    My Trip Report

While driving down to Arizona from California, somewhere between Barstow and Needles on I-40, my wife and I both decided it would be fun if we made a side trip to Vegas for one night. We were headed to my parents in Lake Havasu City for Christmas. The car was filled with me, my wife, our 5 year old daughter and our two Labrador Retrievers. Mind you, we're in a 2007 VW Rabbit.

We called a couple of hotels to see what the one-night room rate would be before Christmas and had some quotes. We decided we needed to get to Havasu and talk to my parents about watching the kid and the dogs for a night before we booked. Good think we did, as they had already a party planned for one of the nights we were there and we needed to be there. But, on Christmas eve, Em and I decided to think about the Friday after christmas. The rates would be higher, but it would still be fun. Parents were cool with the idea (and I think they wanted their granddaughter to themselves so they could spoil without us saying no..)

Drove the 2 1/2 hours to Vegas on Friday morning and decided to head out to Red Rock and see the sights. After we get all the way over there, we're told the scenic loop was closed because of the weather (still snow everywhere at Red Rock. It was about 10-11am or so and about 34 degrees at Red Rock. So, we decide to go over to Red Spring day area and took a nice walk around the area, looking at the scenery and marvelling at the snow. Then the wind picked up and we couldn't get back to the car fast enough.

We drove over to NYNY and checked in via the invited guests line, and received a room near the elevator that we wanted. We headed down to the casino and saw a 'craps learning' table. We didn't need the class, but watched the last 5 minutes or so of the class as at NYNY, they always lower the table limits at one table directly after a class gets out. So, we were lucky to get a $5 table on a friday at NYNY. Had some fun there and won a small bit of money, and lots of free drinks. It was a slow day for the cocktailer and we usually tip her big, so she took care of us well. She said come back anytime during her shift and she'll keep taking care of us. She said we'd already tipped her more than enough and she'll just take care of us with no tips. I said if we're winning, you'll get tips, otherwise we'll go sit in your slot section and you can just bring us freebies (unfortunatelly, we ended up in slots later...).

We though we might eat at Diablos, so we headed over to Monte Carlo, but we didn't like the prices. We headed across the street to see if the Hard Rock shuttle was at the MGM, and we'd go to Pink Taco. Right as we walked up, it showed up. We jumped on, went to HR, ate a pink taco, then went to see if the shuttle was over at the HR cafe to take us back. As we got to the cafe, the shuttle was pulling out onto the street. We ran over to the shuttle and banged on the door, the driver didn't want to open the door, showed him a $5, and he let us on. Still much cheaper than the taxi ride would have been!

Back to NYNY, gambled, lost. Em went to take a nap (we were up at about 5am this morning), I kept gambling playing Craps and 21 (lost). Then, we went to Nine Fine Irishmen to see Ri Ra (yep, always do this). Got there a bit early to say hi to the band and then we hung out with the girlfriend of one of lead singers. Em has a Vegas crush on the lead singer and really wanted to hate his girlfriend (1. she's his girlfriend, 2. she was really pretty), but she was so nice she loved her instead. Didn't stay too late as we were already wasted from a long day of being awake and drinking way too much. Went to bed around 1:30am or so as we had to get up early on Saturday, drive back to Lake Havasu (2.5 hours), then pick up the girl and dogs, pack the car and drive back to San Jose (9 hours). Em drove from Vegas to Havasu so I could get some extra sleep and make the longer drive the rest of the way and she could sleep. Unfortunately, our drive home to San Jose was even longer, as there was a really bad accident out on I-40 that closed the road for about 30-45 minutes to allow a life-flight helicopter to land. other than that, the drive was long but uneventful.

24 hours in vegas was NOT enough and we can hardly wait to be back there in about 2.5 weeks!

We're not even in SoCal! had to drive 9+ hours to get home! ugh! But, we are considering driving in March to save some cash. Drive there isn't so bad. it's the drive home that's a killer!

Sounds like you & Em made the most of the time you had at least. Great write up!

I'm not sure I could just do 24 hours.

When it's either 24 hours or nothing, you can do it. It was no Vegas for three whole more weeks, or 24 hours... so we took 24 hours. Pretty sad.. we couldn't wait just three weeks... :)

I guess living so close, it would work better. I'm not sure 24 hours would be worth it for me having to fly and dealing with security & ever increasing flight delays.

Nothing wrong with squeezing in an extra trip when you can!

Yeah, for flying and all that, it would suck. But when we were only 2.5 hours away by car, different story.
