    My Trip Report

From now on I will be keeping a journal with me to write day by day....it never fails...I get home and cannot remember all the details for my trip report!! This is a long one, hope you enjoy!!

Day 1: We left the house at 5am, hoping to make the 725am flight as standby (non-revenue) passengers. The flights were all packed for the day so we didn’t make that one and had no expectations to make anything else until later on in the afternoon/evening. However, it was raining here and apparently there were missed connections because the 920am flight was delayed and my daughter and I made that one….which actually left at 1125….and my husband and my son made the 1100 flight, which actually left at 1140! We got into Vegas exactly about 10 minutes apart so that worked well. My mom and dad decided not to try to get out that same day, since all the following flights were oversold….they put themselves on the list for the first flight out on Saturday.

When we got in, we took the Bell Trans to NYNY. To my surprise there was no line to check in. I didn’t do the $20 trick because we had the kids and it really wasn’t a big deal for us to get an upgrade. But, I did ask for a good view. We were given a room in the Chrysler Building on the 34th floor. Yes, it was high up but we didn’t have a view of anything but behind the hotel. It was ok I guess. The next important thing to do was to get something to eat. We grabbed some pizza at Sirrico’s. 6 slices of pizza (hubby and son both ate 2 a piece) and 4 cokes was close to $40. Gone are the days of eating cheap in Vegas! I didn’t like it, but I was hungry so I ate it anyways.

Since my parents were not due in until day 2, we wouldn’t be doing much gambling on the first day. So, it was mainly filled with walking and shopping. My son had been dying to visit the Houdini shop on the 2nd floor so that was our next stop. He watched a few magic tricks and showed me all the stuff he wanted, to which my response was….yeah…um….maybe later….haha. We then walked over to MGM to visit the lions. One of the females was sitting on top of the plexiglass eating the biggest rawhide bone I have ever seen. We went around the corner and my husband said “oh look, you can get your picture with a lion cub!†My daughter, the animal lover of course said “I wanna do it!!â€. So….$25 later we had a picture of the 2 kids with their hands on the back of an absolutely beautiful little baby lion. I must say, only in Vegas!

Next thing was on to M&M world…the kids liked it there but the incessant smell of chocolate was getting to me! We watched the little 3-D movie and that was cute. What happened next nearly caused me to have a heart attack. We told the kids that they could each fill up a SMALL bag of M&Ms…so they could pick their colors. Each of them had MAYBE ¼ of a lb in their bags. We went to check out and the lady says “That’ll be $22.50†…..WHAT??? for M&Ms?? Yes, my heart almost stopped. I could not believe how much they charged us. But, it IS Vegas right? Ha, maybe next time we should look at the cost first….Then we walked down to the Miracle Mile shops and walked around there for a while. My son bought a small magic trick at Steve Wyrick’s theater and my daughter saw a jacket in the GAP that she wanted and that I would never hear the end of for the rest of the trip.

By this time the kids were getting hungry so we went to Rainfoest Café for dinner. We have one here in Dallas and the kids really like it. The food is always pretty good, even though it is expensive. It’s much more expensive in Vegas – a kid’s meal is around $5.99 in Dallas, where as in Vegas the same meal is $9.99. My son is only 11 but he is the same size as me so he no longer orders off of the kids menu. Luckily a kids meal is just fine for my daughter still!

It got kinda late and we had been up since 5am Dallas time so everyone was dragging after dinner….especially ME! I had been sick to my stomach for a few days and it was only getting worse. It totally wore me out for the first 2 days of our trip. I must’ve picked up a bug somewhere. My husband played a few slots…won about $100 at the Star Wars machine (which he continued to win on the entire trip) and he played some slots while I went upstairs and got the kids ready for bed. After my husband came back up to the room, the kids were asleep so I told him I was going to go downstairs, get a soda and smoke a cigarette. I brought $20 with me to play while I was smoking. I was so tired….I saw down at one machine…nothing. Moved to another one….nothing. Cashed out with $5.00 left and the ticket only printed half way. No other machines would take it. I then had to stand in a very long line at the cashier to get my $5. I got it and the Star Wars machine was right there so I played the last $5 and got nothing…again. I walked off without my soda, which I just bought so about 100 steps later I realized it and ran back to get it. Stumbled half-asleep to the elevator and got off on the wrong floor and put my key in the wrong door. Embarrassed, I ran back to the elevator and finally got back to our room. I took a shower then fell asleep and slept like a rock all night!

Day 2: My husband woke up extremely early for Vegas and went down to get coffee. It took me and the kids a little longer but we made it out around 830am and headed to MGM Grand to get a one way monorail ticket. That cost $20 for the 4 of us so it was the ONLY time we rode it the whole trip. It used to have tickets in which you could share rides but not anymore. They are all single tickets now. We got off at Harrah’s and headed across to the Forum Shops. Nothing was open so we had breakfast at Planet Hollywood. Now, we ate at PH in Orlando and the food was terrible so I was really afraid of what we were going to have. The breakfast here was actually really good and the prices were good too. It was one of the cheapest meals we had the whole time. My stomach was still acting up so I just had a bagel but my husband and the kids really liked what they had. We walked around the shops for a while…went into FAO Swartz and saw the fountain show over by the Cheesecake Factory. I got a margarita at Fat Tuesdays after breakfast (haha). We walked through Cesar’s Palace casino so hubby and I could smoke. He won a few bucks at All that Glitters….whereas I don’t ever win anything in that casino so I choose not to donate my money there.

All through the morning I was getting updates from my mom back home and finding out that they had not made the first 3 flights out of DFW due to the flights being overbooked. Finally they made the flight that was around 12pm and that would put them into Vegas around 5 or so. We were beginning to think they were not going to make it out at all, but I was so relieved when I found out that they had!

Lunch was at the Mirage – Carnegie Deli. I had my regular, a knish with mustard…yum! The kids had hamburgers and I can’t even remember what my husband had. After lunch we walked around and took turns on a few of the machines …. Trading off with the kids. I made about $30 on the Wizard of Oz machine…I’m so addicted to it! We went back to PH Miracle Mile shops because my daughter wanted to see that damn GAP jacket again…we gave her the chance to get it but then she changed her mind….for now. We bought crocs for myself, my son and my husband. My old pair of croc flip flops broke a few weeks ago and my son’s and hubby’s were worn out. They were all on sale for 20% off and we ended up saving $30 total. I started the morning out in a pair of wedge sandals that I have had for years. But by this time of the day, they had formed blisters on both feet where the straps were. I was so happy when I was able to take them off!

After this, it was time to head back to NYNY. We walked on the side of the street where they are building the city center. I was amazed at what the buildings look like. I can’t wait to actually see it finished. I have to say however, that area of the strip really seems to have gotten dirtier and nastier than I’ve ever experienced it. Maybe it is because for the last few years we have stayed at Mirage or TI, but the panhandlers seemed to be out in droves….more so than I remember and they stand in the construction walkway and are right on top of you everywhere you go. It was not like that down at mid-strip. They seem to be taking advantage of all of the construction because people have no other option on where they have to walk to get from one place to another. I just told the kiddos….look straight ahead, hold my hand and keep walking.

We finally got back to the hotel and it was time to rest!! I tell you, traveling with the kids takes so much more out of me than when it’s just me and hubby. A little while later, my mom called and they were waiting to check in!! We went down to meet them. I walked them up to their room with the kids while Hubby stayed downstairs and played a little on the slots. The room that mom and dad got was awesome. It was in the New Yorker tower on the 11th floor with a view of MGM and the rollercoaster in front….almost panoramic because there were 2 walls with windows and it was a corner room. Very large too. Mom was paying on average about $89 a night for the room with her players card offers.

We all went back downstairs to find my husband, who luckily had not lost any money but broke even. We walked around a little and then everyone got hungry. My mom got a 20% discount coupon upon check in so we ate at America. This was the first of 2 times we ate there and it was really good food and great service. We had a really friendly waitress. My stomach started acting up again and I was in and out of the bathroom towards the end of dinner. Since it was national “Coming Out Day†on Sunday, this was the first day we really noticed a ton of people “celebratingâ€. There was a couple of women making out in the bathroom after my mom came in with my daughter. Luckily they stopped what they were doing before my daughter came out of the stall. Let me tell you, we saw some very interesting looking people there over the weekend! The kids didn’t seem to notice so I didn’t have any crazy questions to answer thank goodness!

After that, my mom and dad took the kids upstairs with them to play games so that hubby and I could play some slots. I don’t remember winning much..I think I broke even again. Hubby won a little at Blackjack by the end of the night. Another early night for us, as we were still really tired!!

Stay tuned for Days 3 and 4….our luck turns around and more good eats!! I plan on posting pics too.

I forgot to mention that on day 1...that night, we went over to the Luxor because my son is a fan of Criss Angel. He got a shirt with his name on it and liked seeing the bikes that they have there of his. The Luxor has gotten pretty icky however, I don't think I will ever stay there. I overheard another lady saying that the rooms were worse than motel 6!

I guess I should've called them porn-slappers? I dunno, I know we just come to expect that on the strip but the MGM/NYNY end is over-ridden with them....sometimes 10 of them in a group at a time. I hardly saw any down by Mirage/Wynn/Venetian etc....

I was in Vegas a few weeks ago and couldn't believe how bad they were! I saw them try to hand these "business" cards to women with children and to the elderly, its ridiculous!

Great TR so far. Looking forward to reading the rest. And now I want to get my pic with the lion cub too! We'll be there in 4 weks. I'm hoping the cub isn't too big by then. Thanks for posting. :)

I don't get the big attraction of the M&M store. I was in there one time. Lots of pretty M&Ms and high prices. I would have bought a bunch of yellow for a Xmas cookie/candie I make but it was too hot to walk all over the strip with the purchase. Didn't realize they were sooo expensive either. But that sounds like a lot of $$$ if it was over $20 for only a pound or less? Ridiculous.

    day 3 -- finally!

Sorry this took so long -- been so busy at work!!

    Forgotten Day 2 adventures:

Things I forgot to mention on the first post…..After eating at Carnegie Deli, we took the kids inside the Beatles store by the Love theater. I saw Love last trip and LOVED it. Because I play the soundtrack in the car all the time and my other Beatles CDs…(I’m a little bit of a fanatic) my kids also love the Beatles. My son got a deck of cards there in the shop and my daughter got a little pin for her backpack. While we were checking out, my eyes homed in on the “stage†they have set up with Beatles rockband ready to play… We have that at home and so I just couldn’t resist. I grabbed my son and said “Play with me!!†we went up there and 5-starred “I Me Mineâ€, my favorite Rockband song!

I also forgot to mention that after dinner, we went and saw (AGAIN) the 3-D movie at M&M world. I just had to show my parents the candy that cost me $22 and my daughter wanted them to see the movie. I think I took a 10 minute nap this time!

Day 3: Got up kinda early again…around 8am…hubby went down for coffee as usual while me and the kids took our showers and got ready to go out. For some reason my husband decided he wanted to play a machine or two in between getting his coffee and getting my coffee….so by the time he got back to Starbucks there was a huge line that he didn’t FEEL like waiting in. Really? I cannot start the morning without coffee….so when the kids finished up I took them down with me and got a bagel and a coffee. I waited in line. The kiddos got donuts at Stadium Snacks (Krispy Kreme) and a cinnamon roll at the little bakery inside NYNY…..along with 2 hot chocolates.

My parents came down and met us and we were off again!! We planned on walking a lot today because those monorail passes are just too expensive! Dad and I had to make yet another stop in Walgreens….I think we went in there about 5 times this trip. You know, I overhead the lady say they had the cheapest cigarettes in the country! I paid $5.20 for a pack of Camel No. 9s. I pay $5.33 here at the Walgreens at home. First stop was Paris. I love that casino. It is so pretty and the shop area is nice. We went in the casino end and walked to the shops. I saw a Wizard of Oz slot….grabbed my mother and ran!! She played about $40 and didn’t win anything. She didn’t even hit a bonus and I was disappointed for her. You have to know my mother, she LOVES the Wizard of Oz. I sat down with a $20…betting 60 cents at a time and I walked away with a $40 profit after hitting Glenda twice. At least she got to watch the fun! The lady next to us hit the flying monkeys bonus twice.

We walked through the Paris shops and we were looking for some place to eat a late breakfast/early lunch. We decided to start making our way over to Carnegie Deli again because mom and dad like it there and we know they have good food. BUT, on the way we had to stop at the giant slot machines that sit right between Paris and Ballys. On one side it is a Bally’s slot and on the other it is a Paris slot. Hubby, Mom and Dad were busy feeding dollar bills into the Bally’s slot. I told the kids to plant their butts on the fountain while I took $4 over to the Paris slot. Put them all in….1st spin, nothing….2nd spin, nothing….3rd spin….got a couple of Paris symbols and some bars….the machine stopped working and started beeping like crazy. Of course everyone started gathering around now and I asked my husband to go find someone because I thought the machine was broken and I still had a dollar in there!! A sweet lady from the casino came over and said “Honey, you just won $150!†I said “I thought it was broken!†It wasn’t a big win and would’ve been much more if I had been playing max $5 but I’ll take a $147 profit any day off of 3 dollars!

Now since I have only started to actually WIN on some slots since Mom and Dad got there, I’m convinced my mom is my lucky charm.

We walked over to the Mirage for our brunch. My stomach was feeling much better on this day so I decided to order actual food….I had the mushroom and onion omelet…my dad and my husband both had omelets…my son had lunch, another burger and my mom had matzah ball soup and a knish. We had the worst waiter in the history of waiters. He did not speak much English, but that wasn’t the problem. I think he was new and had no idea what he was doing but nobody was helping him. It was extremely busy – a Sunday….and a football Sunday at that. It was packed and he had several big tables. He got our order mixed up a few times and then sent us orange juice when nobody ordered any. When he split our bills up, he got that wrong too. It was comical, to say the least. The food was really good though. I hate it when they make the portions so big I cannot finish it. Then I feel like I’m wasting my money. I could only eat half of it!

After we ate, I ran over to the WOZ machine and played a little. My husband went there first and held a spot for me. He won $75 while he was waiting! After I sat down, I won about $10….the kids were getting antsy so I didn’t stay there long. From there we took the little tram to TI where I wanted to play a few slots with my Dad. He quickly lost $30 in a few different machines but then put a $5 in a dollar machine and won it all back and doubled it..cashed out at $60. I won a few $$ here and there.

Next was the Wynn so we headed over there. Now, I love playing at the Wynn but this time it seemed very uncomfortable with kids. No kids anywhere. So, mom and dad and my husband played a little while I stayed with the kids in the shops area. Nobody won anything. I played about $20 and I didn’t win anything either. This was the first time I had lost money at the Wynn….I usually walk out ahead!

Next stop was the Palazzo. Their Fall artsy- thing display is really pretty inside the shops area. We made our way into the Venetian shops and stopped for some water and cokes. The kids liked it in there, the people were dressed up and singing in the main area and the white statue lady was there. My daughter got a picture with her. My son got a magic trick inside the Houdini shop there.

We came out of the Venetian and Amber was dying to go back to the Miracle Mile shops for that jacket inside the GAP. Since we were still at the same amount of money that we were when we left the hotel that morning (thanks to our winnings here and there), we said she could get it.

So…we went there but they were out of her size in the one she wanted so she ended up getting a different one. I was just relieved that I could finally quit hearing about that damn jacket! Now to share some winnings with our son – he had seen a funny little puppet at FAO Schwartz inside the Forum shops. It was very inexpensive in my opinion so we headed back over there for that. By this time my feet were killing me and I was ready to go back to the hotel! After the puppet stop, we crossed back over the street so we could stop in at Casino Royale for a couple of $1 margaritas. Anyone who visits Vegas must do this at least once during your trip. As most of us know, they are not the most potent Margaritas but they are really refreshing!

Now refueled…..we headed back. Made our way through the sea of porn slappers…trash, beer cans and beer bottles to get back to the hotel. I could not believe how nasty and dirty the area was over by the Harley place and all those little t-shirt shops. None of the crap was cleaned up from the night before and it looked just horrible. I’d never seen it like that before.

Crossed over at Monte Carlo…..one more street and thank goodness…we were back!! I needed to go up and change clothes. As we walked through the casino, hubby heard the announcement that they were doing a BlackJack tournament with a $20 buy in. I think 1st place paid $1200 or something like that. Well, of course he wanted in. So he went to do that, Dad went to play some machines and I was going to go change my shoes. Mom and the kids were coming with me but halfway there I realized I forgot my key with my husband. So, we went up to mom’s room for a little bit before I went to get my key from hubby….changed shoes and took some time to rest while he did the tournament.

He was doing really good until close to the end when one guy started throwing everything out there and winning. Unfortunately we didn’t win anything, but it was fun.

Dinner was at Gonzalez y Gonzalez, which I really liked. Mom just had the soup and there must’ve been something in it that she is allergic to. After that she started feeling sicker and sicker. She woke up the next morning with swollen lips and cheeks. She took benadryl all night. My parents watched the kids a while as we played. Since mom was feeling sick hubby went up to get them and Dad came back down with me to play a little blackjack.

He started with $50, I started with $100. In a matter of like 35 minutes, he won $160 and I lost all of mine. I couldn’t win a damn hand to save my life. All I got were crappy cards and never saw anything greater than 16. There was this one guy sitting there who would not be quiet. He kept chatting it up with the dealer who would stall dealing out the cards so that she could talk to him. I was like “C’Mon, shut up and let her freakkin deal!!!!†I hate that!! To top it off, 3 young blonde girls sat down with not a clue how to play. I could just tell as they started pulling money out of their purses….I whispered to my Dad “Oh no!†They were hitting on 17s and staying on 12s versus face cards – it was painful to watch and I softly said what they should be doing under my breath….even though I was losing, I still know how to play basic strategy. My cards were just terrible. They did cause my dad to lose a few hands and at that point he walked.

He hands me a $20 and says, let’s go play some slots. Dad went to the machine I had won at the night before (Tikki Torches – I had won like $90 on it during the bonus round) and played it, but chose a different game. I played Tikki Torches on one a few seats down. My $20 went away quickly. He won about $60! Looks like his luck was hot that night! At least he won back the $20 of his that I lost. I was convinced that I was not winning because my mom was not down there with me. I always won when she’s close by! But, it was great to see Dad win. Every trip he has taken with my mom, neither of them has won anything. He was giddy as a schoolboy, it was fun to watch!

So, day #3 was finally over. When I got upstairs, my husband and kids were already asleep. Everyone was beat down from all the walking. Sleeping has never felt so good!!

Vegas Vacation Family Style - last installment

So here are days 4 and 5…..quickly.

    Day 4:

Last full day of Vegas was spent mostly in the NYNY and surrounding hotels. Since my mom had that allergic reaction from dinner the night before, she still didn’t feel too good. .

We grabbed a quick bite to eat at Canter’s inside MGM for breakfast. Then I just HAD to play the Majestic Lions $1 slots this trip. Last trip I won $150 on my second pull.

We found them and I turned $20 into $100 (on my last 2.00 when I moved to a different machine) My mom lost $40. Poor thing. My Dad got bit by the Lions bug and turned $40 into $60 quickly. Then, hubby went to play too and he lost $20 but as he was playing someone directly behind him won the progressive. It was only at like $1500.00 but of course….it always happens that way! Then Hubby played a little Star Wars while mom and I and the kids went down to Walgreens again for a few things ….he always wins on that machine….won another $100!

Today was rollercoaster (Manhattan Express) day. I didn’t go on it, but my husband and my son did. My daughter was not tall enough….which of course was “totally unfair!!!” haha

They really enjoyed the coaster and the coaster enjoyed our pocketbook….$45 for 2 riders and a picture. *humph* The kids and hubby wanted Nathan’s for lunch. I’m not a fan of Nathan’s at all so mom and I tried to go down to the deli for a sandwich. The line was unbelieveable and the people working in these eateries are SO slow! Mom changed her mind and went back up for pizza at Nathan’s. I moved over to Broadway Burger and waited just as long there for food. It was insane. Lunch was a bust – nothing really tasted any good. That’s what we get for eating food-court quality food for lunch in Vegas!

We went up and rested a bit….packed for our trip home and then for dinner we at America again. Great food, great service. I had the teriyaki shrimp wraps…they were to die for!

We played on and off during the evening, rotating with the kids. I did not have any more big wins …. In fact I lost about $120.00 in slots for the evening. But, hubby won back about $80 in the Star Wars machine again. He loves that bonus round….it really is a lot of fun and very interactive.

Had to get to bed because mom called and informed me that we were not going to be able to fly straight home out of Vegas because all the flights to DFW were oversold. We would be renting a car…driving to LAX and flying out from there.

    Day 5:

We got up and out by 6am (yeck). Got the rental and made our way to LAX. Made it there around 11am and had just missed one of the flights to DFW with open seats so they listed us for the next one. The next one was full but we finally made it out on the one that left around 145pm. Hubby, me and my daughter had the very last row of the plane (I was squished like a sardine) and my son, mom and Dad sat towards the middle. We had a really nice flight crew which made it a little more tolerable.

Oh, how I always hate to go home after a Vegas trip. We came home with money, which is always good. The kids had fun….the parents had fun. Now, I’m planning our stay in Feb. 3 nights at the Mirage for my birthday. I cannot wait!!

Thanks for the TR great to read, and glad to hear you started feeling better... Now don't take this the wrong way but it sounds like you would have a bit more "fun" if you'd left the kids at home, Vegas is not for kids, that's what Disney is for. It's not exactly kid friendly as you even mentioned along the way in your report.

Sounds like a good balance of Adult Time and Family Time
It's nice to have 4 adults to tag team with the kids and probably
would have worked better if Grandma felt better :peace:

I don't understand the porn slappers, if I didn't take the card from the
first 8 people what makes you think I want to grab your porn card???

Must be a good business, cause you see about a dozen of them in one place??

    I don't get it......:poke:

    Thanks for the Good Read

Oh we had plenty of fun with the kids. They did not hamper our time or our plans. It was fun to show them what mommy and daddy love about Vegas. I personally think there is a lot for kids to experience in Vegas, we just didn't have a ton of time to take advantage of all of it. We could've done the Shark Reef, secret garden, circus circus (eew)...things like that but we chose not to.

Now, the porn slappers?? yes, I could've done without that but they get on my nerves even when the kids are not with us. I always get the uncontrollable urge to punch one of them in the face.

We vacation 2x a year to vegas...just the hubby and I. We also vacation 2x a year to Disney World as well with the kids so we have a great balance. This was a last minute trip, but very fun nonetheless!

With all that said -- the kids won't be going back until they are "of age". They have seen what they wanted to see and had fun doing it. But, back to Vegas being mommy and daddy's "private" getaway!

Vegas again in Feb for hubby and I ....... Disney in June for the kiddos.
