Funny thing about that song is that it was actually Flagstaff and the Flatbed Ford was a Toyota pickup!

I have a state football record in Missouri. And it's not a good one.

When I was in high school I played QB for the team and on Wednesday I broke the middle finger on my throwing hand. Our backup QB was not an option so we had no back up unless we let the freshman starter play and after he took three snaps in practice on Thursday the coach turned to me said I needed to find a way to play Friday night. We rigged up a stupid contraption made of cut up pads and duct tape and I was able to, at least, take the snap in the game. After that, not so good. 8 interceptions later I got pulled from the game. As far as I know, it is still the state record 30 years later. All these years later no one knows why we kept throwing the ball instead of just running it 90% of the time.

There's something like 10,000 people who go there every year, so not sure if that counts as "few" :) It was a lot of fun: I didn't take the "medieval recreation" part all too seriously: enough to be respectful of those who did, and some of it was interesting, but that wasn't my man driver. I really saw it as an alternate sport, and as a sport, it was really a lot of fun for someone who never really took to the traditional team sports.

My Dad worked for the Beacon Journal in those days. He always let me carry his bag that had lens and camera accessories. In those days, it was a lotta stuff. Got me a press-pass into Browns and Indian games, as well as the Soap Box Derby and other “cool” NE Ohio stuff.

He was perfectly capable of carrying the bag by himself, but always made the case he needed help!

I had 3 concussions in high school, probably, but this was in the late 80s so they were never really diagnosed and I went back in to all three games.

If we are adding personal accomplishment to this list (rather than my first example, which was right place right time), as a high school sophomore debater I qualified for both the National Debate Tournament and the Tournament of Champions that year. No other sophomore in the country qualified for both that year (although admittedly, many juniors and seniors did). So I guess that qualifies as something few people did

I can relate to this. I stop at Burger King every time I pass through LAS, including the trip where I ate at both Picasso and Joel Robuchon. And I ate at Burger King in Paris (I seek them out in every country I visit, including Beijing, Buenos Aires, London).

Ooh, high school. Junior year I made the All-State contingency, where I played upright bass... in the wind ensemble. Concert band compositions often came with an upright bass part, and I was literally the only one in the ensemble. I also played bass in the concert band (i.e., the big one), and got a trip to Hershey Park out of it. Also did a trip to New Orleans with the jazz band where I got to do a masterclass with Ellis Marsalis, and was the only high-schooler in the local university orchestra.

Of course, I have since completely forgotten how to play.

We were in Moscow in the early 70s when there were only a few Americans visiting. The only other Americans there at the time were reps from Coca C ola drumming up business. We were in Red Square when we were stopped several times by groups of young people who said they knew we must be Americans by our clothes. They were desperate for information and news about America. Each time, the conversation ended abruptly. Finally, I quickly spun around when this happened again and sure enough, there were two ( KGB?) guys gesturing for the kids to move on. I told DH that I am sure they will be following us even more carefully than they were doing already. An amazing experience.
