    My Trip Report

I posted this on another message board, but since I've enjoyed so many reports on this site I thought I'd post it here too.

At the moment, it's not quite finished, but it's close.

So last year we hit Vegas four times. I started four reports. Finished nary a one. So this one is getting posted no matter how late it is. And it still isn't finished, but it's in the works.

It’s Vegas baby. Oh happy day.

We got up Saturday morning and arrived at the airport about an hour and half before departure. Checked our luggage with the skycap. Scooted through security. No puffer box or strip search. Score. Grabbed breakfast tacos and waited for our plane.

Using SW early bird service we were A17 and A18, Z of course was 17. She doesn’t like to lose. LOL.

Three hour flight to Vegas. I sat next to a fella who is a construction manager for Clark County. Very interesting to me since I am a construction law paralegal. I learned a good bit about construction around Vegas and the aquifer while sipping my first bloody mary of the trip. Fascinating. Nice guy.

We made the strategic decision to check all our bags and sit toward the front of the plane. That way, upon landing, we can quickly scoot off the plane.

Oh yeah. Across the aisle from us was a young man who apparently either didn’t hear the pre-flight instructions because he was listening to his i-whatever or didn’t understand them. About halfway or more through the flight he stands up and walks to the front of the plane and stands waiting for the current restroom occupant to vacate. There are no attendants around at that point and he stands in front of the plane door. Which he then turns around to stare at. Yeah. Z and I had already exchanged looks, when Mark said something about that guy making him uncomfortable. I had already unlatched my seatbelt and was going to go say something to the guy like, “Hey. Do you realize you’re making people uncomfortable by standing up here alone and staring at the door? If you don’t stop I’m going to stab you in the neck with my Pilot pen.†Something like that.

At that point he turned around and we could see what he was doing. And I pressed the service button above my head. An attendant appeared just after the guy went in the restroom. She immediately knew what we were concerned about and waited for him to come out of the restroom. She spoke to him for a minute or two. I’m assuming she read him the riot act and rightfully so if she did.

Okay, enough of that. We survived the flight without having to stab a fellow traveler. Score.

Plane lands in Vegas and comes to a stop. But not at the gate. WTF? “Uh, ladies and gentlemen, there is another plane at our gate and we’re going to have to wait.†What!?! Oh, heck no. Just open the door and we’ll find our way. Where’s the dumb waiting for the bathroom guy? Let’s send him up front.

Okay, we had to wait about 20 minutes or so before our plane could get to the gate. A first for us. We run off the plane and to the baggage claim area. There’s the Presidential limo guy with our sign. And we wait for our luggage. And wait. There’s Mark, the construction guy. And we wait. Dang it. Finally our flight appears on a baggage belt sign and before you know it we have our bags. Yay.

We follow the driver to the limo. Receive our compulsory roses and more importantly, cheap champagne. Score. Nice drive to Encore. Driver was quiet. Mountains were snow-covered. Very pretty.

We polish off most the champagne and hop out of the limo. Five bucks to the bellman and we head to check-in. Clerk wants to put us on the fifth floor. Uh, no. How about panoramic suite? $20 a night extra is no problem. She says she can’t guarantee what kind of room we’ll end up in, but we should have a room about 3pm. No problem.

We hit the casino to say hello to the machines. Work our way through Encore and Wynn, out to the strip. Across the road to TI. Lunch will be at the Isla bar. No seats at the bar and we decide we’ll wait. We play some slots waiting for bar seats to open up. Within the hour there are two seats at the bar available. I think it was around 1:30pm by this time.

We ordered a beer and margarita. Nachos. Two orders of chicken quesadillas. Food to me wasn’t as good as the last time we were there. The bartender said they were out of Tecate so Z settled for a Negro Modelo. I ordered a muddled strawberry margarita with Don Julio silver. Bartender said she wouldn’t be able to comp that but their house tequila was el Jimador (or something similar) which is not bad tequila so I went with that. Last time here there was no problem comping the Don Julio, but anyway the margarita was excellent. We enjoyed lunch and played VP at the bar.

We then walked over to the Fashion Show Mall to visit the ABC store. Bought two six packs of water and a bottle of wine. About 3pm we got a call that our room was ready. 53rd floor, south facing. Score.

We went to a specified line to get our room keys. Only took a minute. Then upstairs to the room. Called for our bags. They arrived quickly. We tipped the lady who brought us the bags generously and she offered to fill our ice bucket. Sure.

We spent the rest of the evening enjoying the gorgeous view from the room. I brought my iPod nano with me and we plugged it into the bedside docking station and enjoyed some sweet tunes with our view. At some point I went down to the Society Café and ordered some sloppy joe sliders and sweet potato fries to bring back to the room. Dinner in bed and goodnight. Day one in the books.

Up early on Sunday, but not as early as usual for us in Vegas although we did get to see the sun rise. Today we planned to go downtown. Let’s see if we make it.

It’s our habit to pack a small coffeemaker and supplies for our Vegas trips. I like coffee when I wake up. Z is patient. Me, not so much. So I was up first and turned on the coffee.

A short hour or so later we were out the door and playing. We played our way through Encore, Wynn, Palazzo and Venetian. It was time for something to eat so we grabbed a cab outside Venetian and headed to downtown. We asked the cab line guy what was the quickest route. He said the freeway. Let me just say, I hate Vegas freeways. I have seen my life flash before my eyes more than once in a cab on a Vegas freeway.

At any rate, it wasn’t long before we were deposited at Main Street Station. Lunch would be at the Triple 7 Brewpub. We grabbed a couple of seats at the bar. There was a playoff game on the big screens.

Z ordered a house brew. I think I had a glass of crappy wine. We ordered the garlic fries and an appetizer platter of assorted cooked meats. It did the job.

Seated next to us were a couple of guys from Nebraska eyeing our meat platter. This started a conversation during which one fella told us his kid was a big UT fan. Then his friend proceeded to tell us what a wuss Colt McCoy was. Uh, no. You’re wrong. That guy didn’t know how close he came to getting knocked on his keister by Z. Lucky for him I was sitting in-between them. Not to mention Z was in vacation mode.

After lunch we wandered out onto Fremont Street. I can’t remember exactly where we stopped but I do know I got killed at craps at Binion’s. Brutal. And it was $5 minimum. Yeesh. I’m pretty sure we stopped and played at a few other casinos, playing our way down to El Cortez where we planned to have dinner later.

We’ve been to ElCo a few times and I’ve never noticed just how bizarre the clientele is. I’ve noticed the nuclear waste yellow windows and the good cocktail service. But not just how many truly odd looking characters are hanging out inside. And outside is whole new level of odd.

We played for a good bit at ElCo. Z likes a particular machine there. Then we just hopped from game to game. Played our way across the casino. We didn’t even realize there was a “nicer†side of the casino with newer and cleaner machines.

By way of example of the curious nature of the clientele, Z visited the ladies room and on her way back to where we were sitting, a fella playing a slot machine meowed at her. Yes, meowed. Hmm. For no explicable reason. Sitting right behind him was a guy who looked for all the world like he had just escaped a maximum security asylum. Seriously. And he kept looking at me. Willies!

Not long after that we got up and went into Flame Steakhouse. Cool place. Very old school. This is not Craftsteak, Carnevino or anything of the sort. Subdued. Quiet. Soft music. Big booths. Silk flower arrangements. Kind of cheesy, but in a sweet way. Attentive, but not pretentious service. And big screen tv’s scattered around the restaurant which surprised me.

Z ordered a steak and a baked potato. I ordered shrimp alfredo and garlic spinach. Both of our dinners were very good. I had a nice glass of wine and Z stuck to hydrating with water. We had an ACG coupon that took $25 off the tab. Even better.

We left ElCo and headed back up Fremont Street. As we were walking, I was very concerned with the condition of my jacket pocket. There was mint dust from a tin of Altoids I had rattling around in my pocket. I was trying to get Z to understand the dire circumstances in which I found myself. She however was busy scouting the ne’er do wells amongst whom we found ourselves on the street. Z tells me I have lousy situational awareness. If this is true, I am unaware of it.

We made it safely back to relative safety of the Fremont Street cover. I don’t remember exactly where we were, but I know we were on a street planning to walk to the front of the casino to catch a cab back to the strip. To our surprise a cab driver pulled up and asked if we wanted to get in. I’m pretty sure this is a no-no, but what the heck, we got in.

We asked him to take us back to Encore, but to take surface streets. He was happy to oblige and it wasn’t long before we were back in Steve Wynn’s neighborhood.

I think we went up to the room at this point. Next thing we knew it was the next morning. Monday. Time to meet City Center.

So we were up early. Coffee and clothes. Out the door. Once again we played our way through Encore, Wynn, Palazzo and Venetian. We stopped at the Bouchon bakery in the Venetian for two coffees and something to eat. I think I had some kind of sandwich and Z had the focaccia of the day.

Anyway, we took our coffees and food outside onto the steps above where the gondolas were parked. We had our breakfast and Z pointed out that one of the gondolas was full of water. No kidding. It sure was. By the way, the gondolas appear to have small electric motors and a tiny propeller. In case you ever wondered. I did. I had imagined they were on little underwater tracks like the rides in Disneyland, but apparently not. You are at the mercy of a trolling motor (those of you familiar with bass boats know what I’m talking about).

After we ate, we got up and walked south down the strip. We stopped to check out the snake man in front of O’Sheas. This is the guy who put himself inside a large (not nearly large enough) glass box with live snakes. I don’t like snakes. From the look on his face, neither did one of the security guys standing around. He was keeping an eye on them snakes. And there were a bunch of them.

One mean little bugger snake went skittering across the floor right between the snake man’s feet. Then over to the corner and up a tree where he managed to extend his body about 80% into the air, leaving about six inches of himself on the tree. Fascinating. Good to know a snake can do that. Z thought so too. Now put some legs on that snake and call it a lizard and no way Z would have been standing there. And Z has jumped out of planes. I’m just saying. Some things are worth fearing. For me it’s snakes. For Z, lizards. Who has situational awareness now? LOL.

On we trekked up the strip. Today we were checking into the Monte Carlo to get free food and free play. We crossed the street and eventually walked into Bellagio. Checked out the conservatory and walked to the back and the tram station.

We road the tram to Monte Carlo and checked in. First we got in the rather long check in line and Z pointed out an Invited Guest sign. Sure, why not. I went over there since I was there on an offer. Nice lady checked us in and said she had a room ready. It was early, maybe about noon. We collected our room keys and went to the Players Club desk to have our free play and food credit activated.

Then up to the room to check it out. We’ve never stayed at Monte Carlo or been in a room there. And, based on the room we saw, we hope we never will. Sad little room. Worn bedspread and linens with “pilled†fabric.

We sat for a few minutes and considered our good fortune at getting a good rate at Encore. We drank the two free bottles of water in the room and chugged two 5 Hr Energy’s. And were out the door.

Dinner was to be at Brand Steakhouse so we decided to play at Monte Carlo for a while. First we turned our $50 free play into $80. Then we played some video poker for a bit and I landed a straight flush. More random slots and then sat down at rapid roulette. The dealer was flat and so was our luck. Yeesh. So we decided to go check out Aria’s casino.

We weren’t sure if we should take the tram back to Crystals in order to access Aria. The answer to that was decidedly no. When you take the exit from Monte Carlo’s casino to the tram station, turn left. Go down the escalator. There is Aria’s entrance. If you go to the Monte Carlo tram stop, you’re actually closer to the Aria casino than you are to the Monte Carlo. You do not have to go to the Crystals stop to get to the Aria casino.

Aria’s casino was indeed dark as reported by others. Not only was there limited lighting, but the finishes are dark. Dark wood, etc. At one point Z tried to read something on a slot machine and couldn’t due to the low light.

Here’s the other thing people talk about…being “forced†to play higher limits on slots. What we saw was that on many of the penny machines, you do not have the option to choose the number of lines you want to play. Instead of having two rows of buttons, one selecting the number of lines and one selecting the number of credits per line, you get to choose $.50 a spin, $1 a spin, $2 a spin, etc. We played here for a while, including a Sex and the City game which we’d never had the pleasure of playing before. Z got the bonus and spanked Miranda for $38. Excellent. Fun game.

We left Aria and headed back to Monte Carlo for an early dinner at what has become our favorite restaurant in Vegas, Brand Steakhouse. We took two seats at the bar and ordered. Wine for me. Martini for Z. We didn’t recognize the bartender so we asked about the bartenders we had become accustomed to seeing at Brand. Always stellar service. We were told our two favorites have been nicked by a restaurant at City Center. Well dang. Okay, probably not “nicked.†I’m guessing MGM Mirage has decided to send some of their best staff to the new joint.

After wiping away a tear, we ordered dinner. Flat bread pizza to start. Mmmm. A big honking bone-in rib-eye, mac n cheese, truffled creamed spinach and potatoes gratin. Oh my. We split the steak between us. When it arrived, it looked like something off the Flintstones. The bone was about two feet long. Awesome. For some reason the lady sitting to my right at the bar was offended by that gorgeous steak. Fella with her explained it was a “cowboy steak.†Maybe we should have offended her further by picking it up and gnawing on it. But alas, we were too full. Dinner was really, really good. Not just the steak, but the sides. Mmmm.

We waddled out of there and rolled to the tram station. Rode back to the Bellagio and walked our way back to Encore in the very crisp night air. Felt great. By the time we got back to the hotel, we felt refreshed and not quite so stuffed. The elevators didn’t even groan getting us up to our floor.

Tuesday morning we were up and playing our way through Encore, Wynn and Palazzo as had become our morning habit this trip. Lunchtime was approaching and I was getting hungry, my appetite being spurred on by the very nice cocktail service of bloody marys and white russians. Vegas breakfast.

While Z was occupied with one of her favorite slot machines at Palazzo I walked over to check out Dos Caminos and see when they opened. They were open and no one was in the place. So I returned to Z and played on the machine next to her until she was ready to eat. My machine was Lucky Lemmings. I like to play it just for the YIP YIP of the lemmings. I’m easily amused.

We walked back to Dos Caminos and took our place at the bar. We’d eaten there once before for dinner and were not enamored. Music was too young and too loud. Service bordered on pretentious. Food was good, but not stellar. Our experience at lunch was much improved. Music was appropriately mexican-ish and not blaring. The girl behind the bar was great. Very personable and attentive without being annoying. We ordered queso fundido and chicken quesadillas. Both were superb. We skipped the fancy schmancy margaritas we ordered the first visit and just went with top shelf margaritas on the rocks. Actually, I think Z had a mexican beer, but I enjoyed my excellente margarita.

We finished lunch and walked over to the Mirage where we played for a good while. We almost always do well at the Mirage and we did again this time. At least at slots. Z made an accurate observation this trip and that is we rarely do well at the low rent places and we do pretty well at the high-end joints. Go figure. We've played a good bit downtown and never really won much. Once inside the Mirage I went over to a bustling craps table and again, had my generous backside handed to me. Seems the craps theme for this trip was..set a point, roll a seven, repeat. Ah well, I have more fun playing slots with Z anyway. And play we did.

At one point we were sitting in the middle two spots of a row of four Life of Luxury machines when I learned a lesson in keeping your eyes on your own paper. There was a woman sitting next to me who was dressed to the nines and was speaking something other than English and unrecognizable to me. Her husband (I’m assuming) would stop by periodically and chat with her. She was hitting max bet every spin. This means that when she got the L of L bonus round she automatically won the progressive and then won some other amount when she picked the gem. The woman on the other side of Z was a Canadian if her accent told the story and was the polar opposite of max bet lady.

She was in a group of four young people, one appeared to be her husband, and all were watching her play. She was playing one penny at a time. These are multi line games where you can choose the number of lines and bet per line. I saw her betting one penny and I developed a tic. In my very best Rain Man, I whispered to Z, “She’s not doing it right.†LOL. Z gave me the Z-eye. Keep your eyes on your own paper. So the penny lady had a dollar in the machine and merrily played a penny at a time. She and her cohorts animatedly discussed the results of her spins. And she actually got bonus rounds. No chance for the progressive, but she’d pick a gem and she’d win either 1, 2 or 3 cents.

Eventually she built her balance up to $1.27 and announced, “Oh, look at that. I have way more than a dollar. Should I cash out? That’s how they get ya hooked.†Z and I were heartily amused. Awesome. That line would be repeated many times this trip, “That’s how they get ya hooked.†Even better when you add a Canadian accent.

Her husband had gone off for a bit to play something else and returned defeated. “I played a Survivor game. I thought I’d do well on it ‘cause I like that show. Had to play a nickel at a time!†He was dejected. Poor fella. The wife told him he could play blackjack but he couldn’t lose more than $20. I’m guessing these folks don’t spend much time in casinos.

And all that to say, these are the moments I love in Vegas. The incredible vast cross section of humanity all having a good time. Or at least most having a good time. Max-bet lady actually looked grumpy. And bet-a-penny lady was having a blast. As Z says, "Bet a penny, split your tens....enjoy yourself...and ignore the people around you. Especially if it's me." LOL. And I would add, if you can't ignore the people around you, at least enjoy them.

Last June, at this same bank of L of L machines, Z and I were playing when I got a chance for the sapphire progressive. This was the first time I had ever seen the sapphire pop up. I was so excited, I jumped up and knocked over my stool. Thankfully it was early morning and no one else was in the aisle with us. I needed room to think. Which to pick. Which to pick. Pick, Got it right! I don’t even know what I won. Something close to $300, but it wasn’t the money, it was the winning. Z and I high-fived, hugged, and I humped the machine. I think I even humped the stool. We were laughing hysterically and I looked over and saw two bemused security women watching us.

This however was nothing compared to what Z did. In September we were playing at Red Rock. That trip we rented a car and visited some off strip properties including Red Rock. We were playing L of L when during the main bonus, Z got a L of L bonus round. Emerald. Z spanked it hard. And then, another L of L bonus, Ruby popped up. Z spanked it too. And then, unbelievably, the Sapphire. Oh my. Could she do it? Was it possible? Oh man, oh man, oh man. She did. Z owned the Sapphire. Won $600 on a 30 cent spin. And won it the hard way. Three correct gem picks in one bonus round. Crazy. There was some hooting and hollering going on at Red Rock. We are still seeking the elusive Diamond progressive. I’ve seen it once. We know it exists. LOL.

Okay, back to this trip. Eventually we moved on to other machines. We ran into the Hitchcock games outside the entrance to the Mirage buffet. We’d never played these before and had a good time.

Since we were there, we ate dinner at the Mirage buffet. Good as always. We rolled out of the Mirage and stopped outside to watch the volcano erupt. Then walked over to TI, the tram was out of order or we probably would have trammed it.

Inside TI we played some more slots. Z was having fun on a hot hot super respin game with paws. I don’t care if it is a hot hot super respin game, I’m still going to yell HOT HOT PENNY when the fireball guy shows up. It’s what I do. Anyway, I wandered over and played a megabucks game. Have to do that at least once a trip. Go for the gusto. Then we hit these two games that we had played at Encore before. One is a shark game and one is a dragon game. Z’s shark game was incredibly loud. She took to blocking the speakers when the shark showed up. Fun games though. Then we found two Time Machine games. Hadn’t played them before so we sat down for a bit. I can tell you that you cannot beat the t-rex with the stick. I’m just saying.

At some point we wandered back to Encore and up to bed. Tomorrow, Wednesday, was our last day of trip. Sigh.

I'm working on our last day and some general notes about this trip. I'm just slow. When you're over 40 (pushing 50 even) it's the remembering that's the hard part. Fortunately for me, Z has a great memory. I check with her before I post and she corrects the details. I blame my fuzzy Vegas memory on the cocktail service... "Do we have a round of drinks coming or did we already drink them?"

ROFL excellent TR , love your writing style and sense of humour

Hey what Canadian accent! I'm Canadian and don't have one , eh! Your trips are similiar to mine, wake up , shower/dress, out the door to the casino floor for coffee, and then play our way to breakfast ....then meander along the strip , and play until lunch, and repeat until dinner..... we like to hotel hop and play the different machines and check out the different hotels and attractions, usually pop into the Fashion Show Mall or Miracle Mile Shops too, not big shoppers but wander thru , never know what deals are out there ...... enjoy the drink service ... people watch , too

Now, see, that's how they get ya hooked!! :evillaugh

I know trip reports are kind of a pain in the ass, but I really appreciate the effort and time you're taking. My wife laughs at me because I'm constantly making voice notes on my blackberry for a trip report later. They're a pain, but years from now, it's nice to go back and read your reports and reminisce.

Take your time. Love it so far and we can wait. To a point. Then you're in trouble.

    Get to writing!! :)
