass on the 111 degree heat, thanks. I play some BJ and enter the 11am poker tourney there in the Mirage. It’s a well run tournament and the players are really a mixed bag. Some locals, some tourists and all levels of skill. I bust out in 17th place out of 42. No cash, but I’m happy with my play.

Head over to concierge and book a limo for the group dinner later that evening. At this point, I’m really impressed with the level of service at Mirage. Between check-in, concierge, dealers and cocktail waitresses, I haven’t encountered a single difficulty in getting anything I needed. Friendly, informative and efficient. Kudos to the staff.

Group rallies later that day to head to Foundation Room at Mandalay Bay for dinner. I find our limo driver, James and he’s ready to go right on time. We hop into our limo and there’s some kind of weird smell that everyone gets a kick out of. We all thought of ‘The Entity’ from Seinfeld. Make our way down the strip and up to the Foundation Room Lounge. Great place to sit back and sip a cocktail. Top floor of Mandalay Bay with a sweet view on the outdoor patios. Hang there a couple of hours and then head in for our dinner. Great wine selection, very good food and the staff was great in taking extra special care of the wife as it was her birthday. I’d recommend this as a stop for anyone interested in a nice dinner with good service. We head back into the lounge area and it’s pretty hoppin now. I decide that tonight’s the night I try to reach my goal of 10,000 sapphire and tonics in one night. The whole group is pressing pretty hard and we’re all having a great time.

Once the crowd gets a little too thick, we decide to bail and check out Rumjungle. The ladies in our group all like to dance and we get free admission into the club with some passes we were able to acquire, so figured, why not. Crazy crowd in Rumjungle. I’m well on my way now. I don’t believe I was able to hit 10,000 sapphires at Foundation but probably came close. Decided I’d switch things up and order a double Booker’s on the rocks. BAD CALL. Last thing I remember from that club was a guy break-dancing in the middle of the bottle-service area looking like he was having a fit. Kind of freaked me out.

About 2am, group decides it’s time to hit a strip club. We acquire a Mandalay Bay limo and tell the driver to take us to Bada Bing. He proceeds to take us to Crazy Horse. Seriously, man??? Come on. We’re paying you way too much money to have to deal with this type of B.S. We’re all too whacked at this point to make a huge issue out of it. So we roll in and get the hard-sale hustle from the doorman on bottle service. Denied! We settle into a decent area where we’re pestered as expected but have a pretty good time watching all the talent. My friends all kick in and get my wife a lengthy lap dance which she probably enjoys a little too much. But I’m digging it too, so who am I to talk. Blurry end to the Crazy Horse as the 9,999 sapphires plus one double Bookers still have their hold on me.

Next memory is walking back into Carnegie Deli for late nite snax. 30 seconds after I sit down, I jump up and announce to the group that if I have to look at a menu with a tongue and liver omelette, we’ll be calling Hal for a clean-up on aisle 5. I’m headed to the slots while they nosh. Sit down at a machine, throw in $100 and love the mindlessness of it all. Don’t know how long I played, but next thing I know, I’m being nudged in the shoulder by someone waking me up. Oh Shit, Security’s gonna throw me out on a rail! Nope, it’s a working girl. She says to me, ‘Boy, you can’t be sleeping here. Let me take you upstairs and I’ll keep you up til the sun comes up.’ I’m polite in my decline, but thank her for waking me up and not cashing out my remaining $42. I head upstairs and meet back up with the wife who’s freakin out since she thought I was already back in the room. Tell her the story of the slot machine incident and she’s dying laughing. We crash out hard for the end of day 2.
    More to follow.

Good TR so far I have enjoyed the read thus far!! I have never stayed at the Mirage but have always heard good things about it. With that said, I do ALWAYS go there in the early mornings to play craps because the crew consists of some very very seasoned dealers who are great and on top of things. I usually play there about 5-6 hours and then leave around lunch time. The Monte Cristo sandwich at their sandwich shop is huge, kike 3 pounds no kidding. I guess it should be for 24 bucks. Me and the other half couldn't eat the whole thing between us, I highly recommend it!

Again thanks for sharing your trip......

    Day 3

    Sorry for the long delay…

Where was I??? So I jump ship in Hong Kong and get on as a looper in Tibet…Oh wait, totally different story. Day 3. We’re finally able to sleep in a little bit after a 4:30am rack out. Still, up and rolling around 9. Rally with the crew an hour later and regale the group with my story of the ‘slot attendant’ wake-up call. Predictably, many laughs are had on my account. Nobody’s really in the mood for a breakfast meal and a couple people in our group are interested in heading to In and Out Burger so we decide to make it a lunch run on the early side of the day. I opt out on the cab ride out only to be roped into some time at the Forum Shops. It’s okay as I can use a little A/C and love how dark it is in the common areas when I’m hangin this bad. Remnants of my efforts last night continue to haunt me. An hour into the shopping spree and I’m dying for some food. Don’t want anything fancy so the food court in Caesar’s is tremendously appealing at this point. Big slice of pepperoni, a mountain dew, and I’m right as rain. I immediately feel the healing powers of the greasy slice and decide it’ll be my job to convince the crew to head across the street to Harrah’s Carnival Court. Not an easy task as the rest of the team’s in as bad shape as I am and it’s headed toward 109 today. Still, cold beers and loud music are on tap to level me out.

We lose one of our crew back to the hotel for a nap and four of us head over to listen to The Spasmatics, an all 80’s retro band. It takes a little effort, but with the help of the atmosphere and festive music, I’m able to convince the crew into a bucket of beers. One bucket turned into a few buckets, the ladies start drinking frozen drinks, the bartenders start working their flair magic, and… well you know how it goes. Our friends from IN and Out meet up with us and jump right into the fray as well. Someone in the crowd recognizes my shirt from Purdue and he buys our group a round of shots. We have a great time all day out there regardless of the stifling heat and now we’re running late for dinner.

Run back to the room, shower and hustle over to Bellagio where we’ve got an 8:00 reservation at Olives. Meet up with a few other friends at the bar for a pre-game and then head into the dining area where the sommelier makes a bee-line for me as he sees me picking up the wine list. You’ve got the wrong man. I send him down to my wine-snob buddy at the other end of the table and he proceeds to wow all the ladies at the table with his extensive knowledge of Pinots from the Pacific Northwest. Man! Some guys have all the game. Dinner’s great. The service is pretty on-point with the exception of a couple of late entrees, and we’re pleasantly surprised to find them removed from the bill. As far as the food goes, my favorite item was the flatbread chorizo and shrimp appetizer. Great way to start with a group. The tenderloin medallions that I had were pretty tasty, but the risotto that accompanied was the real star of the show. Rest of the table’s reviews were pretty good, but nothing remarkable. Expected more from the food end, but a great time with great friends nonetheless.

Post-dinner, we head to our group’s nostalgic venue of choice, Cleopatra’s Barge. Now, for those of you not familiar with this pearl, it’s a little lounge in Caesars that doesn’t get much hype and always attracts what I’d call a fairly eclectic mix of people. It’s got a little dance floor and is surrounded by multi-level tiers with tables and chairs where we’re able to converse and get our drink on while people watching and making fun of the girls in our group who take over the dance floor. They’re able to coax a handful of others out onto the floor and now it’s a party. We came upon this out of the way, under-frequented lounge when this same group was out for the wife’s 30th birthday and we now make a point to hit it every time we descend upon Vegas. Nothing pretentious and we’re able to make our own fun in a place like this.

Couple hours of sweatin’ to the 70’s and 80’s and we decide it’s time to move on. I suggest we head to Revolution in the Mirage. Never had a chance to hang there and it looks like a pretty happening place every time we walk by. So the group meanders over and we’ve got a couple of friends with us who aren’t staying at the Mirage. I figure I’d head to the host stand to see if I can talk them into the club without having to pay the cover. Put my game face on and do my best to flirt with the hostess when she stops me cold and looks back over my shoulder at our group of 4 couples plus one married guy, sans wife. ‘Sir, ummm, just so you know, this is our gay-friendly night here at Revolution.’ Hmmmm…wonder how this is going to play with our group? I call for a huddle and give them the rundown. Decide that we’ll give Jet a shot. Get over to Jet…Jet’s closed tonight. King Ink sounds great at this point. We get into King Ink and it’s dead as Dillinger. The waitress is clamoring to get over to us as she smells blood in the water. Unfortunately for her, though, we’re all beginning to hit the wall after three days of hard play and late nights. We’re outside on the patio where it’s cooled all the way down to about 95 and we struggle to kill a couple of rounds. Now I’ve got a buddy who’s completely given up and decides he’s going to sleep right there on the deck. I’m working hard at keeping my eyelids in a locked and upright position and another buddy starts to fall facefirst into his manhattan. Time to go! We break up this so-called party around 2:30 and call it quits. Vegas has conquered us yet again. Last night for everyone except me and the wife. Say our goodbyes and my pillow-top’s got me locked in like a tractor beam. Out like a light.

Day 4, and Monday morning’s got me and the wife feeling a little melancholy and yet still excited as we’ll have a bit of time to enjoy Vegas on our own. Start out with breakfast at BB King’s with two of our friends whose flight is later in the afternoon. Pancakes were absolutely BANGIN! Just what I needed to get out of this too-familiar fog that Vegas mornings have brought me. Before friends have to leave, the four of us play some slots throughout the casino with nothing to really show for our efforts. We get them into a cab and decide it’ll be an afternoon walking the strip. We haven’t seen Circle Center up close and personal yet so we make our way down via most of the other casinos along the way. Wife’s got some birthday cash burning a hole in her pocket so Tiffany’s is on the itinerary. We make our way to Crystals and find it to be a pretty cool place. I continue to ask myself, though, ‘How many Rolex shops can one area have?’ Seriously, how many $10,000 watches can be sold on a month-to-month basis on the strip alone? Must be a lot, because every one of the big hotels has a shop selling them. Anyway, we meander around gawking at all the high-end joints and the Mrs. buys herself a necklace as she had hoped. The matching bracelet catches her eye. Something for another day…

Decide to start heading back to the Mirage end of the strip as we’ve got tickets for Mystere later on and decide on PF Chang’s happy hour appetizer menu for lunch. Consistent in their offerings, lettuce wraps, dumplings and firecracker shrimp are just what the doctor ordered. Back to the hotel and want to head over to Treasure Island to do a little gambling before the show. We’re both low-rollers when it comes to casinos, but I like to play dollar slots a couple of times each trip. So I sidle up to a two-credit Wild Cherry machine and throw in a C-note. Machine’s not really doing much for me and so at $70, I cash it out and give the voucher to the wife. She was lucky earlier in the day playing on the Jaws machine and I was hoping this would be her night. She moves around like a shark sniffing out prey and finally decides on a two-credit ‘4 Times Diamond’ machine. Drops in the voucher and plays her first few minutes with little result. After only about 15 pulls, though……..7---7---4 Times Diamond! Hits for $480. Nice. Now we’re playing with house money. I tell her to take it either up to $550 or down to $400. She’s going bonkers having a blast now and she drew in a little crowd with the ringing of the bells on the machine. So she’s playing for only about 3 minutes more and, wouldn’t you know it….Four Times Diamond---Triple Bar---Four Times Diamond, for another $960!!!! Now we’re really juiced. Biggest hit for me or the wife in our combined 10 trips to Vegas. Crowd that was there from her earlier hit can’t believe it. The vultures are circling now and can’t wait for us to get up and leave. She plays it down to $1450 and we cash out. Not a bad turn on the $70 she dropped in. Worst part about it was that all of our friends and family are on east coast time and we didn’t want to wake anyone with the story of our little jackpot. Oh well, we’ll enjoy this on our own.

Mystere is a great show and our windfall adds to our enjoyment. I could do without all the ‘grown man as a baby’ stuff, but overall we’re amazed with the performance and would recommend it to anyone. We’re still riding high after the show and head over to the Grand Lux Café at Venetian for dinner. The midnight staff was a little slower than average, but the food we had was very good and both enjoyed our time. We decide to call it a night after our dinner as I know tomorrow will have a trip back to Tiffany’s in store for me. The bracelet beckons!

Last day in Vegas. We sleep in knowing we plan on making this a pretty lazy day. We’re still relishing the fact that the wallet’s thicker this morning than it was 24 hours ago. We get it together and head back out onto the strip close to 10:30 planning on doing a little shopping, a little gambling and basically taking it easy. First stop, of course, Tiffany’s. Wife’s had the bracelet on the brain since she saw those lovely credits adding up. We make our way to not one, but three different Tiffany’s stores and finally make the big purchase at the scene of the original crime yesterday at City Center. She’s beaming as she wears her hard earned bauble out of the store. Very well deserved. Head into Aria as we skipped the casino yesterday and check out the joint. I like the overall vibe, but it’s pretty dark in there. For a place that plays on the notion of natural light, I feel a bit like a vampire who’s seeking shelter in the middle of the day.

Decide to head over to Monte Carlo where we have lunch at the Brewpub. Pretty good burger for the wife and I really enjoyed my steak sliders. Along with a couple of brews with lunch, all made for a nice experience. The wife, however, had her eyes on The Cupcakery even before we sat down for lunch. Nice little shop in the back corner of the Monte that has a great selection of different treats. She settles on a coconut cupcake and raves about it while I look for a $5 Blackjack table. I see a few people sitting at a table with a friendly looking dealer so I decide to join the fray. Couple on my right are just having fun with no real knowledge of how to play and the guy on my left seems a bit too intense for our little group. I know basic strategy pretty well but don’t let other people’s play impact me at all. Intense guy seems to be getting annoyed by the couple’s play and decides it’s time to go. Fine by me. A group of seniors from Louisiana sits down on my left and are having a ball with us. Again, no high stakes, but the table’s environment was exactly what I was looking for. I had only played for about 45 minutes when the group started to fall out and eventually I was the only one at the table. I’m more of a social player so I thank the dealer with a nice tip and head on my way, down a grand total of….$5, which included pretty steady tipping. Monte treated me well.

We move on to MGM and NYNY where we play a bunch of low-limit slots. MGM’s the only place we could find my wife’s favorite slot, Fortune Cookie. Well at least it used to be her favorite slot until she discovered Four Times Diamond. No real result on the slots, but while in NYNY, find that someone stole the Tiffany’s box out of the bag. Don’t know exactly when it happened, but thankfully she had the bracelet on her wrist. We meander around the strip for most of the afternoon and end up in the piano bar at Harrah’s during karaoke time. We had a great time watching and listening. One particular guy named Don, who reminded me of Scotty Nguyen, had his own cd’s with him and sang nothing but country tunes. At one point was serenading my wife and I’m eating this scene up! Also had two gals from Chicago that blew the doors off the place. Wondering if they were hired help. Didn’t matter to us though. Had a great time enjoying the scene. When karaoke ended, the dueling pianos started up and we decided it was time to head. California Pizza Kitchen back at the Mirage had our number for dinner and hit the spot for both of us. Knowing that our flight the next day would have us up and out by 7:30, we head back up, pack and call it an early night around 11.

Up and at ‘em bright and early, and out the door of the Mirage by 7:30 as planned. We truly enjoyed all aspects of the Mirage and would definitely stay there again. McCarran is a breeze, no line at check-in, no line at security and we’re waiting at our gate with an hour and a half to spare. We watch the crazies at the airport slots pressing hard to chase it to the very last minute and have to laugh a little bit. Just like on the way out, Southwest gets us boarded, in the air, and back to Long Island right on time. It’s been a fantastic trip but I’m looking forward to being attacked by my two monkeys waiting at home.

Nothing about this trip was disappointing. I’m ready to do it all over again and it’s been only two weeks since we got back. I know it’s been a lengthy and detailed report but hope you’ve enjoyed reading it(as much as I've enjoyed relivin it.) GOOD NIGHT NEW YORK!!!!!

Worth the wait! Vegas with friends can be a complete blast but I continue to find sharing the town with just the DH is still the best way to go! At least you only have to share the big wins with the spouse, or in your case, Tiffany. I bet the thief was disappointed when he/she opened the magical blue box and it was empty. Boohoo you %&^#@*!

Ah, yes, the Cupcakery. It's on my list for October!

We are staying five nights out of our ten night stay at TI. You must know what's coming next... Can I get a location on that lucky 4X Diamond machine?!:)

Congrats on the nice win, good times, and the wife's birthday celebration.

I’m finally able to convince ‘drunky the clown’ to head out around 12:45am

What a classic line. I love it!!! Very fun read. I can relate.

    OT sorry but your picture

I was THIS CLOSE to riding in the weiner mobile one year.

After running in the Bix 7 mile race one year I was drinking in a bar in my race clothes chatting up people, like I usually do, and it turns out they are the weiner mobile people. They told me the driver would be back in about one hour and if I wanted to wait I could RIDE in the weiner mobile. Yes, RIDE in the wiener mobile.

OMG!!!! I was having fun but one more hour of drinking would have pushed me over the limit, and I knew my wife would be wondering what the heck I was doing. Sorry to off track the thread.

That machine is near the back. follow the main walkway back toward the custom 'siren' motorcycle. You'll hit a fork where you can either stay left toward the Mystere theater or right toward more machines. Stay right past the cafe and head all the way back to a bank of $1 machines just to the right of the Wheel of Fortune progressives. Four Times Diamond faces the front of the casino. Hope this helps and best of luck! Let me know if you hit.
