I'm currently in Majorca and I was talking to a couple from Dallas yesterday and they were saying about the water issues.

 

Yep, the SW's in dire straits when it comes to water. I believe Nevada has outlawed grass lawns. I believe the main reason for resort fees is to pay the increasingly more expensive water and power bills.

 

The entire system was fundamentally flawed from the outset. But that's not exactly new news around here ... or the West.

 

My company build a pipeline from the Minnesota/ Canada border to Morgan city Louisiana back in 2003-5. A water pipeline from Lake Superior across the great divide would be challenging, but absolutely doable.

 

From a technical standpoint, yes. Legally, that's an entirely other critter.

 

There's this pesky thing called the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact that wouldn't allow that. At least for now.

"The Compact bans the diversion of Great Lakes water outside the basin, with limited exceptions."

I have yet to see a migration of people from the SW to the rust belt in search of green lawns. Nobody in their right mind moves here.

 

I left Dayton Ohio when I was 21- in 2001. I wouldn't move back if you paid me! Cloudy, gloomy, rude people, terrible economy. I return to visit family and they always ask "When are you moving back?" Uh, never!

 

California has the 5th largest economy in the World! Before that economy is devastated by lack of water I would bet the compact is discarded. California feeds America.

 

Inter-basin transfer aren't just a piece of legislation away. Look at the problems with that brilliant idea to send Lake Michigan water to the Mississippi watershed. That's an ecosystem problem, sure, but putting that drain over there and this spout here is a huge legal matter.

 

Who would of thought building mega cities in the desert then complaining about lack of water would ever be a thing..

Desert- any large, extremely dry area of land with sparse vegetation. It is one of Earth’s major types of ecosystems, supporting a community of distinctive plants and animals specially adapted to the harsh environment.

 

8 states and 1 foreign country would take your bet and then your money. As mentioned above the Great Lakes will lead to renewal of the Midwest..

When you build a big economy around unsustainable use of water, your long term fix to maintaining it can't be "now we will unsustainably use YOUR water"
