    My Trip Report

Pre Trip: My writing will never be mistaken for Hemingway or Steinbeck

Thanks VMB for all of the great information. It has been ten years since our last Las Vegas trip and boy has it changed.

My wife of forty years Mrs. Tutontow and I flew out of Tampa on Sunday October 3rd and returned Thursday October 7th. We had a terrace suite booked at the Cosmo for four nights. As luck would have it our fifteen-year-old cat (four legged son) comes up sick roughly twelve hours before our flight and we had to put him down. Not a good way to start our trip.

    Sunday, Day One:

Our Uber driver picks us up right on time and gets us to the airport without a glitch. The door to door service is great and really doesn’t cost that much more than parking at the airport. We really don’t like to drive at night anymore so this is a great option. With our four legged son no longer with us it is great to get out of the house and get our mind off of him.

The flight and the layover are both smooth and our bags and Uber arrive right on time. I must say we are rightfully proud of our airport here in Tampa. Both Dallas and McCarren are laid out horribly and look like dumps compared to Tampa. At Las Vegas we walked a country mile to pickup our bags and catch the Uber. In Dallas if we didn’t have a long layover we would have missed our connection because the hike was so far.

We arrived at The Cosmo around noon and our room is not ready. We requested room 3533 and could not get it. We leave our bags with the bell desk and proceed to pick up our players cards. Then it is off to The Chandelier for VP. The drink tickets come out at a good pace and all is good in the world of Tutontow.

Let me say we always seem to dig ourselves a hole the first night of gambling and then spend the rest of the trip trying dig ourselves out. This trip we decided to play light the first two days and hard and heavy the last two. It should be easy for us. We check in, play VP at the 25 cents level, Javier’s at three o’clock, walk over to Walgreen’s and pick up some beer and wine, then watch Tom Brady and the Buc’s beat the Patriot’s, then sit on the balcony and watch the fountains until we crash.

Fortunately, all went as planned. We were given room 3733 with a great view and we even left The Chandelier a little ahead and a little buzzed. Javier’s was everything we had hoped it would be and a jalapeno margarita really set the mood.

I had the trio of seafood enchiladas and my wife had the salmon. Both the food and service were excellent.

    Monday, Day Two:

We really aren’t much for big breakfast’s so we brought a small travel coffee maker and some pods. This worked well for us. I also brought some liquid IV packs and used bottled water we bought at Walgreen’s. Caffeine and hydration on the balcony along with a hot shower and we are good to go.

A good friend of mine had just returned from the Venetian and had $167.00 in tito’s he forgot to cash in at the Wynn. He asked if I could help him out and cash them for him. He said he would give me half the money for the effort. I said no problem. Instead, we will play with your money and split whatever we have leftover. More to come on this.

We Uber on down to the Wynn and cash the tickets. I guess we showed up there too early because there weren’t any blackjack tables open on the main floor. We found a VP machine and lost 100 of the 167 dollars in no time. I must say not just The Wynn but every casino seemed like a morgue in the daytime hours compared to my prior trips in the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. I remember when you would see at least a dozen BJ tables open before noon. I wonder if it is COVID, higher table minimums or today’s players prefer slots. It was disappointing at the Cosmo to see just two 3:2 $25.00 BJ tables open before noon. On a good note it was never hard to find a 3:2 BJ table at the $25.00 level except, at The Wynn, where they didn’t have any tables open when we were there at 9 AM on a Monday.

We decided to leave the Wynn and go slumming at Treasure Island. After The Cosmo and The Wynn we suffered a little culture shock when we walked into Treasure Island. We find a 3:2 $10.00 BJ table and proceed to have a blast. The other players and the dealers were great. The dealers are busting, we are pressing our bets and tipping on just about every other hand.

Okay, more on my friends tito money. We had 67 dollars of his (Randy’s) money left and we decide to use it. Everyone at the table joins in on the fun and Randy is now playing vicariously all the way from Tampa, Florida. When he would get a blackjack everyone would yell out his name and cheer for Randy. When he would spit or double down the dealers would say “good luck Randy”. It was an absolute hoot. Five hours later we are good and drunk and Randy along with the Tutontow’s are up a tidy little sum.

We then went to Phil’s Steakhouse at The TI. We ate too much and headed back to The Cosmo and hung on the balcony until we crashed.

    Tuesday, Day Three:

Mrs. Tutontow is determined to play Jackpot Party. Thanks to everyone on VMB who pointed us in the right direction. We head on down to The Luxor and find it close to the elevators by the buffet. I must say at age 65 and with all of the elevated walkways it was not worth the walk. We should have taken an Uber. When we finally made it we did leave a little ahead. The Luxor sure has turned for the worse over the last ten years. It was hot, dark and dirty. Cocktail waitresses were nowhere to be found. On a good note all of the workers were friendly and polite.

We then walk from the Luxor to the OYO. A total waste of time. Just not our cup of tea. The drink service was horrible, the dealers were moaning about management and the whole vibe was a downer. We Uber back to The Cosmo and I finally try a Verbena. It lived up to my expectations. We leave bartop VP a little ahead and walk of to The Forum Shops to Joe’s Seafood. Supper was excellent. The Mrs. has Salmon and I have the broiled seafood platter. The salmon was incredible. The cut and the doneness was very good. We both were quite pleased. Service was amazing. They were slammed and still took great care of us. On a side note let me add I believe in angels and one saved my life on the way over. On one of the crosswalks I misjudged the top step and fell backwards. Fortunately there was a young man in his twenties who had lightning fast reflexes and he grabbed me. Mrs. Tutontow was totally freaked and said if he hadn’t reached out I would have fallen backwards down forty steps. He said “no big deal” and kept on truckin’. IMHO he saved my life and we will never forget him.

    Wednesday, Day Four:

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. We woke up feeling like a million bucks. We hung out at The Cosmo and played a little VP and Blackjack. Unfortunately it didn’t go real well. We both wanted to check out Ellis Island so we Ubered over to there. We find a ten dollar 3:2 game and are having a blast. We are drinking and tipping, just having a blast. We are up over $400.00 and the floor supervisor offers us a full comp to any restaurant they have. We have reservations for Gallagher’s but I had heard so much about Ellis Island’s ribs we had to try them. Now we like fancy, high end places but we had the BBQ and it did not disappoint. We didn’t check out The Front Yard but it looked like a fun place. Let me say it is great to like high end places but sometimes you have the best time when you least expect it. This was one of those times.

The worst of times. Mrs. Tutontow had a little too much fun. The lack of sleep, the booze and the depression over the death of her four-legged son caught up with her. Before we went into eat at Ellis Island she went on full tilt and lost everything we had won. We Ubered back to The Cosmo and she refused to go up to the room. I am talking full, full tilt. Into the high limit room we go and burn through another 2k. We were basically one hour away from leaving 1500 ahead, instead we left 3500 down. We still have over half of our budget left but DAMN IT!!!

    Thursday, Going Home:

Basically, everything goes like clockwork. Packing, Uber, airport all easy peasy. One quick note. American Airlines changed my departure time. They moved it to 30 minutes later. This only gave us a forty minute layover in Charlotte. We decided on a later flight out of Charlotte. Long story short our new layover was two hours longer, so instead of getting home at 8PM we got home around 10PM.

All in all a good trip. We had a great time. Pretty much everyone we encountered from the workers to the tourist were pleasant. Our room was amazing. The food was great. For the most part cocktail service was good. For my 65 year old body Vegas is not all they pedestrian friendly. Yes we can do it but Uber is my new BFF. Speaking of Uber, they were fast, economical, pleasant and clean.

I will dump some photos. Most of you have seen these sights a million time. If somebody can identify this version of VP it will be most appreciated.

Great trip report! Sorry to hear about your cat. Sounds like you had some great BJ table fun - that’s the best when you get a fun table like that!

I enjoyed reading this so much! Such a sad start with the passing of your four legged son, but I'm glad you and Mrs. Tutontow pressed onward with your trip.

Losing a beloved pet is a horrible event, even more so due to the timing. Sorry.

Nice report and sorry for the loss of your four legged friend. I believe that is Ultimate X Gold VP. God works in mysterious ways on having that young man there to stop your fall.

I don't think we will be back to Las Vegas anytime soon. We had a great time and as we all know when it comes to gambling Las Vegas is "the king of the hill". The thing is we really don't do shows and fine dining is not all that uncommon for us. We have a ton of great restaurants within a 40 minute drive. Both of us hate to fly, the whole experience sucks. Having said all of that we live in central Florida. We have four cruise ports and three decent casinos fairly close to our home, not to mention one hour junkets to Biloxi. We get comped cruises and comped rooms on a regular basis and it is a lot less cost and headache to get to them. As I stated LV is amazing, at the top of the heap but for us the main attraction is gambling. It has been ten years since our last trip to there and it really hit me that I have just as much fun in pretty much any casino we go to.

You are 100% correct, it is Ultimate X Gold VP. and yes God works in mysterious ways on having that young man there to stop your fall. I wish he had stuck around so we could have thanked him properly.

Yes, God certainly does work in mysterious ways. That young guy certainly had "cat" like reflexes.
