I have a flight on Fri ,Jul 1 from LAS to BWI what are the chances of being cancelled ? If, that is the case how long might I be in LAS and will they help with a room ? Right now I'm guessing I'd be in LAS for a while. This might be a trip to remember.

Nobody can actually answer that. If we could predict the future, we would all get rich in vegas, lol. But FWIW, you can go to FlightAware and check the historical information about that flight and the percentages of past delays and cancellations. Otherwise, if the possibility of cancellation is giving you heartburn, switch to a morning flight. Most cancellations and delays tend to be later in the day. And if your morning flight gets cancelled, there is a decent chance they can get you on a later flight the same day. If you're on the lsat flight out and its cancelled, you are stuck

I find that the last flight of the day will typically not be canceled as the airline needs that plane at the other airport the next morning. That is, in normal times of course.

As for the second half of that question, it depends onthe reason for the cancelation whether they will get you a hotel room or not. But, also don't expect a hotel with a casino as there are reasons there are so many name brand hotels dotted all over Vegas.

Just be prepared to think outside the box if it is canceled as you will be in the same boat as a few hundred other people on that same flight.

Somewhat true, although due to delays/crew time outs, it's riskier than taking a flight at 7 am. Also, I wouldn't be super concerned with leaving LV on a Friday...getting canceled flying out on Saturday or Sunday evening is surely worse.

to OP: you have posted numerous threads about this. You can't control what happens here. Go enjoy your trip and worry less about it. If you're really concerned, in the future, book a morning flight, not an evening flight, as those have the lowest amount of delays and cancelations. Go enjoy your trip and stop thinking about something you can't predict

    Good point.

But with 3-4000 flights per day, hard to say which SWA flights could be cancelled.

I am GUESSING you are talking about SWA since you mentioned BWI - but only a guess on my part.

    (details matter)

I wouldn't worry about it. Go and have fun. Just check your texts or emails while you're in Vegas to stay on top of notifications.

The airline industry took a lot of heat over last week's fiasco, so I'm sure they'll be working harder to avoid "day of flight" cancellations. And if you're on a nonstop from Vegas to DC, you'll be avoiding the connecting-flight issues altogether. That's where we hit trouble last week.

    @Bernie2
As a former "road warrior" I'm often asked about this issue
For what it's worth here's my advice if your worried

One week before the flight track the plane all the way back to where it starts the day. While not 100% planes often fly the same routes on the same days and at least you'll get practice how to do it. Make a list of flt# and cities. If you don't now how to track a plane "The Points Guy" has a good primer. Worst case you can track by scheduled gate # arrivals/departures.
Once you have the cities your plane is likely to be in keep an eye on the weather there.
On day of departure you can then track the plane all day and be prepared
As most airlines are still waving change fees if your super worried book a backup and just cancel if not needed

I think I read about 3% of flights are being cancelled. That probably increases with bad weather, strikes, etc. They should be able to reroute you if the flight is cancelled, and may do so automatically. Probably won't be a nonstop though. If you don't like the rerouting Southwest chose for you, I believe southwest allows you to select another flight without any additional costs.

Some things in life are a gamble. If you have to be at a close family member's wedding the next morning, maybe reconsider the trip. If not, enjoy yourself. You are already taking a redeye flight so you aren't going to be in top form the next day anyway.

I've been rerouted many times on Southwest over 30 years and I don't recall them ever providing me with a hotel room.

I think your chances are much better that it gets delayed. As a matter of fact, I would just count on it. If it is not delayed or canceled, it will be your last win in Vegas for that trip!

Time-outs are the biggest concern with last-flight-out in my experience, and that can also be triggered by delayed incoming flights or connections leaving the crew on your flight waiting. That said, the only time I regularly experienced that issue was in the Caribbean, where there was like one flight going out from SJU to whatever island I was going to. As others have mentioned, it's just not worth stressing about, because there's no way to know and nothing you can do about it.

to be on the safe side, would get a hotel room for your last day------do not check out when you leave for the airport------you will have a room to come back to .if your flite is cancelled-----also a place to relax for a while prior to leaving--------i personally prefer the red-eye and do this as a matter of practice

LAS SW Fri it should be interesting as I have a mid afternoon flight home. Maybe, they'll need my seat which might mean $ and /or miles. I'll let you tomorrow or Saturday. I have more LAS flights booked this summer, so it might be very interesting or so it seems to me.

    I'm with @Cageet.
I love a deal. But they're gonna have to drag me off the plane like an anti-masker from 2021 before I give up my seat for some miles or credit vouchers. Particularly during these days of epidemic cancelations and delays.

Just had a mid-afternoon flight home last Friday with no issues. Didn't even hear any announcements for volunteers to take a different flight.

I know “of” people who would go to the old mueller airport in Austin and have CHEAP SWA tickets to Houston one way….some to Dallas but didn’t know “of” them as well but they existed……..When the legislature was in session all the good ole boys wanted to hop and go. (This was way before 911). No internet, no cell phones.
So bargaining would be present for ca$h. In the gate area. It was a dance. And it was profitable when rent was 125$ for a single side of the duplex (although “they” were one wall away). :) And who checked luggage?
“Hang these suits up will ya sweetie?”

Fun Fact: The first person ever bumped from a flight was Orville Wright on December 14, 1903.

He received no compensation. But he was booked on a later flight.

One trivia tidbit I remember about Southwest scheduling was that as late as the early 2000s, you could not, by law, book a flight on Southwest from Omaha to Dallas on Southwest, even though the same plane flew from Omaha to St. Louis and then to Dallas. You had to book two separate one-way tickets and (allegedly? some say they did not enforce this) get off the plane and back on for the second leg of the flight.

Pressure to move to Dallas new airport. Swa was different then.
