How common are terribly irresponsible gambling choices these days?

Vast majority are their for ‘the experience’. Addiction doesn’t hit everyone. You can see it in their eyes (behaviour)….they were there….

I read court opinions relating to various topics on of interest Google scholar for fun and education. Here are a few interesting ones of the dozens out there regarding compulsive gambling and overuse/abuse of credit. They give some sad background on how some individuals got in over their heads and/or couldn't stop.

Haha.... there's a marketing term for that... forgot what it is. A higher price for something makes people think it is valuable or special, so they are more likely to buy it than at a lower price.

Off topic I know, but I believe Pelaton is a recent widely-known example of this. They raised their price significantly and increased sales as people thought it was a more premium product.

Wife's cousin had a pawnshop in LV for a while. He would tell us how he would make a killing on degenerate gamblers getting a pittance for expensive watches and jewelry. Sad.

I had a cousin who was a gambling addict. Long story short he was into the loan sharks for 25k not including interest. To pay it off they had him do a drug run, ended up getting pulled over and arrested. His sister works for ATF so he got off and my uncle paid the loan sharks off, didn’t stop him, lost everything and ended up dead in a hotel room in AC 2 years ago. Now whenever I mention going on a gambling trip, I have to listen to my uncle tell me I can lose it all and Yadda yadda. I don’t say anything cause his son’s death nearly killed him.

I know we have a 'Wow!' button, but I wish there was a 'Holy shit!' button for this.

I'm aware of two otherwise very successful local (to Omaha) businesspeople who became indebted to the LV casino goons for much more than $25k.

In the more recent case they were plying him with drugz and, uh, "intimate company" to keep him occupied and his bets coming.

I live in NJ and play online frequently. But I only play if they have bonus offers. It makes it hard to lose, but of course not impossible. I’ve been a consistent winner just about every weekend since February 2020. I’ll win anything from $50-1500 depending on the offers. While online gambling would be problem for an addicted gambler, no matter where you live in NJ you’re not that far from a casino. In North Jersey you’ve got Resorts World near JFK or Empire city. In the west suburbs you’ve got WindCreek, formerly Sands, in South Jersey you’ve got AC and the Philly casinos. Hell an addicted gambler can just go to the corner store and get a scratch ticket. If anyone feels they shouldn’t have online gambling due to addicted gamblers, we’ll perhaps they should also support eliminating bricks and mortar casinos. In other words the minority that are addicted shouldn’t mess it up for the majority that gamble responsibly.

As I previously mentioned, I play online in NJ. The difference is I only play when they offer bonuses, which is usually on weekends. Once I meet the gambling requirements for the bonus, I cash out. Today’s example, Caesars had a promo deposit $500 get 35% in free play. The catch is you have to roll it over 5x or more, depending on the casino and promo. This one was 5x. So I got $175 in free play that I had to run through 5x, which is $875. Once I ran it through I cashed out. I finished up $50 plus the $175 in free play for a $225 profit. I don’t find it as entertaining as real casino, but it’s hard to not play when they offer these bonuses. One casino has a totally risk free bet for new players. Deposit $250, get $250, you only have to play the bonus $250 through 1x. You can’t lose. I won’t say the name, as I don’t want to appear that I’m promoting online gambling here, but Google it if you live in PA or NJ and have any interest.

I know that I'm most likely Odd Girl Out on this, but there are two rather small things that strike me as being irresponsible WRT gaming, both having the basis of spending what should not be spent on gaming.

First is playing with (significant amounts of) real money on line, period.

Second is reaching in for $20 after $20 after $20 after $20 when having a sucky session at a machine. That can't be enjoyable! At least move on to something else.

    Easier said than done.

Psychologically it has to come….fighting my inner self. $100 after $100…

This is where I probably break ranks with most of the folks here. To me, spending hundreds on (mostly) losing gambling sessions is just not fun for me. That's real money!

I look at the $20 after $20 after $20 folks and can't help wonder if they are of the means where they can continue to play at that level without negatively affecting their or their family's well being.

That’s bet size is the irrelevant part when it comes to a gambling addiction. This is the part most people fail to understand.

Somebody can be addicted playing slots at $20 after $20 and say they aren’t addicted. Increase it to $100 after $100 and it hurts them financially.

Being aware and realistic (with oneself) is key.

I know that going to Vegas isn’t going to hurt me. I don’t feel comfortable crossing the border with a huge sum. I don’t give myself access. That’s how I deal with it.

So true. I have over $200,000 in available credit card debt. Always wondered if all my other assets were gone.... and I just maxed out the credit cards on my way out.... just lazy thoughts...

CLARIFICATION: I have over $200k of credit AVAILABLE. Should not have used the word DEBT. We pay ZERO interest.

I'm sure that (most of) the credit card companies watch for such things, as in high credit limits to aging folks with limited net worth.

Back years ago I did carry quite a bit of credit card debt, and back in the days when you could deduct consumer interest that took some of the bite out of it. I eventually realized that it was costing me far more to pay the cc interest than I was making on similar amounts in savings and investments, so I paid most everything off and cancelled all but one personal cc, which has a modest 5 figure limit. I do have a company cc, but I have to account for (and sometimes defend) what's charged on it.

Back to the subject, I consider gambling on credit, whether it's a cc cash advance or more like a marker thing, to be irresponsible, at least for people of my financial standing. I really enjoy the casual gaming thing, playing with what's otherwise "mad money", but I'm very sure I would draw the line if I had to decide between a night out at the casino and paying pending bills.

I think it's more an issue of not playing with money you can't afford to lose. I have markers, but that was all tied to my dedicated Vegas account. Whenever I put cash on the table, I fully expect it to be gone. If any of it comes back, that's just a bonus. I pretty much never keep track of wins or losses. I completely agree, I just play to have fun.

Gambling or otherwise, I go by an axium I heard long ago. Once something controls you more than you do it, you're addicted to it.

I agree. Lots of clinical answers, but right there is how I look at things in my own life.
