Sorry for being a no-show yesterday. I had oral surgery early in the morning and it kicked my butt quite hard. Here is Friday's data:

    Nevada COVID-19 updates for 10/1:

Test positivity (note, w/ 7-day lag) is down: 10.13% (-0.13%)
    Hospitalizations are down: 901 (-21)
    Cases are down: 833 (-9)

Clark County cases are down: 465 (-3)
Washoe County cases are down: 174 (-14)

    https://thenevadaindependent.com/article/coronavirus-contextualized-61st-edition-case-numbers-hospitalizations-remain-high-but-start-to-improve-in-most-counties

I'm not sure that Megan Messerly or I realized that there would be so many of these back when we started. ;)

Cases are falling, which is what we are hoping to see. Clark County is about half of where it was at the peak in early August, but still there is some distance to go. Please continue to wear your mask and distance as you can in Las Vegas.

Remember this headline from May 2020?

If that was "incalculable", what is a number 7x times this list?

    https://www.statnews.com/2021/10/01/mercks-antiviral-pill-reduces-hospitalization-of-covid-patients-a-possible-game-changer-for-treatment/

This is wonderful news if we could have a COVID treatment that doesn't require hospitalization and could be prescribed to people by their own doctor and picked up at a pharmacy for home use. However, this study was small and has not yet been peer reviewed. I assume that they will be asking for Emergency Use Authorization and more information will come out about this, but I think this is a story to watch.

Nevada has changed some of it's testing data to include antigen testing.

    covidupdate.jpg

As a result, Megan Messerly's numbers for the 7 day average of testing is going to be off for a week or so, because of the huge case jumps that will appear in today's county-by-county reported numbers.

See the new cases for today? This kind of increase will really mess up the averages:

    Nevada COVID-19 updates for 10/4:

Tomorrow I'll post the weekly county by county numbers from the CDC and we can get an idea of what progress Clark County is making.

    Nevada COVID-19 updates for 10/5:

Test positivity (note, w/ 7-day lag) is down: 8.60% (-0.21%)
    Hospitalizations are down: 849 (-12)
Cases are down: 801 (-32 since Friday)

    * A note that case averages for the next week (until this Monday's outlier data falls off next Monday) will be six-day case averages. This was the best way to adjust because our data tracks *reported* new case numbers each day. We've stuck with reporting new daily reported cases / average daily reported cases throughout the pandemic because it makes our data responsive to sudden upticks or downturns in numbers of reported cases. i.e. Everyone who tests positive today won't be reported a positive until tomorrow or the next day or the next day or the next day (technically) in the data... so it's more responsive to report daily reported cases than *actual* daily cases.

Clark County remains at High Risk:

Last Week Clark County was at 142.85 cases per 100k population, this week it is at 143.69, which is up just a tiny bit. Since Clark County is not close to being under 50, which is required for the end of mask mandates indoors, the mask mandate continues.

That's it for me this week.

A note about next week. I am going to be traveling for my birthday week, so I will be away from the computer and out doing things during the day. I am planning to post the CDC Numbers along with Nevada numbers on Tuesday evening, but other than that, I will most likely not be updating this thread, unless there is an important breaking story on the topic of COVID in Vegas.

For current COVID numbers, go to the NV Indy's COVID data page - https://thenevadaindependent.com/coronavirus-data-nevada

Alternately, Megan Messerly tweets out the numbers every day, usually in the afternoon. You can find them here - https://twitter.com/meganmesserly

Other than that, I'll be back to daily updates on Monday, October 18th.

I thought this might be helpful as we head into cold/flu season, along with COVID-19 still doing its thing.

How To Tell The Difference Between Cold, Flu and COVID-19:
    https://www.king5.com/article/news/health/coronavirus/cold-flu-covid-differences/283-0f878f18-c0b7-4f97-9319-e4aa0a7252ac

I think it's important that we all pay attention this fall/winter. If you feel sick you should consider the advice in this article. If it's just some sniffles or congestion, it may just be a cold. If you have body aches or fever, think about where you have been recently and if you could have been exposed to someone with COVID. Consider getting a test. It isn't the most pleasant test as someone does wipe the area where your nose and throat intersect with a swab, but knowing you're not spreading COVID is worth the discomfort, IMO.

If you have loss of smell and taste, that's a big warning sign for COVID, so please act accordingly. If we can get more people vaccinated and educate people on how not to spread this virus, maybe we can not have another large spike this fall.

A couple thoughts about Colin Powell's death from COVID:

Today we got news that Colin Powell died from COVID-19 Related Complications, despite his being vaccinated. I am seeing a lot of disinformation about the fact he was vaccinated, but not looking at the fact he was 84 years old and battling a blood cancer, multiple myeloma, and Parkinson's Disease. Multiple Myeloma is well documented to cause complications with the body's ability to fight infections.

The real story here should be that we are not yet addressing the large group of people who are immunocompromised or otherwise have health issue that put them at high risk for COVID. I am among that group of people. Those who refuse to wear masks, or get vaccinated are doing more to prolong this pandemic than anyone else.

Stop spreading this garbage. The vaccines are safe, they do not contain magnets or chips or any other nonsense people are trying to sell you. They are saving lives. And until we get the vast majority of Americans vaccinated, we are going to continue to see more variants, more sickness and more death.

Not quite there yet, but getting much closer to those spring days when people were getting vaccinated and we all were dreaming of our Covid-less summer. Thank the stupid Delta variant and people opposed to the mitigation measures that resulted in this giant spike and a prolonging of the mitigation measures. I'm hopeful we are seeing the end of this particular cycle, but be sure to get your COVID Vaccine and your Flu Shot this fall, so we can avoid another winter spike.

Today is the day for the CDC County Numbers as well:
    https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#county-view|Nevada|32003|Risk|community_transmission_level

Clark County remains at High Risk.

    cdc1.JPG

Last week Clark County was at 139.54 cases per 100k population, this week it is at 105.62, which is a significant decrease. However, because Clark County remains over 50 per 100k, which is required for the end of mask mandates indoors, the mask mandate continues.

    cdc2.JPG

We could see Clark County go below 100 cases per 100k population in the coming weeks. That would put them in the Substantial Risk category, still too high for the mask mandate to be lifted, which is under 50 per 100k population, but certainly movement in the right direction.

Should You Mix & Match Your COVID Vaccine?
    https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2021/10/mix-match-booster-covid-vaccine/620395/

There's some talk about whether or not it's best to mix your vaccines. This article seems to be summed up as:

3 shots of Moderna = Best results
2 Pfizer → Moderna Booster = Next best
3 shots of Pfizer = Still very good
2 Moderna → Pfizer Booster = Also very good
    J&J → Moderna Booster = Yes
    J&J → Pfizer Booster = Yes
J&J → J&J = Get Moderna or Pfizer Booster instead
1 dose J&J = Not recommended, get a booster of one of the mRNA vaccines

    https://thenevadaindependent.com/article/coronavirus-contextualized-64th-edition-cases-plateau-in-washoe-while-the-rest-of-nevada-continues-to-recover-from-summer-delta-surge

As of Thursday, 622 new cases were reported on average each day over the previous seven days, down from 709 last week and significantly down from the highest point of the current wave, 1,226, which the state hit on Sept. 13.

In Clark County, which was hit early and hard by the latest wave of the virus, cases continued to decrease, hitting a seven-day average of 363 on Thursday. That’s down from 437 last week and significantly down from 917 on Aug. 1, the highest point of the current wave.

This is wonderful progress in Nevada. Cases are about half of what they were at the peak of this latest wave, just a couple months ago.

Nationally we are seeing cases and deaths declining as well. As we head into Fall and Winter, along with Cold & Flu season, this could change, but right now it looks positive and continuing to trend in the right direction.

We still have a long way to go with the mask mandate. We may get to Serious Risk soon, but to remove the mask mandate, I estimate that Clark County cases needs to be somewhere around 160, and they are still at 363. It doesn't mean they won't get to a point where masks can be done away with in the casino, but I wouldn't be holding my breath for it to happen in the next few weeks. I saw a "prediction" it will happen by Thanksgiving, but I'm not sure I'd put money on it. But with cases and deaths going down, the masks appear to be working to slow the spread. Just keep doing what is working.

    Have a good weekend.

“On the side of the casino workers, I suspect that they are around more unvaccinated people or more people that are not using masks perfectly than what you find in the health care setting. So their risk comes from a different type of bucket,” Swann said.

This is also true for food servers, who frequently interact with customers who go maskless as they eat and drink, she said.

“So effectively, inside a restaurant becomes much more like an unmasked environment for the waitstaff,” Swann said. “And, you know, we have no idea what the vaccination status of those people (customers) are.”

In most indoor venues in Clark County, people are not required to show their vaccination status but are currently required to wear masks.

“So, I would think that a bartending job, a waitstaff job, would be a pretty risky one,” Swann said. “I actually think that that could be riskier than a health care worker and casino (worker).”

This makes sense. We know that the greatest risk of exposure is indoors with people who are unmasked of unknown vaccination status. Areas where mask wearing is minimal would probably have the highest number of cases, breakthrough or otherwise.

I love the way James Hamblin explains things and this one has me questioning my pride in being "fully vaxxed, still anti-social".

Clark County Remains at High Risk.

    cdc1.JPG

Last week Clark County was at 105.62 cases per 100k population, this week it is at 110.87, which is a slight increase. Nothing to panic about, we'll see what happens next week. However, because Clark County remains over 50 per 100k, which is required for the end of mask mandates indoors, the mask mandate continues.

    Coronavirus Contextualized, 65th Edition:
    https://thenevadaindependent.com/article/coronavirus-contextualized-65th-edition-cases-plateau-in-clark-climb-again-in-washoe-with-vaccines-for-kids-on-the-horizon

Quick note from Megan Messerly: As a programming note, “Coronavirus Contextualized” will be on hiatus for the month of November. It will return on Friday. Dec. 3.

This part reiterates what I've been posting about the mask mandate:

Under the CDC’s metrics, counties are considered at risk for “high” transmission if they have more than 100 cases per 100,000 residents in the last seven days, “substantial” if they have between 50 and 100, “moderate” if they have between 10 and 50 and “low” if they have fewer than 10.

As of Tuesday, all Nevada counties except Esmeralda were considered at “high” risk of transmission. As a result, all counties except Esmeralda remain subject to universal indoor masking precautions for both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.

Counties can have mask mandates put in place if they have two weeks of “substantial” or “high” transmission; those mask mandates will automatically be removed after two weeks of “low” or "moderate" transmission.

For perspective, Clark County’s case rate was 110 as of Wednesday, according to the CDC, meaning it remains more than double what it would need to be in order for the mask mandate to go away. Even then, the county’s mask mandate must remain low for two weeks in a row before it can be lifted and could be reimposed should cases climb again.

In Washoe County, the case rate stands at 148 as of Wednesday, meaning that it is nearly triple what it would need to be for its mask mandate to be removed.

Stat has a piece with a video that talks about being immunocompromised and why vaccines may be less effective for them. The solution is to get as many other people vaccinated, so they do not spread the disease to someone who can't protect themselves. Please click through to watch the short video about how you getting a vaccine will help those who are immunocompromised.

*Reminder there typically appears to be a dip in cases after holidays as a result of reporting delays + possibly fewer people seeking testing during holidays.

A note about the daily numbers from Nevada:

Megan Messerly is going to be taking some well deserved time off in November and will not be posting the daily numbers or doing a Coronavirus Contextualized on Fridays.

She has set up a "Meganbot" in her place to tweet the numbers daily at 1pm. You can follow that twitter account here - https://twitter.com/nvindycovidbot

I will continue to post the daily numbers in this thread.

November 2, 2021 Update from CDC County Tracker:
    https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#county-view|Nevada|32003|Risk|community_transmission_level

Clark County Remains at High Risk. *

    cdc1.JPG

Last week Clark County was at 110.87 cases per 100k population, this week it is at 119.91, which is a slight increase. Still not time to panic about a new surge, but because Clark County remains over 50 per 100k, the mask mandate continues.

    cdc2.JPG

    * There was a LVRJ article yesterday that said that at one point on Monday morning, Clark County was showing up as Substantial Risk (Below 100 per 100k population) at 92.69, down from 109.59 on Friday.
    https://www.reviewjournal.com/news/politics-and-government/clark-county/clark-county-moves-from-high-to-substantial-risk-of-covid-19-spread-2470054/

But I believe that the numbers are still compared based on Tuesday every week, so this is the "official" number for this week. Plus, being in "substantial risk" doesn't make much of a difference. For the mask mandate to be lifted, Clark County needs to be below 50 cases per 100k (Moderate Risk) for two weeks before the mandate would be rolled back. And it would be reinstated if there were two weeks above that threshold.

This is an interesting article about the various "incentives" tried to get people to get the COVID Vaccine. What worked? What didn't?
