    My Trip Report

The players are myself, my wife M and my 2 nieces K and J. Both are kids from my wife's side of the family. K is her older sisters youngest and J is her kid brother's oldest. When they were about 12, both of them asked us to take them to Vegas someday. I promised them that if they went to college and graduated with a B average, a Vegas trip would be thier graduation gift. They never forgot it!....and I was more than glad to pay up.

Both are very close to us and each other. J has been diabetic since the age of 5. We learned how to give her insulin shots so she could spend time away from her folks when necessary. K loved our house and big pool and spent most of every summer at our house with J. Since we don't have any children of our own, all of our nieces and nephews considered us like a second set of parents. Most of them are grown now, but during the summer our house was like some kind of childrens camp.

We flew United and I got all 4 of us in Economy Plus, which has a lot of extra leg room. The ladies had a row to themselves and I had the asle across from them on all 4 legs of the trip. It is the next best thing to first class and the girls were very happy. We connected through Chicago and all flights were a little early. The only problem was of course getting them up in time for the first light at 7:30. But we managed and landed in Vegas at 11:45 AM. I was in such a good mood untill the cabbie said "do you want the fastest route?". I said don't even think about the freeway. Then I gave him a few minutes of a hard time about taking advantage of unsuspecting travelers. I also told him that long hauling is the hottest topic on all the Vegas boards and that he will end up in trouble eventually. I'm sure it did no good. I'm convinced more and more that the cab companies are actually the ones behind it. But it really did piss me off.

We got the the hotel and the girls were horrified by a long check in line. I smiled and said....."didn't I tell you this was my town?". We went to Diamond check in and bypassed everyone. We were greeted with 4 cold bottled waters and our rooms. My wife and I had a GO 2 room suite. Separate living area and bedroom. Big flat screen in both rooms, plus the GO TV in the bathroom mirror. We also had a fridge so we had a place to keep J's insulin safe. Right next door the girls had a GO room with 2 queen beds. They both commented that it was nicer than their dorm rooms. We all got unpacked and I asked the girls what they wanted to do.

I have to digress for a bit here. I wrote my host about 3 months ago about the reservations. I only asked for connecting rooms and let him know I would have my 2 nieces staying next door. I generally am able to handle all my reservations through him with a simple mail note. I never ask for a suite and he always gives us one. This time not an hour after my mail note he called me. He was acting strangely and said "Rick, can you talk freely at the moment?". I said yea sure...what is wrong? He said are you sure you want your "nieces" right next door. I can put them on a different floor or even a different casino if it is better? I wasn't catching on at first....then it hit me and I started laughing. I said...no, they are REAL nieces! He was so relieved. He said he really likes Mary and it was upsetting him, so he had to call to be sure. I had tears in my eyes and put M on the phone with him so they could have a laugh as well.

I have a standard approach with Vegas newbies. I make them do some research and tell me what they want to do. I refuse to be a tour guide and guess preferences. HM will be pleased to know that her web site was one of the references they found most useful. I also warned them that any indesretions may well be recorded on this very site! So with some confidence I asked them what they wanted to do for the afternoon. The lovely ladies said "we thought you would like to gamble some, so we are doing to Fashion Show and Forum shops today". I tried hard not do jump with joy but it may have shown some anyhow.

So the 4 of us headed off in different directions. The girls to shop, my wife to the slots, and myself to the sports book. I bet a couple of baseball parlays and played the horses for the afternoon. No real luck would be the theme all week. My wife had some good fortune on the slots when the Sex and the City machines gave her some dress or shoe thing that paid $300. The girls found us around 5:00. Well, actually they found my wife in the room, they tried calling me but my phone was mysteriously balky all week. My wife claims I was ignoring it......she is only right half the time, but this time she was right. No one was in the mood for a big meal so we settled for the Burger Brasserie at Paris. Not a bad burger, over priced of course.....but good quality. The girls were of course horrifed at the prices all week. I had to keep encouraging them to order what they want and to not pay attention to the prices. They got used to spending Uncle Rick's money, but it took some encouragement.

After dinner we went into the Paris casino for a little family gambing session. Both girls are very affectionate, so I typically had one on each arm the entire trip. J is about 5' 9" and K is all of 6' 1". I'm going to sound like a typical Uncle, but I think they could both be models. We found a roulette table just opening up and I bought $400 in dollar chips and gave each of us $100 to play with. The table was a $10 minimum, so I gave the girls a quick lesson in how to play the inside and outside. The girls are both adept at betting the horses from trips to the track with me, so they are not entirely new to the concept of risk/reward. At the racetrack J was the conservative one. If she got ahead she would often keep her winnings and just watch the races. K was more likely to up her bets and try to make a big hit. You could see that in how they bet roulette. K was playing the inside, trying to hit a number, while J played the outside trying to maintain her stack. After about 5 minutes my wife went bust and headed to the slots. We were soon joined by some others and the table was great fun. When the girls hit something there were high 5s and hugs all around. Soon we were joined by 2 older women who were not quite as much fun. One of them eventually said "I wonder how much he paid for them". I caught on that the old broads thought I had hired a couople of hookers! The girls were hysterical with laughter. Even the dealer got in the act and said the girls were the first nieces he had at his table that were actually related to the uncle. I went bust next and the girls colored up slightly ahead. I let them keep it and told them to use it as a buy in on the slots.

We headed back to the Flamingo as it was now midnight and I was starting to fade. The girls went to thier room to get dressed to go clubbing! I had line passes for them to all of the HET clubs and they were hitting Caesars that night. I gave them all of the usual cautions about watching their drinks, not taking candy from strangers etc. But there was no way I was going with them! They had our cells and were told to call if they feel uncomfortable about anything or anyone. No questions would be asked, I would come and take them back to the hotel. We went to bed, and they went off for the night.

Suites really work well for us in Vegas. I tend not to sleep much, so I head to the living room, make some coffee and read the paper for a while. I was done with the paper and it was only 4:30!. I decided to shower and head down to kill some time. I was temped to knock on the girls door to see if they got home all right, but there is no way I wanted to wake them after a night out. So down I went.....and who is getting off the elevator at 5 AM, but my 2 nieces! You could see that look of delight on thier faces. It is not much different than the look they had getting off the roller coaster when they were about 10. They said it was SO much fun and like nothing they had ever experienced before. They said they bought the first drink ( $14 each) and never had to buy another all night. I told them I didn't need any details! They both gave me a kiss and went off the bed. I knew I wouldn't be seeing them for a while....those kids can sleep!

I went down to the casino and headed to play quarter spin poker. I droped a quick hundred there and another quick hundred on dollar VP. Another quick hundred fed the wolves and another quick hundred went to more VP. I went back upstairs to lick my wounds. My wife asked how I did and I told her I just went down for coffee. I added that I had 2 cups of decaff at $200 each. she commented that the prices in Vegas are so high these days. I watched some TV while she got ready for breakfast. We headed over to MAG for breakfast. I wish I could convince my wife to stay at Paris, but she is a Harrah's girl all the way. We were at the Flamingo this trip because the girls research indicated the pools at the Flamingo were desirable and it was central to to other activities they wanted to do. My wife likes a casino that she can get out of easily, and Harrah's is hard to beat from that aspect. We had a nice quiet breakfast. I had my customary steak and eggs, and M had a crepe thing that could have been served at Baskin Robbins.

We headed back to the Flamino so I could settle into the sportsbook for a while. We knew the girls would sleep for a long time and we had given them the little card that lets them charge things to the room when they decided to get up and eat. I spread out the form and studied the races. I got off to a bad, start losing a tight photo and then it got worse from there! I couldn't hit a damned thing. I managed to drop a very fast $500 including a $100 on a baseball parlay for later. I went off to play some BJ for a while. Managed to keep my head above water and killed the rest of the afternoon. My wife called.......it may have been the third or fourth time ( remember my phone is balky?) I finally answered and she told me the girls wanted an early dinner since they slept through breakfast, lunch and pool time. It was 5:00 and they were just getting into the shower! I called over to the Range and made reservations for 6:30. I knew the girls would like it and it is my wife's absolute favorite spot. I played some VP to kill some time. Time is expensive these days as it cost me $300 to kill an hour. We headed up to collect the girls. Amazingly they looked like they had never gone out. I guess being 21 and getting 12 hours of sleep will do wonders for you. K had 2 band aides on her feet and J had 3. It seems heels look good, but are not so much fun to dance in. They would be wearing flip flops for the rest of today! We walked over to Harrah's for our dinner reservation. We got a table right by the window and watched the world go by while we drank a bottle of wine. We finally ordered dinner and spent a good 2 hours there eating and listening to the exploits of the night before. They told us about some guys they met from Germany who were fabulously rich and were buying drinks for everyone in sight. They never did find out how they made their money, but I suspect it was the old fashioned way.....inheritance. Guys in their early 20s who will run up a 10K bar tab probably didn't work to hard for their money. The girls said when the tab came, one of them pulled out a charge card to pay it and another said....no my turn. They also saw someone famous from some reality show...Housewives from Hollywood or something like that. And there were at least 3 Paris Hilton sightings.....all of them being wannabe's. Now who wants to be Paris Hilton? I can understand wanting her money...but who wants to look like a malnourished refugee? They both said it was "one of the most fun nights they ever had". But when I asked if they were going out again that night, they said no ......it was one of those things they wanted to check off the list, but not something they would do more than once per trip. Desert came....some kind of cake with chocolate flowing out of it like lava. Impressive presentation, but I was too stuffed after my porterhouse! We went back down to do some gambling at Harrah's. I found a bank of dollar VP machines and loaded myself and the 3 ladies up with a hundred each. J hit for $250 almost immedialty and cashed out! K went bust just after me and my wife hit for $125. My wife decided to play it out for a while so me and the girls headed off for some other slots. Off we went with one girl on each arm. I counted at least 3 dirty looks from other women. The girls had now caught onto the reactions and were watching for them. So remember ladies....before you criticize....it may really be his neice! We found a bank of machines and settled in. J still had $300 she didn't intend to lose, so she was playing 50 cents a spin. K was playing at a dollar per spin and I was foolishly playing at $4/ spin. K won about $75, J managed to only lose $20 and I dropped another $400. It was becoming a very bad pattern! They suggusted a change of scenery would do me good so we found my wife and headed across the street to Caesars. I had some decent luck there winning $750 on spin poker ( caught 4OAK on 9s) and another $400 on the wolves. The girls played roulette with my wife and all 3 managed to win a little something. The girls wanted to hear the cover band at the Carnival court so we parted ways for the rest of the night. M and I headed back the the Flamingo and played VP for the rest of the night. She caught 4OAK Aces for $400 and I lost the same amount. We headed off to bed about 1 AM and the girls were already in their room. Those kids can't hang with experienced Vegas folks!

    More to come...........

I was up at 5:00. Did my usual and had coffee with the paper in the living room. I took a shower and headed down for some play around 6:00. I was playing VP when my phone went off. It was J....she had just gottten a call with a job offer! J was a Chemical Engineering major and there were not a lot of job offers for anyone when they graduated. She had done 2 summer internships at my company, but even they weren't hiring right now. Since I retired last month, my contacts are not quite as strong either. I told her to have them fax the offer to the hotel and I would pick it up for her. I played some more VP....losing again, then headed over to pick up her fax. It was a great offer from a great company. Great benefits and a full relocation package. Further good news is that she would be working in Niagria Falls not too far from our favorite locals casino, so we would have a chance to see her on occasion. I went up to give her the fax and congratulate her. Both K and J were jumping on the beds in celebration. My wife was laughing and pretenting to scold them for jumping on the beds. It was fun to see that much joy at 7 AM! I went through the offer with her. I have made more of those offers myself than I can count, so she was counting on me for advice. In the end I advised her to take the offer as is. It was really a great starting offer for a 21 year old kid, especailly with the economy being what it is. I reminded her that her hard work was for reason, and this was the reason. For some reason that made her cry....and it made K cry.....my wife joined in and cried too....I got something in my eye. So here is is only 7:30 and so much has happened already. I'm now starving and so is everyone else......so I start barking orders like a drill seargent.....shower....get ready...now!! Let's celebrate!

We headed over to MAG....I know what your thinking, we ate there yesterday....get over it...we will eat breakfast there tomorrow too! I ordered a bottle of champange to celebrate. This was cetrainly a Vegas moment. We are sitting outside...in Vegas....at 8:30 in the morning....drinking champange. All 3 ladies were giggling over the situation and feeling very decadent. We spent a lot of the morning there. No one rushed us, we drank, had breakfast and spent a good 2 hours there. I only had a sip since I don't really like chanmpange....even at $150 a bottle. But the 3 ladies had a decent buzz going.

We split up from there. The girls wanted some pool time. I honestly don't know what they like about the pool. They are both so fair they need sun block to go to the mail box. But they lounged, they talked to strange men and they made use of the ability to charge drinks to the room. My wife was going to play slots and I headed off to play the ponies again. A little better luck this day. I caught a Pick 4 that paid over $500 and bet $100 baseball parlay that came back for $556 later that night. I sat next to a guy from NYC who was a real character. He was betting large and drinking large. Around 2:00 in the afternoon his wife came to collect him and she made a scene when he wouldn't leave. He got the "this is MY vacation too" speech, which finally turned the tide in her favor. He went off to follow her through the Forum shops, both of them bitching up a storm. I was in stitches and so was everyone in the sportsook!

The plan was to meet in our room at 6:00 for dinner. When I showed up no one was there! I hate waiting for people! I was just starting to get sour when they showed up. They had been in the other room primping for dinner. I was already primped for the day and wasn't changing....lol. We took the tram down to MGM so I could show them that end of the strip. We had a great dinner at Emeril's. Walked around MGM, saw the lion habitat and went across the street to see NY, NY. Both girls were impressed with the building. Seeing it for the first time is a kick for anyone. We walked around NY, NY....then up to Monte Carlo....into Aria.....we stopped at the fancy chocolate place in Aria and bought some deserts. Sat there for a bit to relax and eat. Then onto Crystals shops.....over to the Bellagio. We walked through the conservatory. Then headed outside to watch the fountain show. We stayed for 3 of them. They again had that "just off the roller coaster" look. The thing that always gets to me is how fast time passes in Vegas. It was now midnight and it seemed we just left the hotel a few minutes before. The girls were knocked out and so were we! So we walked back to our hotel. The ladies all went to bed and I donated $400 to the BJ tables.

    More to come......

    Friday May 28th

Up at 5:00 with my coffee and paper in the living room. Downstairs by 6:00 for my morning beating. Lost at BJ, VP, slots and Carribean stud. Just as I was headed up to my room after an $800 beating I caught 4 aces for $400. It eliminated some of the bruising, but not much! It was almost 8:00 when i got up to the room and the ladies were ready and waiting. We went back to MAG and since it went over so well, we again had champange for breakfast. I added my usual steak and eggs and the girls had omlettes which they said were excellent. We talked about K's intern job this summer. She will be staying with us through August while she works. She finished her BS, but since she wants to specialize in physical therapy, she has to get her Masters. So she has another year of school and 2 more internships before she is done. It looks like all of her internships will be near us, so she will be spennding a lot of time in our house for the next year or so.

We had to plan dinner around the 7:30 show for Human Nature. We hadn't seen it and thought the girls might like it too. Our host had already set up the tickets ahead of time. The girls wanted to treat us to dinner on this last night, so we agreed on MAG since we knew it wouldn't set them back too much. We made reservations for 5:30 before we left.

Both J and K came with me to play the horses. I got them each a form and let them do their own handicapping. I gave them each $100 to play with and told them anything they had left they got to keep. J once again took the conservative route. Betting $5 or $10 on a horse to show. K on the other hand bet exactas and trifectas trying for a score. I played my usual routine of pick 3s and 4s and kept my own head above water. We went over the baseball games for the night and I played a parlay for $50 for each of us. I figured my luck wouldhave a better chance with 2 girls rooting for the same teams. My NYC friend from the day before was also there. I asked him how his luck was holding up....he looked at the girls and with a wink said....not as good as yours. I explained that they were my neices, but it went right over his head. He continued to wink and leer for the rest of the day. Of course when one of the girls won, the hugs and high 5s only confirmed his suspicions. When his wife came to collect him, they exchanged some whispers and she gave me the mandatory dirty look. The girls by now were disappointed if someone didn't disapprove of me, so this set off another round of giggling fits. At the end of the horse session both girls had doubled my investment. They each tried to give me back the stake, but I wouldn't touch it. I told them it would be bad luck to take it back and they didn't want to be the cause of me having bad luck would they? I figured it would pay for dinner, I really didn't like the idea, but my wife said it was important to them.

The girls went off the explore the unknown lands to the north. Namely the Ventian and the Wynn casinos. They went through the wax museum and took a ton of pictures of both places. When I saw them later that night they told me they wanted me to come back with them for a gondola ride to get the old ladies upset! They were having way too much fun with this!

After the horses I went off to play some BJ....no luck.....slots.....worse luck....VP.....luck left town. I went up to the room to lick my wounds and my wife was up there stashing a $2,400 JP on a dollar slot! She asked if I neeeded a loan....lol. She was having a big day. She won $400 on 4VP with 4OAK aces, another $400 on Wolf Run and then the JP ....all within a 30 minute period! She literally ran out of the room to "get em while they are hot". I reloaded from the safe....and resisted my wife's offer of a loan and headed back into the fray. I decided a conservative approach was in order. So what is a conservative approach?? I got it...... quarter spin poker at 45 credits per spin.....lol. I lost a fast hundred.....then it happened......4 Aces....14,400 credits...$3,600.....all is again right with the world! I was still behind for the trip, but from this point on it would be a "normal" trip rather than a disaster. I resisted the urge to yell Whoopie! But some wins feel better than others and this one felt really good. My wife's uncanny ability to show up whenever I have a win held up. She walked over saw the flashing lights and asked "did you do something good?". When she saw the amount I could see her mind churingin as she made the calculation of quarters to dollars. I handed over $3,000 of it for the stash and kept the rest for later.

We met in our room and looked at the pictures from the girls walking journey. My wife and I looked through all the pictures and pretended we were seeing things for the first time. We then headed over to MAG for dinner. The girls know I like oysters and my wife likes shrimp so they ordered appitizers dispite our protests. We each had steak frites, mine was roquefort and was perfect. Everyone raved about the frites....which were quite good. All 3 ladies gothe bernaise version and all loved it. Since it had become a tradition, the girls also ordered a bottle of champange....just a slightly less expensive version....lol. I tried to leave the tip, but they were having noe of it. This was their treat so I let them have it.

We went over to the IP for Human Nature. It was still only 7:00, so we played some slots for a few minutes to kill some time. We headed up and had great seats.....center cut maybe 5 rows back. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I told the girls what I knew from reading here. White guys from Australia who sing Mo Town. What a nice surprise they were. They don't just sing Mo Town....you can tell they feel it in thier souls. Very talented each and every one of them. The band is perfect for that type of music as well. Each of them very strong with thier respective instruments. Each singing voice different and perfect for one or more of the various tunes they did. They do a good job of getting the audience involed. By the end of the show, everyone is on their feet singing and clapping along. It was a great show and we will see it agian for sure. It is a real boon for the IP, the casino was crowded after the show and before. I have to think the majority of those folks would not be there if it were not for that show. If the popularity holds, I bet they will move it to a bigger HET venue. From what my host told me, it is sold out night after night.

We played some more "family roulette" next door at Harrah's. J stopped playing after losing half of her stake. K hit her numbers back to back, pressing the second time for a win of over $200. I lost my stake and so did my wife. It was interesting to watch the girls gambling personality play out over the week. They had an equally good time, but they did it very differently. J likes to milk her gambling dollars for as much play as possible, while K is looking for a score with each bet. If we had to match them, K would be closest to my wife and K's style would be closer to mine. We took a slow walk down the strip to watch the volcano at the Mirage, and then a slower walk up the strip to see the fountains. The 3 ladies were gabbing and I was just walking along behind them. M looked over her shoulder and said....shouldn't you 2 be walking with your "Sugar Daddy"?. They both laughed and droppped back to wrap me up and walk up the strip. My wife commented that it was no wonder everyone took me for a Sugar Daddy. She dropped back behind us to watch peoples reaction and got a big kick out of the dirty looks. She even stopped to chat with one group of women, agreeing with them that it was "horrible behavior on all of our parts". We made it to the Bellagio after a lot of laughs and watched 2 shows. I knew it was going to happen...and it did....the second one was time to Say Goodbye. Both girls started crying, which got my wife going...and I got something in my eye as well. It was so fitting, it was almost a sure thing that it would be the last show we would see. We took a slow walk back to the Flamingo, stopping to play a little at Paris. No one wanted the night to end, but we had an early flight, so we made our way back to our rooms about 2 AM.

The trip home was uneventful. Everyone was afraid we would get another "crooked cabbie" and have to endure one of my lectures, but no sweat there. We arrived home 30 minutes early and picked up the dog on the way home. The girls were stuck in the back with him and had to endure getting thier faces licked all the way. K settled in for the next 3 months. J stayed the night and went home the next morning. J has June off....then starts her new job on June 1st. Before they left M made us all pancakes. K commented that she was used to champagne with her breakfast, but M told her those days were over now!

Our next scheduled trip is not till next March. Since I retired the first of this month, we reserved a condo for the month of August in Saratoga. As a horse player I have always wanted to spend the summer in Saratoga. We managed a week every year, but this year I will be able to stay almost the entire meet. We may find away to sneak out to Vegas in the fall too....you never know!!

Thoroughly enjoyed your TR. Sounds like everyone had a great time.
Nice score with the big win to bring you back. Seems being an uncle with two nieces agrees with you! You played the parts to the hilt. What fun!
I agree with you about Human Nature helping get the crowds to the IP. I know I had not set foot inside for ten years until we saw them this past January (and again this May!). Glad you folks had fun.

No we never got back to the Venetian. They were really into the joke and thought it would be fun, the the last couple of days just got away from us.
