oh, and just to show you how NO FUN this was:

I have always been a BIG advocate for The Cal's Oxtail soup, and it had been a tradition for me to get it on my 1st night in.
What a disappointment! The carrots and celery were too big, like no one wanted to bother chopping up the veggies smaller, and there seemed to be a shortage of oxtails too!

Also, that Brisket et al, at Circa was $46! Holy Cow!
Glad I had a comp, otherwise NO!

The oxtail soup at the Cal is a legend. Unfortunately the legend dissipates when the dish is served. Reality no longer does justice to the legend it once was.:(

But at one time, the dish was every bit as the legend. Somewhere along the line things started to go downhill. The tails are no longer trimmed of the excess fat and the broth suffers because of this. It becomes greasy as if no effort is made to skim off any excess fat. Greasy soup equals yuk......

Good oxtail requires time and a fair amount of attention and fuss to make it come out great. When you have to make hundreds of dishes every night you're forced to employ mass production techniques and this is where the dish goes downhill.

I was amazed it was so pricey for a dish served at such odd hours (according to the advertisement near the cashier). But these two facts price / quality only reflect the new approach by corporate. Compared to just 4-5 years ago, it’s nearing 180.

Loco Moco was good, but better at Aloha Specialties, IMO.

this is the very FIRST time I had to give a less than raving review to The Cal.
Just too many minuses over the few pluses.

I feel the same way. I understand part of it. limited hours limited menu et cetera.
I have been in the Cal several times this year and overall just disappointed.

My exact thought of the current situation in Vegas. Which is why it's Atlantic City for me these days. No need to fly cross country, wear a mask on the plane and in the casino, deal with long lines, high prices, etc. Not worth the aggravation just to play games in a casino. I can do that here at home with no mask requirements and less stress. Thanks for the great trip report!!
