it's September of 2002. I'm at a casino on Fremont Street. I'm at the last or 2nd to the last table at the end of the pit playing 2-deck pitch with decent rules. I'm drinking a large plastic cup of draft beer, like 32 oz. I am getting up to walk behind me around the corner to get it refilled at a counter; Miller high life I think. The bathroom is nearby against the wall. Which casino am I at?

Could I be-- dare I say this-- THE WESTERN?

I didn't start going to Vegas until 2004, but I remember being there, and them serving large 32 oz. cups of draft beer, from the bar right near the pit.

It's been closed for a few years, but your description matches.

I second the Western. I remember around that time when Gold Spike was an actual casino that they had a service counter but we were buying canned beer there. And huge plastic cups of beer would have gone well with their theme of “If you didn’t come here to die it might just happen anyway!”

I remember the 2$ knife they sold in a snack type. machine …. to cut the smoke. they said.
The sign is still viewable from EAT on a clear morning.
Their closing was one cog  in the mechanism that caused minimums to rise………..and now look at us.

I would think that a 32 ounce plastic cup wouldn't be that easy to drink out of....was it tall & thin so you could get it up to your mouth with only one hand?

Ha! Forgot all about the cinderblock atrocity called The Western!

I miss the yard drinks that were everywhere downtown. Or the 32oz plastic footballs filled with beer. Those were fun to toss around on Fremont around 1am.

The good ole days. I remember the Vegas visits in my 20's 2000-2005 , where it wasn't complete without a trip to the Beach nightclub (easiest pick-up joint in the valley), Western for an hour or two for cheap drinks and cheap gaming ( don't knock if it you haven't tried it), and the Fremont Street Experience, where there was always a lively crowd outside and at some of those casinos that are no longer with us (I'm looking at you Fitz, Lady Luck, the 'real' Gold Spike), the coffee shop at Golden Gate, and an evening listening to the Sunspots at the Omaha lounge at the Plaza. Not that long ago, but I get a little nostalgic now when walking through all the new stuff downtown

It might have been a 24 oz cup. I was chugging. It feels like I was at GG but resembled the area around 4Q players club. I cabbed from harrahs. Where would a cab drop me off if I just asked for Fremont Street?

Another memory from the trip was playing pitch in the champagne pit at Imperial Palace. Place was packed and drinks were fast. Bathroom attendant had a leather bag with everything, even a shaving kit. The pit boss was paranoid and told the dealer "guy at 3rd base is counting cards". Then proceeded to take cards out of discard to look at them. The most I bet on a hand all night was $15.

Stayed up all night until morning walking around the strip. Walked into a place that had single deck 6:5 just inside of the door; Flamingo? There was a subway in the back. Cage was right next to the pit by the door to the sidewalk. I was up $60 when they brought out a slick looking dealer. Shiny rings and wrapped his hands around the deck. Lost trust so I left after losing a couple.

Heh. If it really was the Western, the OP should've said, "The bathroom is nearby against the wall—but I'd rather pee in my pants than risk my life going in there."

Could that counter be at the end of the cafeteria-style sandwich line? The bathrooms at Golden Gate used to be on the west wall and you could probably tilt your chair back from the table and fall through the men’s room door. I can’t think of any reason a cabbie would answer a request for Fremont Street by dropping you at The Western, unless he was getting a kickback or just didn’t like you. At that time cabbies wouldn’t answer pick up requests from El Cortez because of the number of people who wanted to ride to Fremont Street and were afraid to walk the three blocks in between.

Sounds like the Las Vegas Club due to the decent blackjack rules.

Did the bathroom in the hotel room make you think that you might be in a prison cell (cinderblock walls, shampoo dispenser bolted to the wall, etc.)? Then I'd second Las Vegas Club. I stayed there a couple decades ago, when they were the only place that'd let me do a Saturday night arrival. I won't say I disliked it, because I love all things Vegas, but I also do not miss the place.
