Lunch at an LV favorite, been here before.

Entree arrives, in a big bowl. I've ordered this before. I lifted the bowl, oddly my hands encounter gritty feeling on the outside. I tipped the bowl se the underside. It's got specks of something.

Maybe the dishwasher missed some stuff. Maybe a kitchen worker had some food on their hands when plating.

I decided to play it safe... they're remaking it.

Would you have sent it back?

Yeah, but just make sure the don't disguise something else in there to get back at you. I trust no one.

I definitely would have sent it back. If the outside of the bowl was dirty, there's a decent chance the inside is, too.

And I wouldn't worry in the slightest about them doing something to "get back" at you. Besides that being largely an urban legend -- it's an actual crime that you can go to jail for, and Vegas has a pretty active health department -- you weren't being fussy and complaining about something subjective. There was something wrong with the dish, quite literally.

I agree that ReTriggerMe doesn't have to worry about retribution when he receives his new meal in a clean bowl...however...

A friend of mine shared a conversation he had with a man who has a son who works in a restaurant. Apparently the son "does things" to food based on the customer. The father is quite worried about it and has told him it needs to stop. I'm not sure if my friend doesn't know which restaurant it is or just didn't want to share it with me, but I'm guessing fast food place. I kind of like to go inside where I can watch my food being made now. ;)

Fair enough, and I'm not saying it never happens or it's impossible. But in a Vegas place, there are enough people around, and enough cameras, that it's an absolutely enormous risk to take in response to an entirely reasonable request.

Yes I would have sent it back. I picked up a sandwich and Coke at a drive thru yesterday, and thankfully they didn’t have the sandwich ready, so the Coke was handed to me. It tasted like Coke, but with no sugar. I thought bag in box soft drinks eliminated that problem, but apparently not. They drew the Coke from another dispenser, and it was the real thing!

If caught I would imagine the worker can be fired and noted on his work record.

Also, respectable management would appreciate these substandard practices and would welcome getting rid of these type of employees. They cannot build their reputation and uphold professional qualities if they are unaware about these things.

One incident I'd like to share happened a while ago. A co-worker and I went to a restaurant and we both ordered the same thing: Won Ton noodles in broth with fresh veggies. We were hungry and we both ate everything broth and all, down to the bottom of our bowls.

My co-worker discovered at the bottom, half hidden in the folds of a mustard leaf, a huge dead horsefly. When he notified management, they acted a bit perturbed but grudgingly refunded his bowl. I felt mine should have been refunded also, because I believe the broth is not made individually but in a large pot. And who knows how many horseflies were in that pot, lol!:vomit:

What bothered me the most was how indifferent and perturbed the management was. They acted like flies, worms, hair and other stuff like that falls under the "shit happens" category and shouldn't be considered a big deal.

Forget getting fired, he could be arrested. Adulterating food is a crime.
I'm with you on that. Stuff can happen. A dirty bowl slipping through the dishwashing process isn't unheard of; hell, it happens to me at home. It's the management response that really tells you something. Not that this was a health issue, but I had a place I order from regularly forget part of my order three times in a row. After the third time, I said something to the assistant manager, not "complaining" but just mentioning it so he could fix it. He sighed and said, "Yeah, that happens all the time." Wrong answer. I followed up with the GM (again, not complaining, but I'm firmly of the belief that if nobody says anything, they just don't know there's a problem), who looked horrified and said, "That's not okay, I'm going to talk to him today." Right answer.

I would send it back for a remake too. It's better to be safe, than sorry. I'm always nice to the servers when something is amiss with my order, so I doubt that they would do anything to the remake. LOL If it were a major issue, for example if my chicken was under cooked and raw, I would politely ask to speak to the manager, since that would be a health issue that would need to be addressed immediately.

Although if a customer is a real demanding jerk or has a history of acting that way, I'm sure doing something to that's persons remake would be going through the workers mind, but it would jeopardize their job if they were ever caught doing such a thing, as well a being a potential crime.

For the record... I was never concerned about "food-otage" in this situation. Even if I was... it's one of those places with an open kitchen visible by diners.

I just thought it noteworthy that, on encountering a gritty bowl-outside, for a second, I thought about ignoring it.

Definitely. It was probably nothing, but these days it shouldn't happen. Commercial dishwashers would have taken it off unless it was concrete. Probably not from someone's hands. Chances are it was picked up on a counter that should have been, but was wiped down. My guess might be sesame seeds or equivelant. Always point it out reasonably to your server. They should have no quals remaking.

When something is wrong with the services (or in rare cases the products) I provide, I want to know about it, and I want the opportunity to make things right.

I would assume that most restaurant managers and employees think the same way.

I would certainly not go Full Karen, but inform them in a courteous and nonthreatening way "uh, do you think that you can take care of this for me please?" that something is wrong and that they have the opportunity to correct it.
